Deakin University has been committed to off-campus education since its establishment in 1977. Here, the implications of this commitment for the University Library are set out, library activities in relation to new courses for off-campus students are discussed, and the relevant acquisitions procedure is explained. Specific areas such as the delivery/return system, decisions on multiple copies, availability of journal articles, and Study Center library provision are considered. Six problem areas in provision to off-campus students are examined. Finally, the future role of the library in relation to the off-campus mode of instruction is considered, particularly in light of technological change and of attitudes to distance education.  相似文献

The allocations formula at Ohio University has guided the allocation of increased acquisitions funding to academic disciplines since 1979. It is derived from a 50-50 division between supply (the cost of materials within a particular academic area) and demand (circulation, interlibrary loan borrowing, student enrollments, and faculty). The use and rationale for a formula are generally described, accompanied by a history of the development and revision of such a formula at one institution. Highlighting intra-institutional politics, the formula has channeled faculty dissatisfactions away from complaints about the funding level for one discipline vis-à-vis another to a concern for increasing the overall acquisitions budget.  相似文献

The proccss, results and status of academic strategic planning at Iowa State University are described. The president initiated strategic planning in 1987 as the mechanism by which to establish major future emphases and directions for the university within the context of its significantly changing external environment. University- wide goals, objectives and strategies were developed for the teaching, rescarch and outreach functions of the institution. Each academic program was reviewed and formal recommendations (some of them controversial) were made for program enhancement, reorganization and institutional consolidation. Changes are now being implemented, including the adoption of ongoing strategic planning and program review.  相似文献

This article details the implementation of an electronic request service that allows users to register item requests directly from the OPAC without re-typing the bibliographic information and at no cost. This project supports the overall efforts of the university by furthering the Western Michigan University strategic plan to implement a user-friendly document delivery service. This article describes this innovative and easy way to access a reservation list to retrieve library items by implementing customized web-based management using MySQL and Voyager Oracle? backend. The advantage of a web-based management system is its ease of use and highly customizable features. Some statistics on the number of requests from 2008–2011 are also included.  相似文献

The dominant theme of this article is the interaction between collection problems as experienced by Danish libraries and the teaching the Danish Library School offers as at least a partial solution to these problems. First, a brief outline of acquisitions and collection development problems in Danish libraries is presented, with emphasis on topics like collection growth, budgetary reductions, changing user patterns, and needs for systematic evaluation and control. A characterization of the librarians' debates on acquisitions problems is also provided because it illustrates professional attitudes and different obstacles. The way in which the Library School copes with these problems is described including the integration of the subject in the curriculum and how it is treated in continuing education courses. A major focus is the content and substance of teaching, particularly the topics emphasized and the theoretical frames of reference used. The article evaluates the library School's success in meeting the needs of libraries and librarians.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In 2000, Eastern Washington University became part of the Cascade Consortium and participated in consortial borrowing through the Cascade Union Catalog. In 2003, the Orbis and Cascade consortia merged into the Orbis Cascade Alliance, which manages the Summit Union Catalog. In fall 2004, the Pickup Anywhere option of Innovative Interfaces' INN-Reach module was implemented, allowing patrons to pick up consortial materials at many of the member libraries, not just their own institution's library. Since 2000, Cascade or Summit consortial borrowing has increased while other interlibrary loans of borrowed returnables has decreased. It is too early to tell if Pickup Anywhere will have an effect on Eastern Washington University's Interlibrary Loan department. The problems library staff reported regarding Pickup Anywhere are also examined.  相似文献

A survey of selected library materials jobbers, cataloging agents, and library consortia shows that communication standards, vendor and library automation, and new partnerships among vendors and libraries are leading to greater opportunities for outsourcing acquisitions, cataloging, and collection development. Currently libraries can depend on vendors for preorder searching, verification, and claiming functions as well as copy and original cataloging. Libraries can receive shelf-ready materials from jobbers or cataloging agents; those that collect mainstream materials have the most options; others must shop among vendors. Collection development is the function least changed by automation, but materials jobbers are orienting more electronic services towards this area. Librarians should become full partners in the development of contract services. To do this, librarians must understand the evolving roles of the traditional partners and the costs and risks involved.  相似文献

Virtual and Augmented Realities are advancing technologies that are becoming more popular in gaming and programming communities. However, virtual reality has been in development for decades. As libraries are often at the forefront of offering new and advancing technologies to their communities, virtual and augmented reality programs have become new additions to library services. While gaming is the prominent use of these technologies, virtual and augmented reality affords many educational opportunities. Summary

The Colorado State University Libraries' instructional outreach services have undergone significant changes since the reorganization of Reference Services in January of 1998. The new organizational structure created a separate group for instruction, outreach and staff training, which includes the extended university programs position (distance learning), and a new position, the undergraduate instruction librarian. This new group gives the Libraries an avenue in which to provide focused instruction to the Colorado State University community and limited outreach to campus affiliates and the Fort Collins community. This article discusses outreach activities before and after the reorganization including services to specific populations such as African Americans, Hispanics, distance learning populations and extension services, undergraduates, and disabled students.  相似文献

At 15, the Charleston Acquisitions Conference continues to be a success. It began as a regional conference with 32 participants and speakers and is now an international meeting with over 400 participants from the United States and other countries. The author first attempts to define an objective methodology for evaluating the success of professional meetings. Next he describes the conference and its evolution over time concentrating on the attendees, speakers, programs, publications, and he compares it to other acquisitions meetings. Finally, using the methodology developed earlier, the author discusses why Charleston is a successful conference.  相似文献

DOBIS/LIBIS is an integrated online library automation system developed jointly by the University of Dortmund in West Germany and the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. Its acquisitions subsystem has been in operation at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, since May 1986. This paper provides an overview of the system design and functions available for acquisitions control, including strengths and weaknesses.  相似文献
