This report provides a brief summary for trends in 2011 China publishing industry in general and the book publishing sector specifically. A general industry review and analysis includes the number of titles, list prices and units as a 5?year overview. The report for 2011 concludes with a summary for two main trends that have emerged over the recent years.     

Studies of the Publishing Industry’s Cultural Quality

Publishing belongs to the information content industry in essence, where “the content is the king, the brand brings success”. Whether the content of the publication is appealing, accessible, attractive and influential depends on its cultural content. That is why we pay special attention to the research on cultural quality in relation to online publishing technology and information systems transmission. This article presents an in-depth research on this issue from three aspects: why should the research on cultural quality be emphasized; how to understand culture and cultural quality; what are the principles and conditions to form the cultural quality.

A Look Inside the Development of POD in China’s Book Publishing Industry

This article focuses on the POD services for the publishing industry from 2000 to 2016 in China, by looking at some key numbers and introducing several companies and publishers who have invested in the POD business, looking at their business models, advantages and disadvantages. Also this article will share some first-hand information and ideas from people in both the publishing and printing industries.     

A Study of the Global Ranking of Taiwan’s Book Publishing Market

The purpose of the study was to investigate where Taiwan’s Publishing Market would have been ranked, had Taiwan been included in the Map of 23 largest book markets in the world presented by Wischenbart in 2014. The results of the study showed: (1) The total new titles published were 1839/million residents, which would have been ranked 2nd; (2) The per capital spending on books was €39.75, which would have been ranked 17th; and (3) Taiwan’s GDP (PPP) per capital was $42,201 International Dollars, which would have been ranked 10th. i.e. Taiwan’s Publishing Market is alive, vibrant, and deserved to be recognized.     

Argentina’s Publishing Scene: A Key Player at a Changing Era

With a strong publishing production, the largest readership in the Spanish language, and a new generation of publishers already in business, Argentina will pass a period of economic instability to regain its natural strength, while facing both the challenges and opportunities of a highly concentrated market. A review of the five major Spanish language publishing countries will be presented to place the role of Argentina into a proper context.     

Current Status of Copyright Awareness of China’s Publishing Corporations

This paper is based on an investigation of copyright awareness by 24 publishing groups and its 163 publishing corporations in China through visiting their websites and interviews. Based on the collected information, this paper gives a comprehensive analysis about the copyright awareness of publishing corporations in China based on the following three perspectives: the administrative organization, the copyright column on the publisher’s website and the contacts made about anti-piracy.     

Children’s Book Publishing in India

Very, very little is known about the children’s book publishing industry of India. This paper looks at book production aimed at a predominantly young readership base and attempts to identify the success areas and the gaps. The absence of statistics within the industry is particularly telling: it indicates the existence of a non-traditional book business and also points to alarming levels of piracy. At the same time, the growth of the traditional publishing industry has been seen as spectacular and unlikely, and growth patterns are proving to be unpredictable. This paper attempts to map trends with the limited resources available. The scope of the study, given the geographical and demographic nature of India, is broad. The focus is on both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the industry.     

An Optometry Librarian’s Vision: Improved Student Scholarly Communication

Health profession students benefit academically, clinically, and professionally when they acquire the writing skills necessary for scholarly communication. The purpose of this article is to discuss how a solo, embedded health science librarian spearheaded collaborative efforts and contributed to the creation of a scaffolded writing program within the existing optometry curriculum. The article includes a discussion of the opportunities, challenges, and outcomes of this writing endeavor.     

Diversity’s discontents: in search of an archive of the oppressed

ABSTRACT

Australian and US-based archivists have recently begun to confront their complicity in a documentary landscape that excludes and erases the voices and views of minority, oppressed and poor communities. Archival professional organisations in both countries attempt to confront this issue by focusing on the homogeneity of the profession, specifically through using the discourse of diversity. Thus, this keynote address, delivered at the 2017 conference of the Australian Society of Archivists in Melbourne, explores the following question: how, if at all, does diversity form part of the solution for dismantling the white supremacy of archives? It begins this inquiry by recounting the author’s participation and experience with diversity projects of the Society of American Archivists, before speculating how archivists might transition away from the language of diversity and towards the language of liberation through the concept of an archive of the oppressed. The central argument of the address is that dismantling white supremacy in archives requires archivists abandon the neoliberal discourse of diversity and adopt an archive of the oppressed, or a cooperative approach in which oppressed peoples are positioned as subjects in our own liberation.

This paper analyzes the market share, business models and development path of these four operators.     

A Bibliography of Littleton’s Tenures as an Archetype for the Study of Early English Legal Printing

For hundreds of years, bibliographies have been invaluable tools for researchers, collectors, and institutions, to provide contextual understanding as well as adding depth to collections. In this piece, the author uses his updated bibliography of the first 200 years of Littleton's Tenures to examine many aspects of early English legal printing. These include the development and evolution of the content of early legal materials, as well economic and other factors driving the market for printed law books. Preceding the bibliography is a list of fundamental bibliographic terms concerning early printing, contextually applied to Littleton's Tenures.
