This paper outlines a systematic methodology for effecting Total Quality Management in higher education decision making with particular attention to the faculty selection process. Following a brief analysis of the application of TQM to higher education in general and consideration of the contextual and power relations issues associated with implementation of TQM, a model for integrating Total Quality Management principles into the faculty recruitment, identification, and selection process is outlined. This model relates the role of vision, mission, planning and organizational design with quality concepts (understanding a system and systems theory, leadership, empowerment, client/constituet satisfaction, team building, and continuous process improvement). Drawing upon Marchese and Lawrence's (1987) work wherein they identified eight critical processes in the selection of faculty, one critical process—Defining the job is specifically analyzed using the continuous improvement methodology as an example of the specific application of TQM techniques to higher education decision making. The model and this example provide educational leaders/search committees with an enhanced framework within which they can effectively analyze and evaluate faculty selection processes, criteria for selection, and relevant contextual issues that will result in the identification and selection of the best qualified faculty available. 相似文献

ABSTRACTMentoring relationship quality has frequently been associated with improved effectiveness of mentoring interventions for youth. As youth mentoring research has largely been undertaken in community-based, one-to-one mentoring programs in the United States, there have been recent calls to investigate mentoring relationships in specific contexts. Accordingly, this research examines relationship quality within nine mentor-mentee dyads involved in a New Zealand school-based mentoring program that combines one-to-one and group mentoring. This research identifies key features of and perceived influences on mentoring relationship quality using qualitative interviews with program staff and mentor portfolios. The results indicate that high quality relationships were formed during the program, and were primarily facilitated by mentors who demonstrated attunement, critical self-reflection, self-efficacy, and a holistic view of their mentee. An attempt to find new ways to popularize science and encourage more women into it by demonstrating the scientific content of women's traditional work is described. The idea was to teach scientists textile knowledge and to teach those interested in textiles, science. Scientists could be given a course in textile dyeing and the textile group could illustrate a scientific problem in textiles. The plans to give a course in textile dyeing had to be postponed but the textile illustration of a scientific problem went well. Seventy students illustrated their thoughts on gene technology in six different works. Four of these were exhibited at an official commercial exhibition. One entitled ‘The Pyramid’ aroused especially strong feelings. The textile works showed that the new knowledge could be achieved through textiles. 相似文献

Kevin McCarthy sees a slight irony in the idea of inspecting the spiritual dimension of education. Nevertheless, he argues strongly that schools' response to this should be creative. The resulting policy must be a whole-school one that involves both horizontal and vertical curriculum development. In the second part of his paper he describes how, in his own school, a programme is being developed which goes beyond the mechanistic approach to science typically found in examination syllabi.
