In 2008, Fudan University Library (FDUL) in Shanghai and Belk Library and Information Commons at Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, North Carolina created a three-year librarian exchange program. The first pair of librarian exchanges occurred during the 2009–2010 academic year, with the Appalachian State librarian traveling to Fudan for five weeks during the Fall of 2009, and the first librarian from Fudan traveling to Appalachian State for five months in the spring and summer of 2010. This paper documents how the first exchanges revealed interesting similarities and differences in the academic library service models between the two universities which are illustrative of general similarities and differences between Chinese and American academic library services. The paper also discusses how any academic library can benefit from the experience of a librarian exchange program with a partner library in another country.The experience gained from these first exchanges confirms on an international level the basic assertion that a major role of an academic library is to support the university’s curriculum.Moreover it can be extrapolated from discussions held between librarians of the two institutions that in both the United States and China the curriculum evolves in response to reforms on campus and to changing trends within the country’s education system. It was also determined that the modes of library services in both cultures change as new technologies arise and that the pace of technological change within academic libraries is rapid and ongoing. Participants in the exchange discovered that there are strengths and weaknesses in both the ASU and FDUL service models and that the librarians from both systems can learn from one another and absorb best practices from their exchange partners. This paper reflects the views and experiences of the exchange librarians (Shi and Johnson) and also author Shao, who is a Chinese national working as a faculty fellow librarian at Appalachian State University.  相似文献

Abstract

The Upward Bound Program has existed in the United States to offer support to underprivileged high school students. The University of Toledo Libraries participated in an Upward Bound Collaborative with community members and faculty to provide support for Upward Bound students during the academic year. Carlson Library made a commitment to offer bibliographic instruction and additional follow-up contact with the summer residential Upward Bound students. A survey of library participation in Ohio Upward Bound programs shows levels of library and Upward Bound program partnerships. Libraries should play an active role in providing library instruction to Upward Bound students to uphold the ultimate goal of access and success in higher education.  相似文献

In an attempt to meet ever-changing users’ needs, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Libraries implemented virtual reference services such as e-mail, chat, and, most recently, instant messaging, in increments and via various services and vendors. Each option consistently met with a lukewarm response and less-than-desirable reference transaction numbers. After investigating the virtual reference experiences of other academic institutions, and after the advent of a more flexible Webpage design, the UNL Libraries decided to pilot strategic placement of the QuestionPoint Instant Message Qwidget on multiple pages of the library Website. Data collected in the Fall 2008 and 2009 semesters test the hypothesis that 2009 sessions utilizing the strategically placed Qwidget resulted in significantly higher sessions than 2008. The strategic placement of the Qwidget resulted in a drastic increase in reference interactions in the 2009 academic year when compared to the 2008 academic year. The overall increase in reference transactions, along with a consistent increase throughout the academic year, indicate that instant messaging reference service is of interest to our users, as long as placement of the service is prominent.  相似文献

我国台湾地区图书资讯与档案学起源于武昌文华图专。文章采用LDA主题模型分析法,以2009-2018年间出版的1,326篇期刊论文、1,288篇博硕学位论文、342项研究计划、1,271种专书与会议论文集作为研究对象,从文献数量、核心作者、主题分布、主题演化4个方面探讨台湾地区图书资讯与档案学的发展现状与趋势,并从图书馆参考服务研究、电子资源与资讯系统研究、数位典藏研究、数位学习与资讯素养研究、电子书与数位阅读研究,以及资讯需求与资讯行为研究6大研究主题对近10年学科领域发展状况进行详细论述,为海峡两岸学术交流提供参考。研究发现,资讯科技的出现带动了数位典藏、数位学习、数位阅读等数位化研究的发展,推动了图书馆服务项目的转型升级,凸显出以资讯使用者为体、资讯服务为用的学科理念,以及学科研究融入社会的趋势。  相似文献

Like many academic libraries, the University of Florida Smathers Library held annual book sales to generate funds and reduce its stock of gift materials that were not selected for library collections. Instead of one-day sales that generated healthy profits but always left large proportions of unsold items, library administrators decided to open an experimental bookstore to sell year round the non-selected gift materials. This paper describes the specifics of how the author—the Gifts and Exchange Librarian—oversaw the opening of a used bookstore in the University of Florida Smathers Library. It also includes the results of a survey completed by staff at six other academic libraries operating bookstores. Based on the successful experiences of the Smathers Library Bookstore and the survey responses, the author concludes that bookstores can be an efficient and more profitable alternative to book sales for disposing of non-selected gift materials.  相似文献

