《马氏通》虚字学说颇有多创意，在借鉴欧洲与继承传统方面都有所突破，把汉语虚词研究推向一个新的高度。马氏发现了汉语特有的助字，发现了汉语的“介字”和西语的不同；他继承并发展了传统训诂学虚字研究的成果，提出了虚字和实字明确的定义和分类标准，与传统的虚字作比较，有很大的开拓和进展，取得了长足的进步。     

《马氏文通》“滋静”字评述

《马氏通》(以F简称《通》)出版于1898年，它是我国最早的，也是最系统的一部语法作，它的出版突破了古法研究只围绕字的音、形、义进行的旧框框，结束丁汉语“有规律隐寓其中，特无有为之比拟而揭示之”的局面(《通·后序》)；它以“字类”、“句读”为重点，以“正名”为总纲，

转词是《马氏文通》中的重要概念。文章梳理了《马氏文通》中提到的“动字后的无介转词”,并进行分类,认为它们对应于现在所说的补语和宾语。马氏力图用介词来区分止词和转词,但“动字后的无介转词”的存在让他很为难,他不得不用“介词省略说”来解释,他对“动字后的无介转词”的分析也存在许多问题,这一定程度上影响了转词这一概念在马氏语法体系中的价值。然而马氏注意到的这种语法现象引起了后人的注意,产生了很大的影响。后来的语法研究批判并发展了马氏的观点,对“动字后的无介转词”作了更好的处理。
