In recent years academic journal publishers have explored a variety of new business models. The Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress), founded by professors in 1999, now publishes 39 electronic‐only journals. bepress's own model rests on three principles: improve, but do not break, the traditional journal; allow non‐subscribers to read articles as guests; and offer reasonable and sustainable prices to libraries. This model has resulted in steady growth. Even in the shifting landscape of open access, there remains a place for professional journal publishers who offer innovative improvements, traditionally qualified content, and reasonable prices.  相似文献

This paper examines how the free distribution of electronic information on the internet is rapidly changing the commercial environment for small to medium‐sized print publishers, and suggests some recommendations for publishers in the process of establishing their own web strategies. It begins by addressing the concept of the ‘network economy’ and the way in which electronic networks have changed the fundamental economics of many businesses. It then suggests seven recommendations for learned and professional society publishers adapting their own business models to the web, highlighting the need to differentiate print from electronic products by building an electronic information services portal for current members and subscribers.  相似文献

We conducted a survey of radio station program directors and general managers to explore the perception and role of innovation within radio programming and the key factors that influence this perception. In the study, we found that, in general, programmers and general managers perceive little innovation in programming except at their own stations. Results also indicate perceptions that more risk taking is needed in radio programming, that risk taking is essential for the financial health of a station, that increased artist diversity and an innovative music rotation influence the perception of innovation at the station level, and that too many commercials are being placed within an average hour of programming.  相似文献

Argentine publishers are in the middle of an accelerated transition into the digital era. Print-on-demand, selling directly through publishers´ websites and e-commerce in general, are opening new roads for the book market. Mercado Libre, the biggest e-commerce platform in the region, is becoming the decisive player, where all bookstores, big and small upload their own sites. The migration from print books to ebooks is more than a change of format; it is also the first step in an ongoing process, whose final outcome is hard to predict. Ebooks are likely to lead to a restructuring of the industry by enabling cross-border commerce. This in turn is likely to lead to difficult disputes over territorial rights. It appears probable that these disputes will be resolved by an assertion of the dominance of the American market and the publishers that already serve it well, as authors are likely to place their rights with practitioners in the largest markets. This in turn will lead to the acquisition of many smaller “national” publishers, which cannot compete on a world stage with truly global publishers. But rather than simply becoming sources of editorial product for American-based global marketing machines, smaller publishers operating in different regions will respond through innovation, both in product design (attempting to do electronically what cannot be done in print) and in developing new marketing plans that the giant publishers would be indisposed to pursue.  相似文献

The requirements for providing publications in an accessible form have recently become much clearer and easier to comply with. They are based on standard web accessibility guidelines that are commonly used globally, and the format for interchange is EPUB, a format many publishers already produce in their normal production process. Nevertheless, accessibility still proves difficult to accomplish for most publishers. This article refers to informal interviews and the author's own experiences to examine the issues that are challenging to publishers and their suppliers, assessing the level of effort required to address them, discussing the factors that make them difficult, and suggesting strategies for reducing the effort required. The article concludes that the best solution is to build accessibility into the publication workflow upfront as this can dramatically reduce the cost and effort required to make publications accessible.  相似文献

Abstract

This article delves into a few areas of copyright law that academic authors often overlook: joint author’s rights and the work made for hire doctrine. Scholarly publications produced by university professors often include more than one author. The default copyright laws apply to any such works if there is no specific written agreement to the contrary. Thus, it is important to understand what those default rules are in order to determine whether it is appropriate to deviate from them in an author agreement. Similarly, the work made for hire doctrine would normally apply to make all work produced by professors owned by the university. Luckily, many universities do not wish to own such work and give it back to professors through university statutes and other governing documents. However, it is crucial to understand whether the default rules apply or the university permits professors to negotiate their own author agreements with publishers. Finally, if authors own their own scholarly works, publishers can expect that they will negotiate their rights in the publishing agreements to benefit the terms most favorable to the author. And yet, many faculty members simply sign a standard authorship agreement without asking for concessions on the part of the publisher. Thus, this article empowers professors to exercise their copyright rights to the full extent of the law and to negotiate their author’s agreements to benefit themselves and society as a whole through open access and the use of Creative Commons licenses.  相似文献

