Accounts in selection interviews

This essay addresses consequences of providing accounts (explanations of conduct) in selection interviews. Previous research has suggested that using accounts in interviews might be detrimental to applicants, since providing accounts may be one of many indices of a powerless style of communication. On the other hand, in ordinary discourse, accounts have positive, beneficial uses: They explain away apparent improprieties, and restore favorable impressions of an actor's character. In this essay, questions about the negative consequences of account use are examined, an explanation of the relative frequencies of accounts by applicants and interviewers is developed, and a subset of selection interviews is conceptualized as a type of “hazardous” communication event. It is argued that accounts given in selection interviews are not necessarily powerless speech forms, and ways of usefully accounting in the context of interview hazards are summarized. Overall, while it is acknowledged that excessive account use might damage applications, it is argued that accounts can assist applications by explaining away questionable aspects of a candidate's history and prospects, within what is quite often a challenging, “hazardous” communication event.

Rehabilitation literature: a guide to selection materials

The rehabilitation of physically disabled persons is an expanding and interdisciplinary field, and the literature on this topic has grown rapidly in recent years. Bibliographic control of rehabilitation literature is poor, and selection of materials about physically disabled persons can be a difficult undertaking. The present article describes and evaluates various selection tools on the basis of their coverage of rehabilitation literature and their usefulness to academic, public, and special librarians.     

Dogmatism of the speaker and selection of evidence

Previous research on the use of relational maintenance strategies in marriage was replicated and extended by examining diary logs of 103 married couples kept over a two‐week period. Gender differences within the marital dyads were examined. Additionally, the effect of relational satisfaction or comparison level was explored, in terms of an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use. The results showed significant differences between husbands and wives for openness, network, and especially tasks strategies. Wives invariably used more of each type of relational maintenance strategy than their husbands. No effects of relational satisfaction emerged, which suggested that an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use may be inappropriate. An ad hoc assessment of the effect of length of marriage on strategy use was significant and indicated a general decline in the use of all types of strategies as years married increased.

Evaluating Third World national bibliographies as selection resources

Theoretically, national bibliographies are regarded as important library resources for a variety of reasons. Internationally accepted standards suggest that such compilations are valued for their currency, comprehensiveness and accuracy; all of these attributes indicate that national bibliographies should be particularly useful in the selection process. However, the reality of their content, especially from Third World countries where bibliographic control generally operates under severe constraints, shows that they are less adequate than expected. This may be in part because we apply unrealistic and unnecessarily complex criteria to their evaluation. If these are simplified and tailored to Third World realities, do national bibliographies fare any better? On the whole they rate below average even according to special criteria and at best are marginally acceptable as selection resources—although some exceptions are apparent.     

Two-stage statistical language models for text database selection

As the number and diversity of distributed Web databases on the Internet exponentially increase, it is difficult for user to know which databases are appropriate to search. Given database language models that describe the content of each database, database selection services can provide assistance in locating databases relevant to the information needs of users. In this paper, we propose a database selection approach based on statistical language modeling. The basic idea behind the approach is that, for databases that are categorized into a topic hierarchy, individual language models are estimated at different search stages, and then the databases are ranked by the similarity to the query according to the estimated language model. Two-stage smoothed language models are presented to circumvent inaccuracy due to word sparseness. Experimental results demonstrate that such a language modeling approach is competitive with current state-of-the-art database selection approaches.     

Book selection and bookfund management at Imperial College Libraries

Book selection has been a rather neglected area of professional concern in recent years. This paper examines the experiences of the Imperial College (IC) Libraries, where there has been a review and reorganisation of book selection practices. The new system harnesses the subject expertise of both Departmental and Central Library staff. This article describes current selection practices at IC, highlighting the differences in approach to the selection of listed textbooks as compared to other monographs. There is also a consideration of the role of users in the selection process and of the use of current awareness tools. The increasing influence of electronic services is discussed.
