Bulk Polymerization of Styrene Using Benzyl Dithiobenzoate as a Chain Transfer

Bulk polymerization of styrene was carried out in the presence of a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) of benzyl dithiobenzoate (BDB). The comparison between reaction systems with and without BDB indicates that there is significant retardation in the reaction rate when BDB is used. The molecular weight of styrene polymer prepared with BDB shows linear relationship with the conversion of monomer, polydispersity is as narrow as 1.2, and no gel effects are observed during the polymerization with BDB, which are characteristics of a living radical polymerization. It has been found that the concentrations of BDB and azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) have opposite effects on the polymerization kinetics, and the AIBN dominates.

Defining parental involvement： The Israeli case

During the past decade, Israeli parents declared their rights to be involved in their children＇s education. The term used is ＂parental involvement＂, but there is no real agreement on the definition of the term. This paper describes the different opinions and approaches of parents, teachers, students, principals and decision makers, as found and described by Israeli researchers. The development, definitions and boundaries of the term are introduced. Even though the research in Israel is on a Hebrew term and this discussion is in English, the processes involved translate well, as these processes are in a well developed country, based on democracy and Western culture and an education system established under the British Mandate with its historical traces.     

Surface motion of alluvial valley in layered half-space for incident plane P-waves

The indirect boundary element method (IBEM) is used to study the surface motion of an alluvial valley in layered half-space for incident plane P-waves based on Wolf’s theory. Firstly, the free field response can be solved by the direct stiffness method, and the scattering wave response is calculated by Green’s functions of distributed loads acting on inclined lines in a layered half-space. The method is verified by comparing its results with literature and numerical analyses are performed by taking the amplification of incident plane P-waves by an alluvial valley in one soil layer resting on bedrock as an example. The results show that there exist distinct differences between the wave amplification by an alluvial valley embedded in layered half-space and that in homogeneous half-space and there is interaction between the valley and the soil layer. The amplitudes are relatively large when incident frequencies are close to the soil layer’s resonant frequencies.

A Glimpse at SR & SU through Four Basic English and Chinese Color Words

It has been a long debate between the semantic relativists and the semantic universalists. The relativity semanticists believe that there are as many conceptual systems as there are languages, while the universal semanticists hold the view that language is a single conceptual system. Color words are frequently adopted as an evidence or counter-evidence. In the paper, the four English color words"white, black, green, red"will be contrasted with those of Chinese"白,黑,绿,红". Through the contrast, a tentative conclusion is drawn that the weak version of the semantic universality is probably more acceptable.     

Stability performance of buckling-restrained brace with brace joints

The stability and ductility of four buckling-restrained braces （BRBs） with brace joints were studied. The load-carrying element of BRB was fabricated with steel （Chinese Q235）, and a layer of colloidal silica sheet （0.5 mm in thickness） or four layers of plastic film （0.2 mm in thickness） were used as unbonding materials to provide space to prevent the buckling of inner core in higher modes and facilitate its lateral expansion in case of compression. Based on the equation of BRBs with brace joints of different restrained stiffnesses, the buckling load is calculated considering the initial geometric imperfections and residual stress, and the theoretical values agree well with the experiment re- sults. It is concluded that the buckling load and ductility of BRBs are influenced greatly by the restrained stiffness of brace joints. If the restrained stiffness is deficient, the unstrained segment of BRBs with less stiffness will buckle firstly. As a result, the ultimate load of BRBs decreases, and the maximum compression load is reduced to about 65% of the maximum tension load; the stiffness also degenerates, and there is a long decreasing stage on the back-bone curve in compression phase; the ductility decreases, i.e., the ultimate tension ductility and ultimate compression ductil- ity are approximately 15 and 1.3 respectively, and the cumulative plastic ductility is only approximately 200. If the restrained stiffness of joint is large enough, the stability will be improved as follows： the yielding strength and ultimate strength of BRBs are nearly the same, and there is an obvious strain intensification in both tension and compression phases; the ductility of brace also increases obviously, i.e., the ultimate tension ductility and ultimate compression ductility are both approximately 14, and the cumulative plastic ductility reaches 782.     

Formative Use of Language Assessment： Supporting Learning Through the Medium of a Second Language

Over the last decade, there has been an increased interest in investigation of assessment for learning. However, to date, there are still very few studies that investigated assessment for language learning or formative language assessment, focusing particularly on： （a） effects of formative assessment on learners＇ linguistic development and on teachers＇ teaching and lesson planning; （b） variables influencing the frequency and extent of effectiveness of formative assessment; （c） teachers＇ and learners＇ views on teacher feedback and learner peer- and self- assessment; and （d） fulfilment of the requirements set in the official United Kingdom （UK） policy documents on effective teaching and assessment of learners with English as an additional language （EAL）, also known as English as an second language （ESL） in the United States （U.S.）, in real classrooms. This article addressed these issues, and thus, extended the limited knowledge base on formative language assessment research to date. Moreover, through examining classroom-embedded language assessment processes from various perspectives, this research paper made a link between two research areas： （a） language testing and assessment; and （b） second language acquisition, also a relatively neglected field of research. This paper investigated two intact primary immersion classrooms, with learners as young as 8-10 years old and teachers whose teaching roles in the classrooms differed; two teachers were mainstream classroom teachers （CTs） and one was a mainstream teacher with specific responsibilities for language development in the school. The data were derived from literacy, numeracy, and science lessons through classroom observations and from the research participants through interviews. The data were firstly transcribed and coded qualitatively and then analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings revealed that various language assessment strategies were used regardless of the subject area of the les

English Learning Styles and English Achievements of Students Majoring in P.E.,Art and Music

Learning styles are considered as an important individual difference of affecting learning efficiency and English achievements.This research focuses on the sophomores whose majors are Physical Education (P.E.),Art and Music (P.A.M.students) in Yangtze Normal University to investigate into total learning styles,the relationships concerning major,English achievement respectively with learning styles.The results show that participants prefer group learning style rather than auditory learning style;there is no possible links between learning styles and their majors,and English achievements.
