Three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis of a soil-pile-bridge interaction

The soil-pile-bridge interaction of super-large pile groups is a very complex issue for the design of deep pile group foundations. In this paper, the load distribution on the pile top of a super large bridge foundation and its influential factors are analyzed comprehensively using a three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element method. The adopted model and its input parameters are firstly verified by comparing the numerical results with the measured data of static loading tests of a single pile. Numerical analysis is then performed to investigate the load distribution and the load-settlement characteristics of super-large pile groups, and the models are verified using centrifuge laboratory model testing data. The mechanism of the interaction between pile groups and soil under different conditions is explored.     

An Anaylsis of Two Marriages of Herzog from the Perspective of Erich Fromm’s Theory

Herzog is one of the most successful novels written by the Jewish Nobel Prize winner Saul Bellow. Herzog, the protagonist of the novel, has experienced a spiritual and emotional collapse, triggered by the breakup of his second marriage and his contemplation of the wasteland of modern life. In the novel, he has divorced twice respectively because he is bored and boring. The characteristics of the two ex-wives are in sharp contrast. Deep analysis of the two women and their marital relationships with Erich Fromm’s theory can facilitate our understanding of the novel, the writer as well as the modern world.     

The Tragedy of Unbalanced Personality——The Common Personality Psychological Reasons of the Destruction of Emily and Usher

A Rose for Emily is the masterpiece of William Faulkner, who is regarded as the founder of Southern literature. The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the most popular short stories written by the great American writer Edgar Allan Poe. They have common ends that the main characters of the two novels—Emily and Usher are all destruction of their unbalanced personality.This thesis will set a new point from a branch view of psychology—personality psychology to analyze the two characters Emily and Usher, how they change from pathological personality to abnormal personality, and finally destruct from flesh to soul. The deep meaning is to announce the human inner world will distract by the outside world.     

Modular approach for ethics

It is hard to define a single set of ethics that will cover an entire computer users community. In this paper, the issue is addressed in reference to code of ethics implemented by various professionals, institutes and organizations. The paper presents a higher level model using hierarchical approach. The code developed using this approach could be adopted easily by the entire community of computer users working in different environments. The hierarchical approach allows refinement and customization of code at lower levels to address the needs of diverse sub groups of users. It also provides comfort of flexibility as well as the potential for evolution. The work reported here is in continuation of the research reported in an earlier paper （Wyne,2009）.     

A new coding scheme in coded ultrasound using staggering repetition interval

The increase of frame rate, though with the potential in a coded ultrasound system, is generally concomitant with the simultaneous transmission of a number of apertures, and in consequence leads to increased cross-talks between different apertures. In view of this, a new coding scheme using staggering repetition interval was proposed. The transmitting signals were constructed by repeating the two （or more） modulated codes using staggering repetition interval, and then allocated to and transmitted simultaneously among different apertures. The decoding process was based on the subsection-matched filter under the assistance of different matched filters for different apertures. At last the outputs of subsection-matched filtering were added together. Staggering changed the positions of cross-correlation （CC） peaks from coinciding, which resulted in an effective reduction of CC. Our theoretical analysis and simulations showed that, the coding scheme can be used to reduce cross-talk, and a good cross-talk reduction will be achieved if the staggering delay is kept in an appropriate range.

A new algorithm is presented by using the ant colony algorithm based on genetic method (ACG) to solve the continuous optimization problem.Each component has a seed set.The seed in the set has the value of component,trail information and fitness.The ant chooses a seed from the seed set with the possibility determined by trail information and fitness of the seed.The genetic method is used to form new solutions from the solutions got by the ants.Best solutions are selected to update the seeds in the sets and trail information of the seeds.In updating the trail information,a diffusion function is used to achieve the diffuseness of trail information.The new algorithm is tested with 8 different benchmark functions.

A Simple Analysis of Elizabeth and Darcy’s Marriage in Pride and Prejudice

Marriage is the main idea of Jane Austen’s novels. The novel reflects the ideal marriage views by describing several different marriages. It reveals a real marriage should be based on love, actual need, morality and equality. It creates a contrast between a successful marriage and an unsuccessful one. Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is considered as a successful one. In fact it embodies the author’s own concept of marriage, it is a fault to get married for only money and social status, but it is also foolish without thinking of these factors.     

Numerical Modeling of Response and Damage of Masonry Walls to Blast Loading

To model the damage process of masonry walls under blast loading, a dynamic continuum damage material model is constructed for brick and mortar separately. The degradation of both the stiffness and strength are governed by a damage variable. By using the proposed material model, damage and fragmentation of a typical masonry wall under blast loading at different scaled distances is calculated. The hazard level of the masonry wall to blast loading is evaluated by analyzing the numerical results.     

