The Use of Equivocal Messages in Responding to Corporate Challenges

A framework is constructed to examine communication professionals’ views regarding the use of equivocal and nonequivocal messages for managing initial statements about corporate challenges. As predicted, equivocal responses were viewed as more appropriate to use and linked to a positive corporate reputation when the crisis situation contained avoidance–avoidance goal conflicts, whereas nonequivocal responses were viewed as more appropriate and linked to a positive corporate reputation when the crisis situation did not contain avoidance–avoidance goal conflicts. Communication professionals also judged nonequivocal and equivocal messages to be appropriate and linked to a positive corporate reputation when they believed the specific message would satisfy the multiple goals of the crisis situation. Implications for public relations practice are discussed.

The mutant journal: how adaptations to online forces are forcing STM journals to mutate

Journals treat information in a peculiar manner. Now, online publishing is forcing rapid mutation of the journal's inherently volatile genetic code. This paper proposes a sequence of mutation, and discusses the evolutionary forces at work and how publishers can themselves adapt when faced with mutant journals.     

Developing Partnerships to Create Electronic Reserves at the University of Kansas Libraries

Abstract

Today, it is advantageous for academic libraries to look outside their own organizations to other potential campus and commercial partners when considering new services. This case study describes the planning and implementation of electronic reserves at the University of Kansas Libraries, including the integration of two commercial partners, XanEdu (provider of electronic course packs) and Blackboard (a courseware management package). Docutek was chosen as the electronic reserves software package because it offers copyright management and faxing capabilities (when hosted locally). There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of centralization versus decentralization of different aspects of electronic reserves when multiple library locations are involved.     

Stepclass-based approach to multicriteria sorting

Multicriteria sorting problem arises, among other things, when it is necessary to construct the base of Decision Maker’s rules for a classification/diagnostic Decision Support System (DSS). Advantages and drawbacks of existing methods for multicriteria sorting based on the Verbal Decision Analysis are analyzed. To overcome such drawbacks, it is proposed to apply to multicriteria sorting the main features of the VDA-based STEPCLASS method.     

How to Use VERONICA to Find Information on the Internet

As more navigational tools, such as Archie, WAIS, Gopher, World-Wide-Web and VERONICA are introduced on the Internet, it is critical that reference librarians understand the function of each one. VERONICA (Very Easy. Rodent-Oriented. Net-Wide Index to Computerized Archives) is the newest, and most powerful tool, and it takes away the mystery of where files are hidden on the Internet. Using specific examples, this article takes the reader through step-by-step guides of menu choices showing how VERONICA is accessed through a Gopher client using simple keyword and Boolean searching. In addition, this article discusses the limitations and frustrations encountered when attempting to access information using gopher servers.     

New Life to Old Serials: Digitizing Back Volumes

Wendy Robertson shared her experience with digitization projects in which she had been involved at the University of Iowa Libraries. She emphasized the need for serialists to take a participatory role in any digitization projects that include serials. Serialist participation is necessary due to the complications that may occur when digitizing serial runs. Robertson provided practical information regarding digitization projects in general terms, while also mentioning some of the specific technical aspects. She presented a wide variety of existing serial digitization projects in order to show how they are organized. Robertson concluded that a serial digitization project will benefit greatly, by being better organized and more accessible, when a serialist is included in its production.

Applying User-centered Design to Discovery Layer Evaluation in the Law Library

Abstract

Usability and user experience are an important factor in the overall value of products and services offered by law libraries. User experience evaluation tools can help librarians make better decisions for their users when choosing databases to purchase or subscribe to, designing a library website, or selecting and implementing discovery layers. This article describes an array of evaluation tools and discusses how and when they can be implemented in the law library context.     

Factors related to an individual's ability to perceive implications of dialogues

Short dialogues were devised, recorded, and validated to imply situations, motives, and emotions with little explicit content. Correlations were obtained between listeners’ abilities to perceive various kinds of implications and their psychological characteristics, educational aptitudes, sex, and other factors. The results indicate that college females are superior to college males in perceiving various kinds of implications, that this superiority occurs when at least one of the speakers is female, and that, at least for females, these abilities are closely related to a combination of certain psychological traits.     

Issues with criteria to create blacklists: An epidemiological approach

Screening criteria are a vital part of society, medicine and publishing. In this paper, a new framework, based on epidemiological principles, is developed to assess the effectiveness of criteria that are used to detect predatory behavior, or to assess whether a journal or publisher is predatory, and create blacklists. Applying epidemiological measures such as specificity, sensitivity, prevalence rates, the likelihood ratio, posterior and prior probabilities and odds, as well as Bayesian analysis, we elaborate on the false discovery rate and work towards assessing the likelihood that an entity is in fact predatory when screening criteria are used. We applied the framework to three different prevalence cases: a low prevalence rate where all journals are screened for predatory behavior assuming Jeffrey Beall's criteria are used; a higher rate when only open access journals are assessed; the highest rate where only Walt Crawford grayOA journals were screened for deceptive publishing practices. In all cases, we found a very high false discovery rate even when using reasonable values for the sensitivity and specificity rate for Beall's screening criteria.

Student Responses to Using a Computerized Database

Summary

An overwhelming majority (94%) of surveyed students rely on assistance from librarians (80%), professors (9%), and friends (5%) when using ERIC-on-CDROM, even when they are not first-time users. Almost three-quarters of the students report that ERIC-on-CDROM improves research quality (74%) and learning (70%) and evokes feelings of motivation and accomplishment (72%). All students indicate that they will return to use ERIC-on-CDROM but only 39% feel capable of transferring their skills to similar databases. Responses indicate that ERIC-on-CDROM contributes to highly individualized learning situations in which students successfully find information through assistance from both humans and computers.     

Learning to Rank

New general purpose ranking functions are discovered using genetic programming. The TREC WSJ collection was chosen as a training set. A baseline comparison function was chosen as the best of inner product, probability, cosine, and Okapi BM25. An elitist genetic algorithm with a population size 100 was run 13 times for 100 generations and the best performing algorithms chosen from these. The best learned functions, when evaluated against the best baseline function (BM25), demonstrate some significant performance differences, with improvements in mean average precision as high as 32% observed on one TREC collection not used in training. In no test is BM25 shown to significantly outperform the best learned function.     

Seeking Gifts of Rare Materials: Things to Consider

ABSTRACT

Rare materials collected by individuals, in the past and in our own time, when given to research libraries become important public assets that, as cultural heritage collections, lend distinction to the institutions that receive them and benefit education and scholarship enormously. What motivates collectors to become donors is complex. Institutions seeking such gifts must consider a number of issues and activities when embarking on (or maintaining) an active program seeking gifts-in-kind, including the librarian's personality, development models, institutional realities, challenges (negotiating, tax issues, deeds of gift), headaches (difficult donors, deposits, saying “No”), fulfilling obligations, and de-accessioning gifts.     

A new interface for a software complex to provide on-line service to VINITI DB users

Problems that are involved in increasing the quality of a user interface are considered. The authors present the results of the development of a software complex that is used to provide service to VINITI DB users when working with large data volumes and the transformation of the system to a three-tier architecture where xml data are used as a server response.
