Gender,Science, and Technology:

The present bibliography grew out of a need to provide a basic working list for participants in a conference held at the University of California, Davis in April of 1988. Originally consisting of publications of conference participants, it grew from a specialized working document into a more comprehensive monograph bibliography, at first with a simple snowball method; and subsequently, with the aid of two major bibliographic utilities: the University of California's system-wide online catalog (Melvyl), and RLIN (the cataloging database of the Research Libraries Group).     

Recognizing,Understanding, and Responding:

Students from different cultures are a significant and growing patron group in American academic libraries. Not only do their diverse educational backgrounds present barriers to library use, but cultural characteristics can affect communication and understanding with the librarians trying to assist them. A model which can be used to develop or expand library service for international students and which is adaptable to any size institution is presented. The model, which incorporates a review of the literature and survey results from Ohio institutions, includes five programs: (1) promotional, (2) instructional, (3) staff development, (4) written, and (5) purchase.     

Automation,Barriers, and Communication:

Implementation of an integrated library system can cause re-examination of long-standing barriers between technical services and public services. The stakes are high and both sides experience stress while learning the new system and interpreting it to patrons. The University of Oregon Library, through both failures and successes, is learning how to use automation to change and improve technical services-public services communication. The article concludes with suggestions on what both sides can do to break down traditional barriers.     

Binge-Watching: A Suspenseful,Emotional, Habit

Binge-watching, simultaneously treated as both guilty pleasure and legitimate health concern in popular press and academic discussions, is a pervasive media behavior. Yet distinguishing it from other ways of television viewing remains elusive in communication research. The present study employs empirically supported variables to determine if different outcome expectancies are relevant to the frequency of binge-watching as contrasted with appointment viewing of television through the lens of the model of media attendance. Survey results (N = 797) of a college student and representative adult sample reveal that binge-watching is motivated in large part by the behavior already being an entrenched habit among viewers, while suspense and anticipation associated with content and motivation to use viewing to regulate one’s emotions are also significant antecedents. Conversely, more frequent appointment viewing of television viewing was driven by viewing efficacy and older age.     

ERIC: Mission,structure, and resources

This paper provides an overview of the mission, structure, and resource base of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC). An extensive review of literature coupled with the conduct of a key informants survey is used to produce an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of these aspects of ERIC. It is followed by recommendations for possible avenues for change and approaches to further investigation.

Accountant Certification,Licensing, and Accreditation:

Accountants might seek a combination of certification, licensing, or accreditation as part of professional development. A complete accounting subject collection in a library will include resources which accountants can use in pursuing these goals. Accounting association give the examinations which accountants take for certification, licensing, and accreditation. State boards of accountancy regulate licensed accountants. This article presents a strategy librarians can use to build collections which support accountants preparing for examinations. The strategy centers on asking boards of accountancy for requirements, requesting primary accounting associations provide catalogs and bibliographies, and selecting resources offered in associations' principal journals.     

SACO: Past,Present, and Future

Abstract

This article discusses the history and development of the SACO (Subject Authority Cooperative) Program of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). The current proposal process is examined. The University of California, Davis Library is presented as a participating institution, with some forward-looking utilization of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).     

Citators: Past,Present, and Future

ABSTRACT

Citators are one of the oldest and most important tools in the legal researcher's arsenal. They serve both as precautionary measures against bad law, and as a means of doing primary legal research. The evolution of citators plays an important roll in the development of both the legal publishing industry and legal research itself. This article examines many aspects of the legal citator—its history, development, uses, and possible future.     

Communication processes: Role,place, content

The concepts “information,” “communication,” “act of communication,” “communication process,” and “communication model” are considered, as well as their interrelations, properties and patterns. Classical communication models are discussed, as well as modern models describing relevant modern social phenomena and processes. A conclusion is drawn about the influence of communication process on individuals and society. The role of language in the human mode of life and expression of ideas is emphasized.     

Discovering Music: Small-Scale,Web-Scale,Facets, and Beyond

In this presentation, two music librarians addressed the issues related to the discovery of library music resources. Rebecca Belford talked about the Music Library Association’s “Music Discovery Requirements” (MLA MDR) document, and how it applies to some contexts. Tracey Snyder then described the incorporation of MLA MDR into the development of a specific discovery interface. The presenters identified some of the challenges characteristic of music resources and ways in which those challenges may be met, reasoning that a tool capable of handling music will be capable of handling most things in a general collection.     

Beyond authorship: attribution,contribution, collaboration,and credit

• As the number of authors on scientific publications increases, ordered lists of author names are proving inadequate for the purposes of attribution and credit.
• A multi‐stakeholder group has produced a contributor role taxonomy for use in scientific publications.
• Identifying specific contributions to published research will lead to appropriate credit, fewer author disputes, and fewer disincentives to collaboration and the sharing of data and code.
