Information-seeking behavior of design, process, and manufacturing engineers

This article discusses the information sources used by design, process, and manufacturing engineers in an international microchip manufacturing company, and the characteristics that influence their information source selection and use. Findings differ from previous research in three ways. First, there was a significant difference in these engineers' information behavior. Second, the higher the engineers' level of education, the less likely they were to depend on their personal memories as sources of information, and the more likely they were to rely on libraries. Third, the higher the level of engineers' education, the less likely they were to consider “personal mastery” (information tool mastery) as a source influencer.     

高校图书馆留学生信息素养教育现状与思考

[目的/意义] 调研国内高校图书馆留学生信息素养教育实践进展,提出可行性发展对策,为我国高校图书馆开展支撑学校"双一流"战略与国际化建设的留学生信息素养教育提供参考。[方法/过程] 面向我国东西南北中5个地区的91所开展留学生教育的高校,对其下属图书馆的104名馆员和上海交通大学的20名留学生开展问卷调查,并通过调查结果分析我国高校图书馆留学生信息素养教育存在的优势、不足和应对策略。[结果/结论] 中国半数以上高校图书馆开展了留学生信息素养教育,相关教学实践呈现出授课人员与师资多样化、教学类型与内容多维化、教学方法与语言多元化等特点,存在对留学生信息素养培育的重视程度不足、教学实践有待加强、授课人员队伍严重缺乏、教学效果尚需提升等问题,可通过加强留学生信息素养教育规划设计、夯实师资队伍建设、注重馆员教学能力提升、加强新型教学方法运用等对策来改善。     

How They Search,How They Feel,and How to Serve Them? Information Needs and Seeking Behaviors of Chinese Students Using Academic Libraries

ABSTRACT

America has become a choice for international students to study abroad because of its advanced education system and environment. Libraries become a way for international students to access resources and experience campus life, while Chinese students are increasing gradually as the biggest component of international students. This article investigates how Chinese students use American academic libraries and their information needs and seeking behaviors, as well as Chinese students' satisfaction with library facilities, resources, and services, and their expectation for other services. The article aims to better understand Chinese students, analyze their search strategies, and better provide relevant library services for them.     

图书馆服务的一体两面:公众信息素养教育与虚假信息治理

信息社会,虚假信息正在对社会发展与社区和谐产生破坏性的影响,公共图书馆对此应加强应对。文章通过回顾2020年国际图书馆界参与新冠肺炎疫情防控与虚假信息的治理过程,对虚假信息的本质与特征进行分析,对我国公共图书馆开展公众信息素养教育的相关政策、理论与实践进行比较研究,并从融入社区生活、构建教育共同体、探索合作机制、完善基础设施、提供嵌入式服务、培养批判意识与能力、打造可信赖的信息源、加强技能培训与信息服务、引导用户正确利用信息等九个方面提出应对策略。     

Recent advances of information literacy education for international students in Chinese academic libraries

The author of this paper investigates the recent advances of information literacy education for international students at academic libraries in China. The author carried out a questionnaire survey through the Questionnaire Star platform from April 2019 to July 2020 among 152 librarians from 117 university libraries in different parts of China, including 35 librarians from the universities which participate in the country's construction plan of world-class universities and world-class disciplines. Moreover, another questionnaire survey on library information literacy education for international students was conducted among 35 international students in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Through analysis and discussion of the survey results, the research studies the overall status and existing problems of information literacy education for international students in Chinese academic libraries, and offers suggestions for the improvement of international students' information literacy education in the future.     

International organizations documentation: Resources and services of the Library of Congress and other Washington based agencies

This article discusses the documentation of international, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), calling attention to the peculiarities of these materials and also their value for research. Acquisition, bibliographic control, and servicing of international publications are described, with particular emphasis given to the collections of the Library of Congress and other Washington based agencies. The importance of IGO documentation in microform is stressed along with the importance of education on international documentation. In connection with education of librarians, reference is made to the usefulness of professional associations and meetings and the desirability of cooperation between librarians who work with international documents and information personnel in the international organizations.

概述教育的国际化趋势;分析教育国际化将推动图书馆的国际化进程：教育国际化带来新的信息需求,并要求图书馆完善相关的国际化服务,如拓展馆藏资源,开设国内信息资源输出的国际接口和提供专门的留学信息服务;提出图书馆应从服务意识、服务对象、服务人员、服务内容和国际合作五方面实现国际化,为教育国际化的发展创造更好的信息服务平台。     

iSchool视野下加拿大图书情报学教育的分析与思索

介绍加拿大图书情报学教育的体系及特点，包括学院名称及其特色课程、学院教育的专业化、所开展的国际合作等内容；并以加拿大图书情报学教育为背景，探讨图书情报学教育中“信息”内容的拓展以及图书情报学教育应对的挑战。指出应采取培育自身特色，整合优势资源以及在图书馆学-图书情报学-信息科学／信息研究的广阔空间内寻找准确“定位”的对策。     

A ‘powerful,creative history’: the reticence of women architects to donate their professional records to archival repositories

The article reports the findings from research investigating the impact of international standards for records management. This is a significant issue for the recordkeeping community given the significant resourcing devoted to the development of international standards. Previous attempts to measure impact have met with little success, so this research approached the problem area from a new angle, namely the indirect influence of standards on practice via their use in education and training. Data was collected from a global survey of educators and trainers. Findings demonstrate that the standards are being used extensively at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as in vocational training. However, a number of barriers to use are identified. The research provides a strong foundation for further investigation of impact and use of the international standards.     

