Polishing treatments on ivory materials in the National Museum in Ravenna

Abstract

During the restoration of art works, data of great significance to art history frequently emerge. The purpose of our research is to throw light on the materials used in the past in the treatment and maintenance of works in ivory and bone. This has been achieved by conducting in-depth historical research into the specific literature and, thereafter, by examining with X-ray powder diffraction analysis and DTA and TG thermal analyses the accumulated deposits in the carvings and cavities of several artifacts belonging to the ivory collection housed in the National Museum in Ravenna.     

The learned journal: using the tools of the trade

Options for the production of camera-ready copy for journals are described. The advantages and problems of setting from author- or editor-supplied magnetic media are outlined, with an introduction to coding systems. Some implications of the use of in-house desktop publishing systems by publishers are discussed and suggestions for further reading given.     

Online tools for public participation

This paper describes an interactive Web-based survey tool that was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago to advance a community planning process. The team used a process taken from the work of Jack Nasar (1998) that involves surveying residents to create an “evaluative image” of the community that could guide future design and development. While Nasar’s original method used a phone survey, UIC researchers developed a Web site through which participants interacted with a map that was linked through a server to a GIS program. This project builds upon an earlier version of the survey by increasing the complexity and the coverage area of the interactive map (Al-Kodmany, 2000).     

Polishing the Crystal Ball: Using Historical Data to Project Serials Trends and Pricing

Presented by the authors of the annual Library Journal (LJ) serials pricing article, this program discussed the major serials pricing studies used by libraries. The strengths and weaknesses of methodologies utilized to create the LJ article as well as the Prices of U.S. and Foreign Published Materials Index compiled by the ALA ALCTS Library Materials Price Index Editorial Board were presented. Although the studies may have differing approaches, both clearly indicate that serial prices are increasing. Libraries need to be aware of what the impact of these price changes will be on their future budgets.     

On the logical tools of intelligent sociological data analysis

The logical tools for formalizing of qualitative sociological data analysis are considered. The capabilities of approaches employing JSM reasoning, a class of cognitive plausible reasoning, and the methods of Boolean algebra are considered and compared.     

Comparison of select reference management tools

Bibliographic management tools have been widely used by researchers to store, organize, and manage their references for research papers, theses, dissertations, journal articles, and other publications. There are a number of reference management tools available. In order for users to decide which tool is best for their needs, it is important to know each tool's strengths and weaknesses. This article compares four reference management tools, one of which is licensed by University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey libraries and the other three are open source and freely available. They were chosen based on their functionality, ease of use, availability to library users, and popularity. These four tools are EndNote/EndNote Web, Zotero, Connotea, and Mendeley Desktop/Mendeley Web. Each tool is analyzed in terms of the following features: accessing, collecting, organizing, collaborating, and citing/formatting. A comparison table is included to summarize the key features of these tools.

Knowledge acquisition in the small: building knowledge-acquisition tools from pieces

The knowledge-systems community is interested in easing the knowledge-system development process. One approach, the mechanisms approach, views knowledge systems as a set of tasks, each of which can be realized by a computation mechanism. To be effective, knowledge-acquisition (KA) tools must be automatically configured once a set of mechanisms has been selected. We present a method for automatically generating a model-based KA tool for a given set of mechanisms. The method advocates combining KA mechanisms, which acquire knowledge in the small, and a set of strategies that provide a global view of the KA activity. We show that these global strategies are necessary for the KA tool to efficiently interact with a domain expert.

The modeling of processes for creating electronic learning tools

This paper examines the modeling of processes for creating electronic learning tools. Different approaches to modeling are analyzed in detail. A conceptual model of learning tools was developed and a functional model of their creation and use is proposed.     

Open data visualizations and analytics as tools for policy-making

Government agencies collect large amounts of structured and unstructured data. Although these data can be used to improve services as well as policy processes, it is not always clear how to analyze the data and how to glean insights for policy making, especially when the data includes large volumes of unstructured text data. This article reports opinions found in “We the People” petition data using topic modeling and visual analytics. It provides an assessment of the usability of the visual analytics results for policy making based on interviews with data professionals and policy makers. We found that visual analytics have potentially positive impacts on policy making practices. Experts also articulated potential barriers regarding the adoption of visual analytics tools, and made suggestions. Potential barriers included insufficient resources in government agencies and difficulty integrating analytics with current work practices. The main suggestions involved providing training and interpretation guidelines along with the visual analytics tools. Major contributions of this study include: (1) suggesting viable visualization tools for analyzing textual data for policy making, and (2) suggesting how to lower barriers to adoption by increasing usability.
