Petri nets

Petri nets offer a versatile modeling framework for complex, distributed, concurrent systems and have been used in a wide range of modeling applications. In Part 1 of this two-part article, we have seen important features and representational power of the Petri net model. We have also seen how the application of firing rules enables Petri nets to capture the dynamics or behavior of the modeled system. In this part, we will first understand how important system properties are modeled by Petri nets and then look into the applications of Petri net models.

Utilizing Student Socio-coordinated Mimicry: Complex Movement Conversations in Physical Education

This article explores Complexity Theory and applications of nonlinear dynamics in physical education (PE). The authors of this article discuss Complexity Theory and its applications to students and student learning. Additionally, there will be discussion of how the networking learning process associated with socio-coordinated mimicry creates a “movement conversation” between learners rooted in the relational complexity of students within a PE lesson. Finally, the authors discuss research opportunities within PE, allowing for a close collaboration between pedagogical researchers and biomechanists to examine the emergent qualities within the “movement conversations” between students. Overall, this article seeks to illustrate the possibilities of utilizing Complexity Theory within PE pedagogy and research.

A plan for the development of a conceptually based mathematics curriculum for disadvantaged children

In Part I (Scandura, 1972b), theoretical foundations were presented together with a plan for engineering an idealized curriculum and for developing specific curriculum products. The purpose of Part II is to show how this plan would operate in practice. In studying the applications, the reader will probably want to refer back to the plan in Part I. To keep the discussion within bounds, only Phase I of the long-range engineering is considered. The viability of the overall approach, however, will become clear with the present discussion.This article is based on a report prepared during September 1970 for the Office Economic Opportunity.

字符与分类

字符,这里是指汉字构形学上包容“声符”、“形符”、“记号”等的概念。各种类型的文字结构之间的对应,最大可能是基于字符的层次。字符区别意义的功能,在于整个文字结构类型。字符的确定,实际上意味着意义类型的划分。每个研究者首先遇到的是具体字符的分析和归类问题,特别是面对的处理对象是复杂的文字类型,最棘手的就是如何分析出相对完整的字符单位,也就是找到相应的归类。如果各自分类标准出入比较大,无论怎样千方百计分级分层的编码设计都过于“个性化”,也就很难说得上走向实际通用。

Any press is good press? The unanticipated effects of Title IX investigations on university outcomes

Since 2011, when the landmark “Dear Colleague” letter declared that the Department of Education (DoE) would use equal-access requirements of federal law to remediate sexual assault on college campuses, 458 investigations have been opened. This letter was withdrawn in 2017 and it remains uncertain how the DoE will handle the issue in the future. We examine the effects of the investigations arising from the 2011 policy change on university outcomes. We find that applications and enrollment increase in response to Title IX investigations, for both males and females. We find little evidence of effects on degree completion or donations.     

The Application of Cooperative Principle to Job Interview

Cooperative principle is supposed to be the basis of any successful communication.It is assumed that in a conversation the par ticipants will cooperate with each other when making their contributions.The principle has wide and useful applications.Based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle and the conversational implicature,the following discussion attempts to analyze pragmatically how it can be used in job interview.By means of applying principles of quantity,quality,relation and manner into the job interview,it can be shown that the interview can be successful in the interview if he observes the cooperative principle and derives the conversational implicature.     

Using Handheld Computers to Support Improved Classroom Assessment in Science: Results from a Field Trial

A variety of handheld applications and curricular materials have been developed to support inquiry science learning in recent years, but there are few handheld-supported assessment activities available to teachers. In Project WHIRL, researchers from SRI International worked in partnership with teachers from Beaufort County School District (SC) to develop a suite of handheld software applications that could be used to support classroom assessment in upper elementary and middle school science classrooms. In this paper, we will analyze results from a field trial conducted in 2003–2004 with 18 teachers in the district, focusing on how teachers’ enactment of handheld-supported assessment activities altered the frequency and quality of their assessment practices.This material is based in part on work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number REC-0126197. Managing uncertainty in the real world

In Part 1 of this article we understood the idea of a fuzzy set. We also reviewed simple operations such as fuzzy set intersection, union, and complementation, and related these to geometry. In Part 2, we extend the idea of fuzzy sets to explain how we may develop systems that reason with fuzzy sets using fuzzy logic. The idea of extending fuzzy logic to fuzzy engineering and fuzzy function approximation is explored with a working example. It is hoped that readers will be provided with enough motivation to appreciate the use of fuzzy set theory for real world applications.     

基于SNMP的MRTG流量监测系统应用

在日常网络管理维护的工作中,如何有效地监测网络流量而较小地干涉网络运行,是当前网络流量监测的热点。对SNMP网络管理模型及流量监测体系结构进行了介绍,利用MRTG建立了一个采用被动监测方式的流量监测系统。该系统可以实时地通过收集网络上路由器、交换机或者需要被监测设备上的状态数据直观地生成流量向量图,而对网络参数的测量基本上不会影响到网络的正常运行。列举了两个利用流量监测系统的应用实例。
