A World of Colors——2005 Exhibition of Oil Paintings by China＇s New Young Artists

In China, artists born in the 1970s can always be identified by the variety and individuality of their works, Unlike the earlier generations who shared simllar strong social and political beliefs,the younger generation of artists doesn‘t really form schools with distinctive common features, such as the “scar arts” in the late 1970s, the “neoclassic” in the 1980s and the “new generation” as well as the “political pop arts” in the 1990s.     

The Bridge of Arts Brings China and Thailand Closer

From February 4 to 17, 2005, soon after the earthquake in Southeast Asia, the Chinese Arts Delegation consisting of 145 performers and led by vice director-general of Fujian Cultural Department Mr. Fang Jialin, visited Thailand to perform at Chinese Spring Festival Week for mobilizing fund for earthquake victims. This visit marked the opening of Chinese Cultural Year in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-Thailand diplomatic relations.     

Chieftain＇s Manor of Yi Ethnic Group

Datun chieftain‘s manor of yi ethnic group,located in Datun in the west of Guizhou prcvince,was built by the descendant of the chieftain named Yu Xiangy,It was later expanded by Yu‘s adopted son Yu Dafu ,thus becoming the current 3,000-square-meter complex with 50 meters in width and 60 meters in length.

Refined and Elegant： Masterpieces of Suzhou-style Embroidery

＂Birds Perching at Winter Sweet＂ is an exquisite embroidery work, The work features a vigorous and straight trunk of the winter sweet, shone by plum blossoms and with a pair of birds perching at the branches. The embroidered work was based on one of the ink paintings by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty [960-1127] which is now collected in the Palace Museum in Taipei. The emperor is an accomplished artist skilled in painting and calligraphy.

Whenever I passed by the Forbidden City, would be impressed by its dazzling and spectacular large roofs covered by glazed tiles. In past months when I shot photos of traditional craftsmanship of Beijing, I discovered interest in colored glaze, a time-honored skill included in the National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage List.     

Cui Junmiao： Plucking Melodies of Youth

Cui was enrolled in Tianjin Theatre Academy in 1980 to study Zhongruan and Liuqin under the mentorship of master Zou Ke, She was also trained in several other string and percussion instruments such as Jinghu （Beijing Opera two-string violin）, Yueqin （moon guitar） and Sanxian （long-necked three-string lute）. She was admiMed by Central Conservatory of Music in 1989 and trained by a number of masters including Prof. Kuang Yuzhong, Zhang Dasen, Liu Xing and Zhang Xinhua. As the conservatory＇s first graduate in Liuqin, Cui was employed by China Radio Ethnic Music Ensemble in 1993.

Ceramic Artist Gao Feng：In Pursuit of Glory of Life

In the beginning of his career, Gao Feng served as an apprentice in a ceramic workshop, doing errands for his masters. With several months of practicing and training, he acquainted himself with every process of ceramic making and developed interest in this profession dealing with clay and fire, One year later, he was transferred to the ceramic studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. At that time, except Jingdezhen and a few other ceramic sites in frontier areas, the technique of ceramic throwing had been generally replaced by machine molding and infilling.     

One Hundred Years of Chinese Watercolor Painting

After three years of preparation, the exhibition ＂One Hundred Years of Watercolor Painting＂, jointly-sponsored by the Arts Department of Chinese Cultural Ministry, Chinese Artists＇ Association and the National Art Museum of China, was held from October 14 to 27, 2006. This article was written in celebration of this landmark event by Huang Tieshan, Chairman of the Watercolor Painting Committee of Chinese Artists＇ Association.     

Long Song： bound of Nature in the Mongolian Grasslands

On November 25, 2005,“long song” was proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the ＂Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity＂. ＂Long song＂, or called ＂urtiin duu＂ in the Mongolian language, is one of the most distinct and honored form of music in Mongolian culture. It is chiefly performed in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, the State of Mongolia as well as the Russian Republic of Buryat.     

Historic County of Wu’an

County has played an important role in the history of China since it was first established as a basic administrative unit in 00the Qin Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago. Historic counties have not only performed administrative and economic functions but also carried and preserved basic information about culture and traditions of China. Not long ago, the Photographic Exhibition on the Cultural Heritage of Historic Counties of China, organized by China Cultural Relics Protection Foundation in partnership with the Palace Museum and China Institute of Toponymy, was held at the Forbidden City, displaying photographs on the cultures and traditions of the first 16 Historic Counties of China, with an objective to enhance the public’s awareness of the conservation of cultural heritage in these historic counties.Our magazine will cover each of these chosen historic counties in each issue.     

Convergence of Civilizations： World Heritage Sites in Croatia Exhibited in Beijing
