Agents — the future of exclusivity

The Japanese market is changing and the sole agency route to marketing must develop and evolve alongside these changes if it is to have a future. Sole agency agreements need to redirect their focus away from merely closed market distribution agreements towards innovative sales and marketing contracts. Contracts between partners with shared objectives. The trend towards sales and marketing agreements was evident at the ALPSP Seminar on Marketing to Japan, held on 8 October 1997, from which this paper developed.     

Environmental paper buying — best practice

In this article the environmental and commercial issues, which are an integral part of the need for, and practice of, recycling paper, are explored and explained. Although of particular interest to publishers, paper buyers and printers this is a subject that no one can afford to ignore.     

Copyright and licensing — the changing scene

A rapid survey of the key current issues and changes in the copyright and licensing environment. Briefly discusses the reasons why there is so much change, and in particular the changing attitudes of both authors and customers towards publishers. Surveys the new contractual problems confronting publishers; the requirements for doing business electronically in future; major legal changes; and developments in licensing. Concludes by considering how publishers can influence what happens.     

The Big Deal — ten years on

This paper describes the highlights of an exploratory deep log analysis of journal usage on OhioLINK, conducted as part of the MaxData project. OhioLINK, the original ‘Big Deal’, provides a single digital platform of nearly 6,000 full‐text journals for more than 600,000 people in Ohio and the investigation aimed to assess it after approximately 10 years. The data was generated from an SPSS analysis of the raw (unprocessed) server logs for June 2004 to December 2004. Approximately 1,215,000 items were viewed on campus in October 2004 and 1,894,000 items viewed off campus between June and December 2004. There are a number of usage analyses including: demand and activity; number and name of journal; date of publication; subject/discipline of journal and method of searching/navigating.     

Creative Commons — the other way?

On 9 Mar 2006, the District Court of Amsterdam upheld the Creative Commons (CC) licence in relation to photographs made available for the public on an online sharing website, but subject to a Creative Commons licence. This is the first known court decision involving a Creative Common licence, not only in the European Union, but worldwide, that has held that CC licences are valid and enforceable. This paper gives a critical analysis of the reasons for the popularity of Creative Commons licences and of the basic structure of the Creative Commons licensing regime in England and Wales.     

Open access — the impact of legislative developments

An account is given of the development of the idea of open access for the results of STM research over the period 1999–2005 with particular attention to PubMed Central and to the initiatives of the legislatures in the US and UK in 2004. Stakeholder responses to open access are briefly reviewed and possible future developments are outlined.

钱存训先生是世界著名的中国书籍史专家、图书馆学家,同国家图书馆有着深厚的渊源和不解的情缘。抗战期间,在日军占领下的上海,钱先生倾力主持国立北平图书馆上海办事处的工作,并冒着生命危险,将国家图书馆存沪图书中最珍贵的3万余册善本书籍秘密运送美国国会图书馆寄存,使国宝免遭兵燹之灾。半个多世纪以来,这批国宝辗转流离的命运一直牵挂着钱先生的心怀,为使其早日完璧归赵,钱先生始终不遗余力地多方周旋。2009年,这位国家图书馆的同龄人,将和国家图书馆共迎百年华诞。
