Intimacy and Self-Abstraction: Radio as New Media in Aboriginal Australia

In the first decade of the twenty-first century, a number of Indigenous radio stations around Australia began to use digital programming and digital music libraries, at times pre-programming their broadcast signal days in advance through various forms of digital audio workstation (DAW). This shift initially caused both celebration and concern, and occasioned reflection by many producers on how radio ought to work and sound. For some producers the shift to digital pre-programming seemed a threat to the intimate address that Aboriginal radio entailed. On the other hand, some of these same producers began to re-imagine the audience to which such indigenous media might now aspire and to celebrate the sheer quantity of Aboriginal programming that a smaller number of producers could now produce. In challenging radio's naturalised ‘liveness’ for Aboriginal radio producers this oscillation suggests a distinct media ideology (Gershon 2010a), a sense of what radio media ought to accomplish, that draws together forms of intimate address and public abstraction. In my analysis I re-imagine John Durham Peters' heuristic dichotomy of dialogue and dissemination as a tension between intimacy and self-abstraction in order to suggest how radio as ‘new media’ continues to animate some longstanding dynamics of Aboriginal cultural production.     

The Regional Dimension: How Regional Media Systems Condition Global Climate-Change Communication

Abstract

Global perspectives and national approaches have dominated studies of climate-change communication, reflecting the global nature of climate change as well as the traditional research focus on national media systems. In the absence of a global public sphere, however, transnational issue attention is largely dependent on regional media systems, yet the role this regional dimension plays has been largely overlooked. This article presents a comparative study of climate-change coverage in three geo-cultural regions, The Middle East, Scandinavia, and North America, and explores the link between global climate-change communication and regional media systems. It finds that regional variations in climate-change communication carry important communicative implications concerning perceptions of climate change's relevance and urgency.     

Simulating the Ethical Community: Interactive Game Media and Engaging Human Rights Claims

Abstract

This paper examines the external bystander’s (un)ethical engagement with the suffering of distant others in the brave new world of the 21st century, where, thanks to the growth of information technologies, we are all daily spectators and bystanders of human atrocity. In a recent turn, humanitarian movements have sought to incite their audiences to action through the use of simulation and new game media – the last few years have seen a surge of ‘serious games’ such as Darfur is Dying and Sim Sweatshop, as well as the creation in online community Second Life of simulated refugee camps and political protests. The paper draws on the post‐modern theories of Jean Baudrillard and Slavoj ?i?ek, as well as the ethical philosophies of Michael Ignatieff, Stanley Cohen and Avishai Margalit, to expose the limitations of this move, arguing that interactivity and public remembering via online simulations are more properly aligned, in the real world, to interpassivity and ethical amnesia than to the forging of an effective ethical community of human beings.     

Media Framing of Terrorism: Implications for Public Opinion,Civil Liberties,and Counterterrorism Policies

Abstract

This study presents experimental findings on the impact of media framing of the 2005 London bombings. A total of 371 American participants were exposed to one of two frames to test their effect on public attitudes towards civil liberties and Muslims, and support for counterterrorism policies. Results show that the “domestic homegrown” frame produces greater increases in fear than the “international” frame. This leads to greater support for restricting civil liberties of Muslims and, under certain circumstances, general feelings of negativity toward Muslims. The study also finds support for the hydraulic effect of framing in that the domestic homegrown frame suppresses party identification in attitude formation.     

Virtual Cosmopolitanism: Constructing Third Cultures and Transmitting Social and Cultural Capital Through Social Media

Increasingly, individuals interested in intercultural communication can turn to computer-mediated communication (CMC), particularly social media, to discursively construct hybridized cultures. This essay examines how CMC can facilitate virtual cosmopolitanism and virtual third cultures by reviewing current literature on virtual third culture spaces and ethnographic data exploring virtual cosmopolitanism.

黄裳留给浙江的人文风景

2012年9月5日傍晚,黄裳先生在上海瑞金医院离世,正在93岁的高龄上。他的离去让很多人忆念他。他给浙江留下了很多人文风景。黄裳先生有多重身份:记者、散文家、翻译家、藏书家和版本学家。黄裳是记者出身,1945年至1956年曾在《文汇报》担任记者、编辑,后在上海电影剧本创作所做编剧,在新闻、戏剧、出版领域均有建树。他和梅兰芳、盖叫天、巴金、黄永玉、施蜇存等名家交往密切,是一个学识渊博又富有情趣的人。     

明弘正间审美主义倾向之流布

明代文学自永乐年间始为重事功、重义理的台阁体文学所擅坛 ,经洪、宣、正、景、天、成诸代 ,至弘、正间才有所变化 ,其中一重要的原因即审美主义要素的大幅度增长 ,遂取代了尚质论文学观的地位 ,也只有在这一背景之下 ,才有了我们今天把握到的明中后期文学的一个差异性面貌。鉴于长期以来 ,文学史与文论史界疏于对这一变化状态及其复杂性等的研究 ,本文试图在此有限的篇幅中 ,经过具体考察 ,对相关问题作些开掘。     

Durability aspects of ancient mortars of the archeological site of Olynthos

In order to conserve the archeological site of Olynthos, a systematic study of materials preceded. The analysis of mortar samples taken from the remains of ancient Olynthos (400 BC) showed that different qualities of mortars were used for different purposes. Almost impermeable mortars were found in contact with draining canals. This was the initiative to start a combined analysis of mortars by determining their physical and chemical characteristics in order to find the textural features and the alterations of the structure in order to understand their resistance to weathering.The paper focuses on the interrelation of findings from the above-referred examinations. The use of reactive siliceous materials in combination with lime as well as the excellent gradation of aggregates used seems to be the secrets of the good performance of the ancient mortars.