Integrative Interpretation of Textual Coherence and Teaching of College English Intensive Reading

The text-based and reader-based are two contrasting groups of approaches existed in the field of textual coherence study.On the basis of the integration of the two kinds of approaches,an integrative interpretation of the nature of coherence is proposed,that is,coherence is both a text-related and reader-related phenomenon.In order to construct coherent interpretation of text meaning more efficiently,readers should not only be able to identify and use text-immanent coherence cues,but also be capable of drawing coherence-related information by perceiving the contextual features and by engaging actively in activating their background knowledge and in using their cognitive skills.Coherence construction based on the integrative interpretation is the key to success in reading comprehension,so it can generate important pedagogical implications in the college English intensive reading classroom.     

On the stochastic dynamics of molecular conformation

An important functioning mechanism of biological macromolecules is the transition between different conformed states due to thermal fluctuation. In the present paper,a biological macromolecule is modeled as two strands with side chains facing each other,and its stochastic dynamics including the statistics of stationary motion and the statistics of conformational transition is studied by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi Hamiltonian systems. The theoretical results are confirmed with the results from Monte Carlo simulation.     

Statistical Model-Based Face Pose Estimation

A robust face pose estimation approach is proposed by using face shape statistical model approach and pose parameters are represented by trigonometric functions. The face shape statistical model is firstly built by analyzing the face shapes from different people under varying poses. The shape alignment is vital in the process of building the statistical model. Then, six trigonometric functions are employed to represent the face pose parameters. Lastly, the mapping function is constructed between face image and face pose by linearly relating different parameters. The proposed approach is able to estimate different face poses using a few face training samples. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate its efficiency and accuracy.     

Calcium Phosphate Coating on Al2O3 Ceramics by a Biomimetic Method Using Electric Pulse Technique

The preparation of calcium phosphate (CP) coating on alumina ceramics using electric pulse stimulating method has been investigated. The cup-shaped alumina ceramics were soaked in a simulated body fluid ( SBF), and a square pulse potential with frequency of 1 Hz and voltage of 110 V was applied between the inner and outer surfaces of the alumina cup. Surface morphology of CP coatings during different deposition periods was observed by a Philips XL-30 scanning electron microscope (SEM). Compositional analysis was examined by EDAX. The mechanism of nucleation and growth of CP coating was discussed. SEM result indicates that the coating comprises of a large number of tiny needle-like grains and has a porous microstructure. There is a strong bond between the deposited layer and Al2O3 substrate, which may be due to the gentle growth of the biomimetic method. The EDAX analysis indicates that main composition of the coating is calcium and phosphor. The formation of CP coating may be contributed to the stimulation of electric pulse and the high ions concentration which is 1.5 times of the concentration of SBF solution ( 1.5SBF solution). Such surface functionalization method by electric pulse potential can be used to prepare CP coating on various electric-insulating bioinert materials for improving their bioactive character.     

A novel current-sharing scheme based on magamp

The magamp （magnetic amplifier） is widely used in power supplies due to its low cost, simplicity and other advantages. This paper discusses a novel application of the magamp in switching power supplies, where the magamp is used to regulate pulse width modulation （PWM） instead of power signal in the main circuit. This method extends the application of the magamp in power supplies, and makes it possible to further regulate control signal when PWMs have been generated. Based on this applica- tion, a new current-sharing （CS） scheme using the magamp is proposed, which uses a modified inner loop CS structure. In this scheme PWMs are generated by one main controller, and CS is achieved by regulating PWMs using a magamp in each module. Compared with traditional application of the magamp, the new CS scheme can be used in most topologies and only requires magamps of low power capacity. Then a test circuit of parallel power supply is developed, in which CS is achieved by a PWM regulator with the magamp. The proposed scheme is also used to upgrade an electroplate power to make it capable of paralleling supplies. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme has good CS performance.

Thought patterns and language are closely related,they are two aspect of the culture.Translation,a tool of intercultural communication,connects the different thought patterns.In this paper,a specific analysis of the limitation in translation caused by the difference is illustrated.Thus,translation is influenced deeply by the different thought patterns.The only way to get the reappearance to the culture in translation is to find out the principles of translation from the different thought patterns.     

A Tentative Refutation on the Language Arbitrariness From the Perspective of the Six Categories of Chinese Characters

It has long been viewed that Saussure’s principle of arbitrariness is a fundamental theory in modern linguistics.Up to now,some linguists and scholars have raised their doubts to Saussure’s arbitrariness theory from different aspects.In this thesis,the author aims at using " 六书 "(The six categories of Chinese characters) to show that the creation of Chinese characters has some reasons and it was not 100% arbitrary between the forms of linguistic signs and their meaning.
