English plays a very important role in our daily life and has been a world language for decades, as the global economy is developing so fast nowadays, the learners of English have already realized that the main purpose to learn English is to communicate properly in their real life with the people from other culture, but not to memorize those boring grammar rules and terrible vocabularies which will appear in their English examinations. Consequently, it has become an important task for English teachers to think about how to develop students’ language abilities for real communication. Nowadays, Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) has become a very popular teaching approach in China. CLT pays a lot attention to the social and functional elements in language daily use.

A Study on Incorporating Cultural Background into High School English Teaching

Language is a social communication tool, and has the inseparable relationship with the social culture. In rcent years, with the acceleration of reform and opening up, foreign exchanges become more frequent, and cross-cultural communication in every nation become the indispensable part of life. But cultural differences are cross-cultural communication barriers, which has become a common problem facing the world. Therefore, culture plays a very important role in English teaching, which is widely acknowledged by English teaching circle. In view of the above problems, this paper discusses how to present cultural background information and expose learners to it in the need of English teaching at Chinese High school so as to help learners grasp the crux of the language and develop their ability to communicate in English.

While to what is culture in nature, pepole have different perspectives.Compared with the conception of society, the nature of culture is illustrated in the paper, and it is furthered to analyze how to define the scope and object of the cultural study.     

Accessibility in post secondary education： Application of UDL to college curriculum

The inclusion of students with disabilities at the university is a relatively new occurrence in the field of special education. Although legislation in the United States has supported the acceptance of students with disabilities at the post-secondary level, it has only provided minimal support with the emphasis on the learner rather than the curriculum. Now we are looking for multiple ways for students to access learning and demonstrate mastery. Universal Design for Learning （UDL） is currently seen as a means to reconceptionalize curriculum. This study examines the experience of four professors and their effort to use a Classroom Performance System （CPS） as part of reformatting their courses using UDL. The Center for Applied Special Technology, CAST （2001） states that the goal of Universal Design for Learning is to develop teaching methods that enable all students with diverse learning needs, including those with disabilities and cultural differences, to have equal access to classroom curriculum. This paradigm shift echoes the move in special education from a deficit model to a minority rights model put forward by Hahn （1989）, and which is the basis of inclusive educational philosophy. Together inclusion and UDL create learning environments that strive to serve all students. This research describes the implementation of clickers as part of the CPS program in college courses in a special education teacher preparation program. The case study demonstrates how technology can provide access for all learners with positive outcomes such as increased participation and application of knowledge. It also illustrates some of the difficulties in making this pedagogical paradigm shift particularly in the use of technology, and the value of overcoming the existing barriers in place.

Coming from a country with a population of only 23 million, to a city of more than eight million people has been a stimulating and re-warding challenge for me. Since landing in Wuhan, the warm and welcoming feeling is overwhelming, making me feel so welcome. The shopping, sights and attractions are abundant in their numbers, while the hustle and bustle of traffic has left me in awe.     

A Brief Study of the Potential Problems in Cross-cultural Business Negotiations and Recommendations for Chinese Negotiators

Globalization has become a hot topic in the world economy realm.As international trade booms worldwide,especially in China,it requires negotiators despite their genders,regions,ethics or ages to sit together around the table and achieve their goals.Various problems do occur in this process.This paper is going to study the potential problems in cross-culture business ne gotiations and put forward some workable suggestions and recommendations for Chinese negotiators with the view to clearing the situation up.     

Special education in Turkey

The quality and the prevalence of education are the major indicators of the development of a society. It is a kind of human right to every person living in the society to be educated in a sufficient way. The education of the disabled people, a social reality in Turkey, is not sufficiently carried out. This paper aims at the education of the disabled people in Turkey. In order to mention about the education of the disabled people, this paper also mentions about the general characteristics of the disabled. The service of special education has not reached all the disabled, and the disabled and their families are not aware of the importance of the education. Only 90 thousand out of over one million disabled children receive the education. Disabled children continue their training in five groups： the sight impaired, the hearing impaired, the orthopedic impaired, the mentally impaired and children with long-term illness. Raising awareness is very important for all of the Turkish people. So a social education is necessary in order to deal with this problem.     

English Language Assistance Needs of Chinese Students

It is known that the IELTS test has not been a good predictor of English capability in academic settings. More information is required. Are students not motivated to keep improving their English; what obstacles do they face? The English language issues facing international students from China at one University are explored through a survey and focus groups. It is observed that a lack of motivation is not the key factor. Rather one core problem is the very difficult demands of acculturation within a short time frame which would enable confidence for the students to continue to engage with other English speaking students. When faced with such immediate and hard to achieve acculturation, many retreat to their language groups. In the academic context, support for the transition to discipline based academic genres is double difficult as the time frame for second language learners is longer, but performance requirements are more immediate. Many first language students also have difficulties in this area, but have the easier language path to mastery. The study draws usefully on a comparison made with students studying English in China.     

