Career Ladder Policy For Teachers: The Case Of Ghana

In 1984 the Ministry of Education in Ghana introduced a career ladder policy for teachers. While reformers believe that this has improved the condition of the teaching profession, the net gains of the policy remain deceptive. There has even been a reduction in some of the benefits that teachers used to enjoy in the single salary scheme in the past. After critically assessing the major aspects of the policy, along with the voices of Ghanaian teachers, this study argues that the career ladder policy for teachers in Ghana is another prototypical case of a failed experiment in terms of both improving the lives of teachers and maintaining their professional rights.

Constructivism: Theory For Practice? The Case Of Mathematics

In recent years the theory known as constructivism has attracted considerable attention from researchers and document writers in particular. Implementation of constructivist principles inside the classroom is still problematic, however. Different reasons for this are explored in the paper. An overview of previously ‐ and in some cases still ‐ popular theories of learning and teaching precedes a detailed discussion of constructivism: its sources, definitions, advocates, and critics. A number of classroom experiments designed and executed within a constructivist paradigm are reported in considerable detail. The roles of both learner and teacher are described. Throughout, the discussion is confined to mathematics, mathematics education, and the mathematics classroom. However, the main arguments presented are applicable as well to other disciplines.

The Principle Of Likelihood As A Basis For Tests Of Significance

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that a feeling of being in control will make potentially stressful environmental events less so. Subjects were practicing teachers about whom little was known regarding the relationship between locus of control and stress. They responded to the Teacher Locus of Control Scale and the Teacher Occupational Stress Factor Questionnaire. Multivariate and bivariate analyses of their responses showed that locus of control was related to teacher stress. As hypothesized, teachers who felt that they were in control reported less stress in their world of work than did those who did not feel influential in their educational environment. Neither sex nor age moderated this relationship.