A surprisingly large proportion of publishers believe that their businesses will move over the next five years from the creation, marketing and distribution of physical products toward the management of rights and royalties. Neither the industry nor individual publishers are ready for such a transition. Although publishing is and has been a rights business, few publishers methodically manage the rights that they own or control in ways that fully reflect this. This article reviews the contention that U.S. laws favor copyright owners over consumers, and pre-existing models over innovation. The relationship of commercial publishers to the Open Access movement is compared to that of the creators/users of file sharers and the Record Industry. The library literature bears out the contention that journal publishers have exhibited some of the behaviors that contributed to the decline of the major record labels. [目的/意义]综合运用定性与定量相结合的方法对近年中外情报学论文的创新性进行分析和对比,揭示情报学领域研究的创新性特征,发现领域学术论文中创新句内部的知识关系,进行更细粒度的论文创新性分析,为研究领域创新点深层次利用提供条件,同时丰富科技论文创新性监测的途径,促进科学研究创新。[方法/过程]从句子级创新性识别出发,选取中英文各两种情报学期刊作为样本,采用信息抽取和机器学习的方法,将创新句的抽取从现有的摘要扩展到全文,充分利用句子结构和句法特征识别领域创新内容,探讨近年中外情报学论文在创新对象、主题、类别等方面的特征,并做对比分析,最后通过对自动分类的论文集合进行定性的内容分析,总结归纳出中外情报学论文创新的表达范式。[结果/结论]从创新的表达来看,中外情报学论文创新句的分布情况基本一致,英文期刊论文创新的表达更丰富。从创新性特征来看,英文情报学期刊论文创新主题较集中,而中文主题多样和分散;具体方法的创新是近年情报学领域的创新热点,而在研究方法上创新不足;中英文情报学期刊论文的创新性特点都反映了应用研究、实证研究的成果较多,而理论创新推动缓慢的趋势。  相似文献

Louisa May Alcott was one of the most popular authors of the nineteenth century. However, Alcott’s literary career would not have been so successful without the help and advice of various publishers and editors, such as W.W. Clapp, Frank Leslie, James Redpath, James Elliott, A.K. Loring, and most notably Thomas Niles of Roberts Brothers. All of these publishers or editors helped Alcott to develop from a writer of lurid, sensational tales to the accomplished professional author of American classics. In the nineteenth century, it was more than often the publisher who exerted great influence over the nature of a literary work, from its subject matter to its marketing. This article focuses on Alcott’s relationships with her many publishers and shows how they helped Alcott develop her own style and subjects into a rewarding career as a writer. 为避免传统同行评审形式出现的诸多弊端,学术出版界不断探索新的同行评议方法,出现了诸多的创新。本文主要对当前正在尝试的新兴同行评审方法进行调查,并介绍相关经验。这些创新方法包括开放性同行评审、非选择性同行评审、开放预审稿件的公众评审、便携式同行评审、反弹式同行评审、背书式同行评审。调查结果显示,同行评审实践发生了巨大的变化,与互联网革命和开放获取出版紧密相关,科学出版商为作者提供了更多的选择,新的同行评议形式为学术交流注入了新的活力。  相似文献

MedBiquitous is a consortium whose members are working to develop a common technology framework that will support reforms in healthcare education and competence assessment. The mission of MedBiquitous is to advance healthcare education through technology standards that promote professional competence, collaboration, and better patient care. The consortium members include professional medical associations, technology companies, e‐learning firms, and publishers, among others. Two publishers actively working within MedBiquitous are John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and the American Academy of Pediatrics, who are pursuing their own objectives to help to create improved online medical communities.  相似文献
