Pillbox: a solid dosage medication identification tool

Pillbox is a tool that can be used to rapidly identify solid dosage medications. The database, created and maintained by the National Library of Medicine with the support of the Food and Drug Administration, seeks to enhance patient safety through the identification of solid dosage medication. Users enter physical characteristics of a medication, possible matches are provided, and links to additional resources are offered. A comparison with comparable resources was conducted, and future enhancements to Pillbox are discussed.

通过对部分高校图书馆投入使用的自建特色数据库的调查和了解,发现在使用过程中普遍存在以下问题:利用率偏低;维护、更新工作滞后; 忽视安全管理工作;共建共享特色数据库资源有待落实。为此,提出以下建议:加强宣传和推广工作;长期维护,及时修正、更新,保持特色数据库的生命力;加强安全管理工作;充分挖掘和利用特色数据库;实现真正意义上的资源共享,以充分发挥特色数据库的效用和功能。     

Comparing Advertising Agencies’ Resources to Academic Libraries’ Collections

Abstract

Collection development analysis in academic libraries typically involves collection-centered and user-centered methods. These approaches focus on building collections that help students with their academic needs but may overlook resources that students need experience with when employed. To address this gap, the authors analyzed early-career advertising agency positions to identify a list of information resources that advertising agencies expect employees to use. This list was then compared against the library websites of 158 universities with advertising programs to see how sufficiently libraries are fulfilling these resource needs. The authors found that overall, university libraries only subscribe to a small number of resources used by advertising agencies.

The Read/Write Web and the Future of Library Research

ABSTRACT

The new, social Web is fun and easy to use. The same cannot usually be said of library Web sites and digital resources. Libraries would benefit from incorporating aspects of the Read/Write Web into their services. This article examines how libraries currently erect barriers to service and provides an example of how these barriers could be eliminated by the creation of a social library research environment.     

多语种多数据库中草药检索系统

随着互联网络的发展，网上的资源越来越多，各开放式的数据库也不断出现，为使用户能更好地使用网络资源，有几百个搜索引擎在Internet上服务于用户。然而，搜索引擎只能实现对页面的搜索，不能实现对数据库内部的搜索，而后者又是目前人们关注的问题。另外，Internet的用户遍布全世界，所使用的语言各不相同，实现对多语种数据的检索亦是IT界人士研究的问题。本文以中草药数据为基础，通过建立一个多语种的词表实现多语种的检索，以及建立一套URL命令集实现了对多个风格不同的数据库进行检索、连接的问题。

Venturing forth: Venture capital and private equity information in academic business libraries

ABSTRACT

Due to limited disclosure requirements, obtaining private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) information presents challenges to academic researchers. However, the universe of commercially available resources that focus on private equity and venture capital has increased substantially over the past decade. This article examines recent academic business literature to evaluate whether resources from newer providers in this subject area (CB Insights, PitchBook, Preqin, PrivCo) are gaining traction among academic researchers. It also matches the resources that researchers are citing to library holdings in an effort to measure library support for PE/VC research. The results indicate that data from traditional providers (Dow Jones, S&P Capital IQ, Thomson Reuters) continues to be heavily used and that libraries are providing moderate support for PE/VC research.     

Evaluating E-resource Collections in a Business School Library: A Comparative Study of Aggregator Packages at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad Library

The need to continuously evaluate resource usage, whether in print or online, has been a challenge for libraries for a long time. The shift in resources to digital formats has made gauging the utility of resources more convenient as well as enabling cross database comparisons on various parameters. In this context, the article explores the aggregator databases subscribed by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad library. The study compares EBSCO's Business Source Complete, EBSCO's Academic Search Premier, Proquest's ABI INFORM Complete, JSTOR, and Project Muse packages in terms of the features available, usage, and the most used journals in these packages.

作权问题是数字图书馆建设中的一个不容忽视的问题，本对数字图书馆信息资源建设过程中的馆藏献数字化，数据库建设，网络信息资源馆藏化所涉及的作权问题进行了深入的探讨，并提出了相应的解决办法。     

Use of Electronic Information Resources Among Research Scholars in the Islamia University of Bahawalpur,Pakistan

This study examined the use of electronic resources among academic scholars of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), Punjab, Pakistan. A quantitative survey was found most convenient and useful for this study. The total population of the study was 169 research students in IUB. The response rate was 79% and 133 utilizable responses were coded and analyzed by using SPSS software. Results of the study showed that most of the researchers (61%) used electronic resources daily for many purposes and reasons. Most of them (57%) were “satisfied” with the usage of electronic resources. Learning, education, and research were the main purposes, and easy use and easy access to documents were the major reasons of using these resources. Lack of internet connection is the major problem faced by the respondents.     

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Abstract

This knowledge path is divided into five sections covering basic patent questions, the U.S. patents database, patent law (statutes, regulations, treaties and court cases), statistics and general information patent Web sites. The U.S. patent database file, the text of patent laws and regulations, and statistics are available from the USPTO Web site. Since USPTO does not compile a complete list of court cases pertaining to patents, better resources for this kind of information exist outside of the Patent Office. Web sites included in the general information section either bring together and organize a large number of patent information resources or provide easy to understand explanations of patent law.
