Parental involvement is a key predictor of a student's academic success. However, little research has explored whether parent, student, and teacher perceptions are similar regarding what constitutes parental involvement and the communication activities it entails. The present study examines parent, student, and teacher perceptions of parental involvement and communication. While agreement exists on the importance of monitoring a child's academic performance and constructive teacher-parent communication, disagreement on the role of discipline and the use of extracurricular programs exist. Two discourses surrounding parental involvement are articulated--information transmission and partnership--and the implications of these discourses for developing parental involvement interventions are examined. 相似文献

The study sought to (1) investigate whether international students differ from domestic students in their information needs and barriers encountered, and (2) test the relative importance of students' domestic/international status against their gender and level of study. A survey was used to collect data from international and domestic undergraduate and graduate students in a US public university. The study collected 1259 responses. Regression analysis was used for analyzing the data. International and domestic students were found to be similar in their top-ranked needs (e.g., career information) and barriers (e.g., irrelevant and non-credible information). Compared to their gender and level of study, students' domestic/international status resulted in fewer significant differences in their needs and barriers. However, for the areas where domestic/international status was significant, its effect size was often prominent. Differences between domestic and international students are more notable in the barriers than in the information needs. Based on the findings, six propositions were developed. The implications for research and practice are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A long and divisive debate ensued on the ILL-L list-server concerning the requirement that some institutions place on the management of interlibrary loan: specifically that the manager of ILL be a librarian holding a Master's Degree in Library Science. This article attempts to show, using published studies and references, why this requirement may be outmoded in the modern academic library. While it is expected that the debate will not be settled or even dampened by this publication, it is hoped that some of the evidence presented may at least cause some to consider the issue in terms that are not absolute. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This study investigated the post-master's educational needs and interests of information professionals. The population for the study consisted of members of the library associations of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada. About 78 percent of the respondents held a master's degree in library science, 22 percent a master's degree in another discipline, almost 1 percent was enrolled in a doctoral program, 1 percent possessed a doctorate, and 16 percent had some other degree. Given the choice of an LIS only doctoral program or one combined with the field of business administration or computer science, the participants expressed a slight preference for the LIS only program. Of the other fields suggested by participants, education and public administration were the most popular. Participants also expressed a strong preference for non-traditional modes of instruction. 相似文献

ABSTRACT At the University of Connecticut, Learning Commons were created at each of the five regional campuses as was reported in the Journal of Library Administration (Dryden & Roseman, 2010). This article will discuss the further evolution of the commons at each campus, based on a variety of assessment methods that were undertaken. These included technology surveys, online space assessment surveys, focus groups, marketing surveys, and virtual focus groups. Abstract The Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) Library, established in 1990 to support instructional teaching and research, continued to support the academic programs in the Institute while initiating and developing its Outreach Program in 1998. This program provides library and information services to Illinois fire departments and firefighters throughout the state. Since establishing the Outreach Program, the IFSI Library has accumulated more than 7,000 entries in a “Reference Request Database.” This paper reports and analyzes the data, including request methods, delivery methods, types of requests, and types of resources. Trends indicate a change over time in request and delivery methods. Different regions of the state and different user groups have begun to use the library. The research can serve as a model for designing, developing and evaluating outreach reference service in a special or small library dedicated to meeting the information needs of remote library users. 相似文献

The information needs of minority women have received little attention. Fluency with the English language is a predictor of successful assimilation into mainstream American society. All ethnic groups share the need for unbiased educational materials, positive career role models for girls and young women, and enlightened career counseling. Lack of support from the publishing industry restricts the availability of writings by minority women. A wide variety of research opportunities exist in the field of ethnic women's studies due to past neglect. Consider information retrieval systems that respond to a query (a natural language statement of a topic, an information need) with an ordered list of 1000 documents from the document collection. From the responses to queries that all express the same topic, one can discern how the words associated with a topic result in particular system behavior. From what is discerned from different topics, one can hypothesize abstract topic factors that influence system performance. An example of such a factor is the specificity of the topic's primary key word. This paper shows that statements about the effect of abstract topic factors on system performance can be supported empirically. A combination of statistical methods is applied to system responses from NIST's Text REtrieval Conference. We analyze each topic using a measure of irrelevant-document exclusion computed for each response and a measure of dissimilarity between relevant-document return orders computed for each pair of responses. We formulate topic factors through graphical comparison of measurements for different topics. Finally, we propose for each topic a four-dimensional summarization that we use to select topic comparisons likely to depict topic factors clearly. 相似文献

This article reports on a study of the awareness, perceptions and use of e-books by academic staff in Further Education (FE) colleges throughout Northern Ireland (NI). It is the first comprehensive study of e-book use by FE faculty in NI and fills a significant gap in the research literature on e-books in education, which has tended to focus on Higher Education and the university setting. Data was collected through an online survey which was distributed to FE faculty across NI. The findings show that although FE academic staff are receptive to e-books and welcome them as a resource, poor reading experience and lack of awareness of relevant titles have had an impact. In particular, the research found that 40% of academic staff, in post less than five years, had not used e-books. Greater availability of titles, promotion, and better integration within teaching and learning emerge as key requisites for effective service delivery and enhancement of e-books within FE, as does the need for better targeted instruction and training aimed at academic staff. Understanding patrons' views, awareness, needs, habits and expectations in relation to e-books is crucial to help direct collection content while budgets remain tight and physical space limited. 相似文献
