Feeding the Fledgling Repository: Starting an Institutional Repository at an Academic Health Sciences Library

In 2005, the Scott Memorial Library at Thomas Jefferson University started an institutional repository (IR), the Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC) <http://jdc.jefferson.edu/>. Originally intended as a showcase for faculty scholarship, it has evolved to serve also as a university press for original journals and newsletters, and as an institutional archive. Many lessons have been learned about marketing techniques, common IR issues, and advantages of an IR for a library. IR recruitment has come to be viewed as yet another form of collection development and has been integrated into all forms of the Library's outreach. Jefferson's academic health sciences environment has proven similar to other academic environments on issues of acceptance and participation.     

Batter Up: Classifying Pre-World War II Baseball Cards Using Dewey Decimal

Abstract

Within cataloging non-book items, literature on sports cards is limited and not rooted in academic research. Sports cards provide valuable statistical information and evidence of lineups. This article addresses the gap by examining Jefferson Burdick’s The American Card Catalog. Known as the Dewey Decimal system of trading cards, the Catalog is the preeminent resource for collecting pre-World War II cards. This article expands upon Burdick’s work and guides librarians through the building of a class number for individual sports cards. The result incorporates classification methods to support user search, and highlights the historical value of cards within library collections.     

The Origins of the Russian Collection at the Library of Congress (1800–1906)

This article traces the development of the Russian collection at the Library of Congress during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Library of Congress, which was intended to be a small legislative library, initially added books about Russia in English translation and on limited subjects. The purchase of the Jefferson library brought the first Russian-language books to the collection, but the Russian collection would not truly begin to grow until the 1866 Smithsonian Deposit and the development of international exchanges in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The author made heavy use of the many printed Library of Congress catalogs and supplements, as well as archival sources, in the course of this research.

Dismantling the Reference Collection

In 2008, the University of Louisville’s (UofL) Ekstrom Library printed reference collection numbered almost 30,000 volumes. Copious collecting and sparse weeding built up the collection during the era before the Internet. There had been considerable reluctance to address its more outdated sections due to competing priorities and inertia. A change of leadership as well as the recognition of changing use patterns had lessened the need for such a large collection. In 2011, three librarians began a title-by-title review process that resulted in an 86% reduction of the reference collection by 2014. This article describes that process, summarizes the results, and discusses the benefits and disadvantages of this approach.

Collection Management in British Children's Literature-A Report of Five Case Studies

In order to gain insight into the collection management of children's books by British public library services, five case studies were undertaken in 1989. These studies uncovered a diversity of procedures but no comprehensive provision of collection management policies. Reasons for compromising on the ideal were found to be related to inadequate staffing rather than to a lack of concern.     

Rethinking the Reference Collection: Exploring Benchmarks and E-Book Availability

Librarians in the Health Sciences Library System at the University of Pittsburgh explored the possibility of developing an electronic reference collection that would replace the print reference collection, thus providing access to these valuable materials to a widely dispersed user population. The librarians evaluated the print reference collection and standard collection development lists as potential benchmarks for the electronic collection, and they determined which books were available in electronic format. They decided that the low availability of electronic versions of titles in each benchmark group rendered the creation of an electronic reference collection using either benchmark impractical.     

Displaying Special Collections Online

This article explores ways of creating an online presence for Special Collections. Options available for institutions limited by budget are explored, progressing from the point of initially considering going digital, and then on through the steps of digitization to online platforms. This article centers more on practicalities of creating an online presence more than on arguments for why an institution should have one. Ultimately, the individual institution has to decide what is best for their collection and act from there.     

Moving or Leaving

Abstract

Difficult decisions about the collection had to be madeby the library staff planning the moveto thenew Walter C. Koerner Library at the University of British Columbia. Thislibrary wasto bethe center for servicesto Humanities and Social Sciencesusers, but could accommodate only 60% of the Humanitiesand Social Sciences collectionshoused in the old Main Library. The staff had to decide what parts of the collection to move and what to leave in the old building, against the day when the second phase of the Koerner Library should be built. This article describes howthese difficult choices were made, including the consultation process, the development of criteria to split the collection, and their implementa-tion.     

Evaluating Continuing Resources: Perspectives and Methods from Science Librarians

Five science librarians share their experiences with the evaluation of continuing resources at an academic university and discuss implications caused by the evaluation process. Four of the authors were new to collection evaluations at the time of the Serial Evaluation Project. These new librarians faced many challenges, both personally and professionally, in dealing with the cancellation process. Although the differences in approaches to collection analysis are discussed somewhat, they are not a focus of the article.

民间家书作为家庭档案的一个门类,既是一种社会记忆档案,又是社会记忆的重要载体,集中体现了普通民众的社会记忆。抢救性征集民间家书是档案界之外开展的一项家庭档案征集活动,其成果为建构普通民众的社会记忆增添了丰富的资源,同时通过展览、出版、数字化等手段,使社会记忆得到有效传承。     

Books to Bytes at the Speed of Light: A Rapid Health Sciences Collection Transformation

To meet the evolving demands of health care delivery, University of Utah Health Care is transforming at an unprecedented pace. The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library is supporting this transformation through strategic sharing of physical space and critical evaluation of the collection. Key partners have been invited to share library space. To accommodate these new partners, the library had to quickly eliminate most of its print collection. The de-accessioning of print materials afforded an opportunity to evaluate the way in which the library provides content to users and to explore creative alternatives that continue and enhance library services.

康有为藏书聚散考

在近代中国西学东渐的时代背景下,康有为受到家族藏书传统影响,同时接受西学知识,以家族藏书为基础,办学需要为动力,积累大量藏书,其中包括大量西学书籍,成为广东藏书界“粤省四家”之一。由于戊戌变法失败藏书被查抄,以及康有为个性不羁和晚年经济困窘,导致藏书管理不善、过世后家人因负债售卖藏书,最终导致康有为藏书散落广西、镇江等地。本文以相关史料和馆藏文献为基础,探寻康有为藏书的聚散过程,并结合时代背景和康有为个人特质分析其藏书聚散原因,为研究者提供参考。     

博士论文引文分析与信息资源建设－南开大学经济、管理学科部分重点学科博士论文引文分析

选取1987-2002年经济、管理学科部分博士论文引文作为分析对象,对不同年份、不同专业论文引文保障率的变化进行分析,并对馆藏保障和数据库保障的相互作用进行对比分析。认为信息资源的保障是长期积累的结果,须与学科发展同步;数据库、网络等对数字资源起到了明显的保障作用;提出图书馆信息资源建设和资源配置应多元化的建议。     

网络环境下高校图书馆的藏书建设

高校图书馆在网络环境下应从藏书规划，电子文献的入藏，虚拟馆藏，特色馆藏的建设等方面加强藏书建设。     

20世纪上半叶的云南地方文献工作

20世纪上半叶是云南地方文献工作承上启下的重要时期。体现在：系统收集了大量的云南地方文献，对重要的云南地方文献进行了整理、汇辑、出版，修纂了各种志书，对各种专门地方文献进行了专题揭示与研究。一方面，对民国以前的云南地方文献做了较为全面的清理和总结，另一方面，对民国时期的云南历史文献作了及时的整理与保存，留下了丰富的文献收藏和宝贵的原始资料。这一时期中，学者共同策划、组织、实施了多项云南地方文献整理工程，学术思想活跃，学科交融突出，在云南学术史上有着重要的研究价值。
