This research paper,from the perspective of cross-cultural communication,intends to analyze the cultural misconceptions Chinese have about North American culture.Inspired by the data the author collected through the semester-long project with three subjects from different background,the topic of helping Chinese people overcome stereotypes about American culture stands out to claim the practical value in terms of enhancing Chinese people’s cultural awareness and ability to distinguish cultural perspectives and recognize the complexity of cross-cultural communication.Also,recommendations like to know yourself,to develop cross-cultural communication competence are provided for overcoming the formation of stereotypes and to decrease possible cultural incidents since people of both cultures are increasingly interacting with each other in various aspects in the situation of globalization.  相似文献

Barry Levinson’s film Wag the Dog(1997) is concerned with the technological transformation of American culture in the postmodernism which is isomorphic with the media culture of American society in the late twentieth century. Language and culture are closely related with each other: language is the carrier and a fundamental part of culture, while culture has an intrinsic and indispensable impact on language and is also reflected in language. So if in the language learning and teaching, attention is only paid to the linguistic forms but the relationship between language and culture is ignored, then the learner’s linguistic ability will not be equivalent to his or her social and cultural communication competence. Especially in the times of globalization with increasing transna tional and cross-cultural communication, the knowledge of cultural background is the must prerequisite for not only the avoidance of cul tural "conflict" but the success of communication. Mistakes in interpretation are concerned with not merely poor language competence but also incapability of smooth crosscultural communication,which indicates that interpreters should be more competent in pragmatics consistent to the cultural models of relevance.The analysis demonstrates the importance of understanding cross-cultural pragmatics and some implications for teaching,particularly in the EFL environment.Project-based learning,conforming to the requirements of personnel training against the background of globalization,can well serve the goal of developing students’ overall cross-cultural communication competence in interpretation courses,when culture and its impacts on pragmatic competence of interpretation are not left out in both the in-class and after-class activities,but are dealt with in a sensitive and open-minded way.  相似文献

Economic globalization has brought China into closer contact with the rest of the world. Chinese food, as an important part of Chinese culture, attracts foreigners who come to China. But in a lot of cases, when they look at the menus, they feel stunned and baffled. For the English translations of Chinese menus are often incomprehensible and misleading. However, such awareness has not led to an in-depth study on menu translation. In this paper, the author draws on theories of foreignization and domestication, and recommends foreignization as a main strategy and domestication as a supplementary choice. In conjunction with it, the author suggests a set of techniques for menu translation. It is hoped that this will contribute to the preservation and development of Chinese cuisine culture as a whole.  相似文献

At present,with the development of the city culture and globalization,bilingual signs are more widely used in the society.Among the public sign translations,there are many successful examples.But,at the same time,many problems such as mistranslation and poor translation widely exist in the process of promotion of city culture.The relevance theory interprets translation from the original author’s and translator’s cognitive surroundings,thus bringing a new approach for translation,especially for applied text translation.Based on the previous study,the author analyzes the equivalent effect of sign translation from the perspective of the relevance theory and summarizes some principles and strategies for public sign translation,in hope of helping the promotion of the city image and culture.  相似文献

Different languages are unable to be separated from their specific social culture backgrounds. Vocabulary is language’s subsystem. English metaphor is an important part of vocabulary; it belongs to the semantic motivation of English lexicology. The social culture of a language reflects more from its linguistic metaphor. Metaphor is a significant language phenomenon that is closely linked with its culture. Much of the deep culture of a language (such as view of life, view of value, etc.) is instantiated and transmitted through the metaphors people use on the daily basis. English speaking has been paid more attention today, especially in the age of globalization. Teachers are attempting to find out more effective methods to enhance the teaching results of English speaking. Facing the great demands and present difficulties of oral English classes, teachers have to conduct more study and practice to find out what roles that an oral English teacher has to take in the oral English classroom. Compared with the traditional teaching role in the English classroom, an oral English teacher has to fulfill more than one role in the classroom teaching so as to provide better learning conditions for students. Lacking more exposure to the real interaction with native speakers, students expect the oral English teacher to be a creator of the language environment. With various teaching and learning activities in the oral English classroom, the teacher has to be a good organizer to ensure every student to achieve improvement. An oral English teacher also has to correct students’language errors while ensuring the smooth progress of the classroom teaching.
