Serial selection and deselection decisions: the view from America

Based on the author’s experience of many library visits in the United States and Canada, the article reviews the processes and criteria that characterize selection and deselection of serials in North America, and makes recommendations to publishers regarding promotion.

Dealing with Serial Title Changes:

This paper proposes a way to program the online catalog to retrieve and display together related serial records, by using the current accepted practice of successive entry cataloging and those MARC bibliographic fields unique to a successive entry record. The underlying theme to the discussion is that the cataloging record alone need not always bear the burden of explaining itself to the user; in fact, the online catalog with its menu options and displays can and should provide a useful structure within itself, a structure essential to the effective use of any library catalog.     

"The policy exists but you can't really use it": communication and the structuration of work-family policies

Although work-family benefits are increasingly important organizational policies, limited research addresses the impact of communication on benefit utilization. However, communication is significant because the perceived appropriateness of work-family benefits emerges through interaction. For example, when coworkers complain about "picking up the slack" for those using family leave, their discourse may impact future decisions of other workers regarding whether they utilize the work-family benefits available to them. We apply Giddens' (1984) Structuration Theory to examine organizational members' discursive responses to conditions (and contradictions) present in utilizing work-family benefits in a governmental organization. We argue the daily discursive practices of individuals can either reinforce or undermine formally stated work-family initiatives, and in turn discuss the implications of this "structuration" of policy.     

Editorial decision making: Risk and reward

The most critical decisions—whether or not to invest in a publishing project—are made with inadequate analytical infrastructure. Much time is consumed in obtaining the view of generalists within the company in second-guessing the decisions of those who really know the market—the editor and the author. Decisions are made on the basis of “title P&Ls” when individual titles do not make a profit or a loss—only businesses do. Little attempt is made to assess relative risk and the most crucial element for most businesses, cash, is hardly considered. Information Needs of Minority Women and Serial Resources:

The information needs of minority women have received little attention. Fluency with the English language is a predictor of successful assimilation into mainstream American society. All ethnic groups share the need for unbiased educational materials, positive career role models for girls and young women, and enlightened career counseling. Lack of support from the publishing industry restricts the availability of writings by minority women. A wide variety of research opportunities exist in the field of ethnic women's studies due to past neglect. Academic, public, and school media libraries need to reexamine their role in the educational process of minority girls and women to help reverse trends of underemployment and cultural deprivation.     

The annual reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs: Revisiting the key to the United States Congressional Serial Set, 1824–1920

The Annual Reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, for the years 1824 through 1920, described the interactions between the American Indian tribes and the federal government. J. A. Provided a key to these documents found in the United States Congressional Serial Set, but this tool contained a number of errors. This article provides a fresh look at this key, with particular focus upon the availability of these materials through the Readex Serial Set digital collection.
