The Role of Consistency in Detecting Deception: The Superiority of Correspondence over Coherence

Inconsistency is often considered an indication of deceit. The conceptualization of consistency used in deception research, however, has not made a clear distinction between two concepts long differentiated by philosophers: coherence and correspondence. The existing literature suggests that coherence is not generally useful for deception detection. Correspondence, however, appears to be quite useful. The present research developed a model of how correspondence is utilized to make judgments, and this article reports on four studies designed to elaborate on the model. The results suggest that judges attend strongly to correspondence and that they do so in an additive fashion. As noncorrespondent information accumulates, an increasingly smaller proportion of judges make truthful assessments of guilty suspects. This work provides a basic framework for examining how information is utilized to make deception judgments and forms the correspondence and coherence module of truth-default theory.     

David McDowell: Forgotten man of letters

In the fall of 1957, with the financial backing of his partner Ivan Obolensky, David McDowell released the first book list of McDowell, Obolensky, Inc. It was a small but auspicious debut: two of the six titles released that season garnered extensive critical and commercial success. Andrew Lytle's The Velvet Horn and James Agee's A Death in the Family were both nominated for the National Book Award, and Agee's novel won the Pulitzer Prize; both were bestsellers. Although McDowell would leave the firm in 1960, during the three years of his collaboration with Obolensky, he published several other notable titles to great critical acclaim. Yet, today McDowell is a nearly forgotten figure in American publishing. In spite of the remarkable success of his tenure as editor-in-chief, his contribution to American letters is commemorated only by a short entry on the firm in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, James Laughlin's comments on him in Remembering Williams Carlos Williams, one interview about his connection to Agee, and the scattered obituaries which appeared at his death in 1985. This article attempts to augment the scant record of McDowell's career, beginning with a biographical sketch of McDowell and then moving into an examination of his correspondence with author Andrew Lytle from his papers on deposit at Vanderbilt University. While McDowell appears to have had troubled relationships with other publishers, what emerges from the lengthy McDowell-Lytle correspondence is the portrait of an exemplary relationship between editor and author—and a record of McDowell's commitment to the written word. Matthew Guinn recently completed his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. His dissertation, focusing on southern literature, examines the discontinuities between contemporary fiction and the literature of the Southern Renaissance.     

Transformative Spaces: Dr. S. Paramasivan and Conservation Science in India in the Early Twentieth Century

The tenure of archaeological chemist Dr. S. Paramasivan (1903–1987) at the Chemical Conservation Laboratory of the Madras Government Museum, India, sheds light on the development of the field of conservation science outside the scholarly centers of Europe and North America. Between 1930 and 1946, Paramasivan defined and broadened the role of a scientist responsible for the care and study of cultural heritage. From building and equipping his own laboratories to serve the museum's many departments, to collaborating with scientists, commercial metallurgists, and even religious practitioners across south India, Paramasivan's work is marked by a sense that the conservation scientist could and should practice beyond a laboratory's typical confines. In fact, working in this way created opportunities not only to physically transform ancient objects through conservation interventions, but also transform the understanding of ancient objects. In tracing his correspondence with Rutherford J. Gettens at the Fogg Art Museum, this paper provides insight into the complexity of defining the work of the conservation scientist even at one of the intellectual centers of the nascent field. Reflecting on Paramasivan's early career provides perspective on enduring challenges in conservation, and offers a way forward for a more expansive, collaborative, and community-engaged practice.     

Assessing Text-Picture Correspondence in Television News: The Development of a New Coding Scheme

A new coding scheme and method of analysis were proposed to assess the level of text-picture correspondence in television news. The method focuses on alternating text-picture correspondences within news items and uses the proportional time devoted to each correspondence category as the dependent variable. It is argued that the coding method could be used in large-scale analyses of television news content as well as in effect studies that examine recall for news information.     

A formal relation between the h-index of a set of articles and their I3 score

“Once an Eagle,always an Eagle?”: symbolic divestment,recuperative critique,and in-house protests against the anti-gay BSA

A group of Eagle Scouts protested the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) anti-gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and queer policies and heteronormative citizenship ideals by forfeiting their badges, divesting their membership, and writing personal, emotionally charged letters addressed to the BSA to critique the institution from within. Engaging the correspondence illuminates the repertoires of critique and dissent they employ in their in-house protests. To these ends, this essay makes four primary contributions: it (re)calls attention to the correspondence archive as a fruitful site to investigate political speech acts and forms of dissent; it provides an understanding of the politics of emotions in protest and social change efforts, thus contributing to resonant dialogues in social movement studies; it codifies the Eagle Scouts’ particular tactics employed in their in-house protests, captured in the terms “symbolic divestment” and “recuperative critique”; and it offers a case study that details the rhetorical mechanisms of intrainstitutional change.

A comparison of Scopus and WoS database subject classifiers in mathematical disciplines

This paper presents a method for comparing the subject headings of Scopus and WoS classifiers that has been tested based on examples in the field of mathematical disciplines. Semantic relationships of subject headings are explored by using intelligent analysis of keyword and expression clustering. The results are presented in the form of a correspondence table for the subject headings of the classifiers.
