苏轼20岁时,与弟弟苏辙离开四川到北宋京城参加科举考试,主考官是欧阳修。苏轼写厂一篇文章,题目叫《刑赏忠厚之至论》。欧阳修阅卷后,觉得文章写得很好。当时考官阅卷和今天高考阅卷一样,考官不知道考生的名字,以免偏心或走后门。欧阳修觉得写这篇文章的考生应该是第一名。但是,他多了一个“避嫌”的心眼。欧阳修虽不知考生的名字,但他怀疑这名考生是自己的门生曾巩。如将曾巩评为第一名．日后难免有人说闲话。因此,欧阳修将写《刑赏忠厚之至论》的考生立为第二名。     

欧阳修荐才一例

欧阳修(公元1007年—1072年),字永叔,号醉翁,是北宋著名的文学家、政治家。他注重摆用人才,提拔后进,凡有才能的人,他都能大力扶植、荐举。王安石、苏洵、苏轼、苏辙、曾巩等,都是在欧阳修的提携培养下成长起来的文学家、政治家。有次,欧阳修向皇帝推荐吕公著、司马光、王安石三人可以为宰相。吕公著是原宰相吕夷