An examination of institutional policy on copyright and access to research resources in Uganda

Education and research are the cornerstones of Africa's socioeconomic and political development. Yet several barriers stand in the way of Africa's education and research institutions in realizing their full potential. This paper examines copyright as a barrier in the access and use of electronic resources in Africa's education and research contexts. This paper addresses this policy question by examining the extent to which the draft policy on research and intellectual property rights management of Makerere University advances access to resources and the open sharing of knowledge. Based on the critical analysis of Makerere's policy, this paper notes that openness should trump other institutional interests in the copyright system. The position taken in the paper is that institutional policies should advance open sharing of information and knowledge (internal or external to the institution). Short-term legal remedies are proposed based on various Creative Commons' licenses that are designed to advance openness within existing national copyright statutes. Long-term remedies suggested involve reforming national and international laws and instruments to advance openness including protecting existing provisions for education and research. Protection of education and research activities can be attained by not simply availing the existing exceptions and limitations but also precluding statutory exceptions and limitations from being overridden by contractual licenses. The proposed short and long-term remedies are expected to be addressed by institutional policies to facilitate in the access and use of e-resources (and other research and educational resources).

利用远程技术实现图书馆学情报学国际化学术教育

长期以来,图书馆学情报学的教育者们一直致力于探索国际的学术交流和教育合作,以此提高教学课程和专业实践的质量。但目前仍存在很多阻碍,限制了传统的国际化教育的规模和发展,尤其是在发展中国家。该文介绍一个使用现有远程教育技术,在中国与美国之间建立一个面向研究生的知识管理课程的案例。该示范项目由美国富布莱特基金资助,综合利用学习技术、基于互联网的WebCT系统、视频会议、个人间的交流和阅读等多种手段,创建了一个国际化的虚拟学习空间。该文描述了师生们如何实现三个课程目标:(1)采用国际化的学习方式进行教学和学习;(2)双向交流;(3)知识管理。通过研究和实践得出如下结论:使用主动学习教学方法可以促使学生更加投入到学习过程;应用多种技术实现国际化交流;最大化地利用异步交流和同步交流两种方式,鼓励个人和小组学习;关注于更宽泛的多学科内容,促使更多人参与到国际学习环境中。     

“Glocal” patterns of communication-information convergences in Internet use: Cross-cultural behavior of international teaching assistants in a culturally alien information environment

There is minimal research on the cross-cultural needs, priorities, and behaviors of international participants immersed in contemporary culturally alien information environments. Through a quantitative analysis of Internet use patterns of international teaching assistants (ITA) studying in graduate school at a representative university in the United States, the authors discover communication-information convergences in ITAs’ use of the Internet as a “glocal” network, connecting the “global” and “local” dimensions in their everyday lives. The paper identifies dual functions of the Internet considered meaningful to the ITAs in the diaspora, namely: (1) to engage in various communication activities with friends and family in their home countries (the “global”), thereby providing psychological comfort and overcoming social isolation; and (2) to conduct information gathering activities that establish coping mechanisms for ITAs in their new homes in the United States (the “local”). The paper presents empirical data highlighting correlations between communication and information intersections in ITAs’ use of the Internet. Findings extend past Internet research and user studies in traditional communication and information research, which only alluded to these communication-information convergence processes, to better understand how international people use the Internet in present-day cross-cultural contexts of interaction.     

简论大学生电子资源利用能力培养的若干问题

在信息时代,培养大学生电子资源利用能力,既是促使其“成才”的需要,也是帮助其健康“成长”的需要。在素质教育中,信息素质教育是基础,根据这一教育的目标,大学生的电子资源利用能力培养,应把它作为专业能力和基本能力的“双重”定位。在当下高校的教育实践中,对这一能力的培养应采取整合性策略。     

木铎金声,滋兰树蕙——靖继鹏先生情报学教育学术思想研究

[目的/意义] 对靖继鹏先生情报学教育思想进行系统梳理和思考,以期赓续与弘扬我国情报学教育理论,为新时期我国情报学教育思想的创新和发展提供借鉴。[方法/过程] 运用网络调查、文献收集和人物访谈的研究方法,对先生的情报学教育思想进行系统梳理和回顾,理清先生情报学教育思想的形成与发展过程,展现先生情报学教育思想的内容体系,并在此基础上思考先生的情报学教育思想对我国未来情报学教学的启示。[结果/结论] 先生的情报学教育思想内容体系包括基于中国情境的多层次教育体系、情报专业的模块化课程体系和迎合社会需要的多目标培养体系。同时,用国际化视野构建情报学多元人才培养模式,基于社会需求不断推动情报学课程改革创新,深化情报工程专业方向中的多学科融合教育是靖继鹏先生情报学教育所带来的学术思想启示。     

国际经济信息需求与供给分析研究

论述国际经济信息需求和供给的意义、含义、特征、发展现状、影响国际经济信息需求和供给的因素及其相互影响,并在此基础上分析当前国际经济信息供需差距,探讨如何缩小信息供需间的差距和提高信息的有效供给,进而提出满足国际经济信息需求的对策和建议。     

iSchools国际交流与合作及其启示

选取32个英语语系的iSchools联盟院系,从师生队伍的国际化水平、人员的国际交流、参与及发起的国际学术会议、国际合作研究4个方面开展比较详细的现状调查。在调研基础上,总结国外iSchools在国际交流与合作中的发展趋势与成功经验,对我国LIS教育的国际交流与合作提出若干建议。