How to Use Newspaper or Magazine Articles to Teach English Language Skills

With the development of the society, especially with China‘s entry into WTO,English is badly needed in various fields. English learning has been a fashion not only in college, but also in the society. However. how to let the students learn English in an efficient and interesting way is still a hard nut to those teachers. At present, the knowledge in the textbooks is so limited and impractical, trying to use other materials maybe a useful way to solve this problem to some extent. With my ten-years teaching experiences in college, I‘ve found that using English newspaper or magazine articles to teach English language skills is a very good way, for their uses of language is very up-to-date and attractive. Impersonation: A Practical Solution for Jewish Narrative Dilemma——On Philip Roth's Novella The Ghost Writer

Philip Roth employs a twining narrative method in The Ghost Writer for the purpose of seeking a possible outlet for the narrative dilemma of Jewish writing.While embedding several story lines into one major plot, the author finally finds a way to express himself in his "Lonovian—as—Zuckermanian" tale via the "Zuckerman—as—Amy—as—Anne Frank" impersonation, which is the key for the interpretation of this novella.

Predicting film learning by pre-release testing

Conclusions It is concluded that, for subject matter of the nature tested and with the kind of film treatment given to “Flight Capabilities of the F86A,” a preproduction filmstrip based on the story-board for the film was capable of predicting the relative effectiveness of the final motion picture. Although on the average the motion-picture group showed higher scores for the test items used after the film showing than did the filmstrip group, the important result is that the itemby-item results were well enough correlated to yield a useful prediction of the differential effectiveness of the film in conveying different specific points of information. However, it should be emphasized that the film used in the study cannot be demonstrated to be representative of a defined universe of films, either in content or technique of presentation; thus the generality of the findings remains as a problem, for further investigation. In order to permit useful generalization, the experiment should be replicated with a number of other, different kinds of films, and other kinds of film audiences. For the educational film producer, the prediction (prior to its production) of how well a film will fulfill its teaching objectives is an important consideration. John V. Zuckerman presents, one solution to the problem—the pre-testing of the film by means of an inexpensive filmstrip of the story-board treatment. Research Productivity and Student Evaluation of Teaching in Social Science Classes: A Research Note

Research on the relationship between research productivity and student evaluations of teaching (SETs) has been marked by several shortcomings. First, research typically fails to check and adjust for nonlinear distributions in research productivity. Since approximately 15% of researchers account for most articles and citations (e.g., Zuckerman, H., Handbook of Sociology, Sage Publications, Newbury Park, CA, pp. 511–574, 1988), this failure might explain weak or nonsignificant findings in some of the past research. Second, the unit of analysis is typically the instructor, not the class. Since top researchers might disproportionately teach small classes at the graduate level, and that SETs are usually higher in such classes, the small relationships between research excellence and SETS found in previous research may be spurious. The present study corrects for each of these issues. It analyzes data from 167 classes in the social sciences and on 65 faculty. The quality of research productivity (raw citations/post-PhD year) is not related to SETs. However, when the distribution of citations is corrected for skewness, a significant positive relationship between research productivity and SETs emerges. This relationship survives controls for course and instructor characteristics, and holds for both the faculty member and the class as units of analysis. This is the first systematic investigation to demonstrate a significant relationship between the quality of research (citations) and SETs.     

The effect of concept mapping on students' anxiety and achievement in biology

The results of recent studies into the use of the concept mapping heuristic seem to demonstrate that meaningful learning results through its use in science classrooms. While this underscores the need to use more effective instructional strategies in science teaching, the issue of the intervening variable of anxiety in learning and science achievement, and the possible use of a metacognitive strategy in anxiety reduction have not been addressed. This study, therefore, sought to find out if the metacognitive strategy of concept mapping reduces anxiety and thereby enhances achievement in biology. A total of 51 (30 boys, 21 girls) senior secondary one (grade 10) students participated in this experiment. Two instruments—the Zuckerman Affect Adjective Checklist and the Biology Achievement Test—were used in pre- and posttest administrations to measure the treatment effect on anxiety and achievement, respectively. Findings support the stand that concept mapping is significantly more effective than the traditional/expository teaching strategy in enhancing learning in biology. In addition, it apparently reduces students' anxiety towards the learning of biology. A significant reduction of anxiety was noticed for male subjects.

Coping with the point of entry problem in evaluating projects

In this article the so-called point of entry problem in evaluation work has been discussed. A summary of how this problem has been treated in the theoretical literature of evaluation has been presented. Some illustrations of the problem have been given, and it has been considered from both client and evaluator perspectives. A general rule calling for studies that assist in improving client services has been offered. And a chart for determining, in accordance with this rule, when to do what type of study has been introduced.It is hoped that the advice will assist evaluators and their clients to do a better job of planning evaluations. In addition, it is hoped that other students of the evaluation field will examine and possibly build on the work begun here. Both further conceptual analysis and empirical study are needed. In addition, the field could use some good workshops aimed at helping evaluators and their clients to better appreciate and deal with their evaluation point of entry problem.