Since 2009, Open Access (OA) Week has been celebrated worldwide in October each year. It is an opportunity for librarians to engage with the research community and demonstrate the value that they bring to their organisations in the area of disseminating scholarly output. Although thousands of events have been held since the inception of OA Week, a minimal amount of research has been carried out regarding the impact of these events. This article presents a review of the literature on OA Week and evaluates the effectiveness of three events held during OA Week 2015 in Ireland through the use of statistics and a survey. The three events held during OA Week 2015 in Ireland that were evaluated include: a seminar run by Repository Network Ireland (RNI), a D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) campaign using OA materials organized by Dr. Steevens' Library, and a collaborative OA seminar between Dr. Steevens' Library and Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) libraries. The author concludes that a collaborative approach to planning and managing OA week between librarians from academic and other sectors can have tangible benefits both in terms of promoting OA and also promoting the role of the Librarian in the OA movement.  相似文献

ArXiv是一个由康乃尔大学图书馆运营的重要开放获取系统,在国际科学家团体中起着重要的作用。为了推动ArXiv在我国相关领域的普及,促进我国科技界积极参与ArXiv预印本论文的存缴和资源的有效利用,中国科学院国家科学图书馆于2012年8月发起成立中国ArXiv服务工作组的倡议,得到国内多家主要图书馆的响应。2012年10月22日,在"中国开放获取推介周"上,国内10家重要机构成立"中国ArXiv服务工作组",主要探讨ArXiv在科研成果开放发表中的特殊地位,分析ArXiv在中国科技界的主要应用情况,研讨中国ArXiv服务工作组将如何更有效地推动ArXiv在中国科技界中的普及和应用。  相似文献

On May 19, 2009, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Members Council held its 90th and final meeting. It was the end of an era that began in 1977, when the Ohio College Library Center changed its name to OCLC and adopted a new governance structure that extended membership in the cooperative to libraries outside Ohio. In the ensuing 30 years, libraries around the world elected 450 delegates to attend three Council meetings each year at OCLC.  相似文献

To examine the evolving role of the Master of Library Science (MLS) degree in academic libraries, pooled cross-sectional data were collected from job advertisements in College and Research Library News. Beginning with 1975 and continuing at 5-year intervals through 2005, pertinent information from all job advertisements in each monthly issue were compiled. The data produced many interesting facts, such as job openings requiring an MLS peaked in the early 1990s, and that there is a significant drop in a prerequisite MLS beginning in the year 2000.  相似文献

查修是20世纪中国著名的图书馆学家,曾在文华图专执教,亦曾在多家图书馆工作。但由于查修晚年移民海外,远离了中国图书馆界,以至于中国图书馆史研究者对于查修的生平与成就了解极少。作者努力查考文献,弄清了查修的字、号、英文姓名、籍贯与出生年份。然后,考察了查修在文华图专与伊利诺伊大学的求学经历。接着梳理了查修的工作履历,包括他在清华学校图书馆、文华图专、暨南大学图书馆、交通大学图书馆的图书馆管理与图书馆学教学经历,他的报人生涯,及其晚年移民海外的部分活动。最后介绍了查修在图书分类法、目录学等图书馆学研究领域的著译成果。  相似文献

Integrating information literacy into the academic curriculum has been a core role for the University of Auckland Library for at least 10 years. The role of subject librarians is evolving from that of being service providers to being educators who are active contributors in curricular design in higher education. However, a research project conducted by the Library found that many of its subject librarians were uncertain how to promote the integration of information literacy to academic staff, and that they felt they lacked the pedagogic knowledge and skills to do so. This paper will explore the development of a programme for subject librarians which focuses on the practical aspects of how to integrate information literacy into an academic curriculum. The theoretical basis of the programme is largely based on the doctoral research of Dr. Li Wang who developed a systematic model for integrating IL into an undergraduate programme at the University of Auckland. Elements of the programme are explained and outcomes, after two years of running the programme, are explored.  相似文献

During the summer of 2002, Cornell University Library implemented the Cornell University Library Junior Fellows Program-an initiative aimed at introducing high school students of color to academic libraries and librarianship. The six-week program was developed in response to the need for innovative approaches to the recruitment and retention of people of color to the academic library profession. Additionally, the program sought to support the academic achievement of minority students through involvement in research and technology training opportunities. This paper outlines the program's curriculum, performance outcomes, and challenges, and includes discussion of the need for similar programs or initiatives to be designed and implemented at other libraries.  相似文献

Although e-books date back to the 1970s, the peak of academic adoption was in the early to mid-2000s. At the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year, the Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Library had roughly 500,000 print volumes cataloged and only 12 e-books. By the end of that year, the catalog contained approximately 120,000 e-books. In February 2014, the F&M College Library conducted a campus-wide survey about e-books. By comparing these results with F&M’s usage statistics, the Library found practical suggestions on how to improve current acceptance and usage of e-books.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In August, 1992, during a two-week hiatus between summer school and fall semester, Illinois State University's Milner Library suffered an arson fire. Nine days later, the library opened its doors and offered complete services. Although recovery was quick and damage minimal, staff learned the value of what may prove useful to others: revising disaster plans, taking proactive steps to secure building safety, on-going staff training, and jointly planning recovery actions with maintenance personnel.  相似文献
