Insourcing library outreach: Engaging technical services in outreach to student organizations

Abstract

In recent years, library outreach has become an increasingly important aspect of public services work. In order to expand capacity and engage patrons, libraries should consider expanding their library outreach programs to include the efforts and expertise of technical services personnel. In this article, librarians from Texas A&M University will share how public services librarians, cataloging experts, and preservation librarians collaborated to provide support for a student-led textbook lending library for student veterans. Through this collaboration, the library was able to develop new outreach opportunities that highlighted technical services expertise as well as lend support to an important campus effort to improve the affordability of college textbooks for veterans.

Designs of duty: Using exhibits to build partnerships

Exhibits in academic libraries are drivers for outreach. Many exhibit programs center on national traveling exhibits often because they are well done and already completed. The only input necessary from a host institution is space and a small amount of time to put up the exhibit. Locally made exhibits create a stronger connection to the community, but they are more expensive in terms of time for research and creating the exhibit, and money for printing. The adage “many hands make light work” accurately describes the local exhibit creation process when multiple groups come together. Partnerships between libraries to share exhibit content broaden the Pool of exhibit possibilities and raise awareness of exhibit programs for all partners. In this case, an exhibit at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that focused on veterans and their service-related tattoos was picked up and built upon by Eastern Illinois University. This case study covers multiple libraries, both academic and public, sharing an exhibit about veterans and their tattoos, providing outreach opportunities to veteran and service member populations at all participating libraries

Despite our society's increasing reliance on electronic documentation, to-date archives remain, largely, material repositories of cultural memory. It is an accepted historical problematic, however, that culture is often resistant to material preservation. There exists an undeniable and profound tension between scholarly efforts to reconstruct history and interpret cultural traditions and the fragmentary, and often limited, material record. That is to say, scholarship is shaped by a sinuous negotiation around the historical silences that encompass all of material culture. Historical silences, however, can at times be marginalized (or at best excluded) by a sensitive configuration of material evidence with oral history.Excluding Archival Silences: Oral History and Historical Absence uses a historically and geographically specific example of oral history to engage in a more generalist discussion of how oral reflection, especially when shaped by material evidences, can be an especially effective tool for preserving the dynamics of culture that often remain undocumented.     

新世纪20年:我国图书馆口述史理论与实践的发展趋势

进入21世纪以来,我国图书馆口述史在理论与实践方面均取得发展。记忆的回归、生长的有机体、多元文化服务的理论;积极保存、科学处理、活用益人的实践理念;预防法律争端、权利保护优先的法律伦理原则等促成了图书馆口述史的发展。但在理论与实践相结合、研究成果数量、资源公开等方面还存在问题。未来的图书馆口述资料建设应从理论联系实际、多机构联合构建馆藏网络体系、线上线下服务多措并举、建立图书馆口述史智库体系等方面努力。

Matters of scale: small-scale intensive outreach to graduate students

Abstract

As an alternative to large-scale outreach events, three public services librarians created a series of small-scale outreach events aimed at educating graduate students about library services and increasing positive perceptions of the library. The librarians ran five events with a 2:1 student-to-librarian ratio, and one event with a 13:1 student-to-librarian ratio. Using pre- and post-event surveys, the librarians evaluated student knowledge and perceptions of library services. Events of both sizes indicated that graduate students valued the outreach events and perceived increased comfort with the library following the events. However, the events with 2:1 ratios resulted in higher perceived comfort levels and more interest in scheduling follow-up appointments with librarians than the 13:1 ratio event. The researchers of this case study conclude that small-scale events have positive benefits for graduate students and that outreach assessment can be used to justify the increased time and cost commitments that are necessary for small-scale outreach events.

Doing More With Less: How a Library Expanded Its Oral History Collection

This article highlights a successful collaborative project between the Toledo–Lucas County Library System, a university professor, and a local production company in order to expand the library's African American oral history collection. The project, made possible from a state technology grant, also resulted in the production of 20 television-quality DVDs and lesson guides. In addition to describing how we expanded the library's local African American history collection, we discuss how the project required a new collaborative culture. We also describe the unintended discovery of the evolving role and required skill sets of the librarian in the new collaboration relationship. The knowledge we gained helps us to fill a gap in our understanding about how to establish specialty collections as well as the required emergent role of the librarian.

[目的/意义]通过梳理纽约公共图书馆口述史资源建设经验，为我国公共图书馆开发口述史资源提供借鉴。[方法/过程]概述纽约公共图书馆及其社区口述史项目，重点介绍纽约公共图书馆社区口述史资源的建设现状和类型，并对纽约公共图书馆口述史资源的建设经验进行整体分析。[结果/结论]众包形式是公共图书馆开发口述史资源的重要方式，应增强口述史资源的信度与效度，以地方特色作为口述史资源建设的亮点，增强口述史资源的开放性与公众兴趣度。     

民族口述历史：少数民族高校图书馆地方文献亟待拓展的领域

口述历史具有史料性质,深受国外图书馆的重视。少数民族高校图书馆地方文献工作若开辟民族口述历史这一领域,既是对民族史料的保护与抢救,也是对少数民族高校图书馆地方文献的补充。参考文献5。

分析说明图书馆开展口述历史工作的意义及其方法,指出这项工作有助于挽救历史资料,丰富馆藏文献资源、更好地为读者服务。     

口述科技史料与图书馆特藏建设

口述史料资源建设作为图书馆建设特色资源的有效途径,近年来已得到国内图书馆的重视。目前,图书馆普遍关注结合地方文献工作开展口述史料的收藏,口述科技史料的收藏尚未引起足够的重视。图书馆开展口述科技史料的收藏,可以有效保存科技史料并用以指导当前的科技工作,同时有利于建设具有学科特色的馆藏资源。     

美国哥伦比亚大学口述历史工作研究及启示

[目的/意义]哥伦比亚口述历史中心是世界口述历史研究的标杆机构，通过对其进行详细调研分析，为我国图书馆口述历史工作的开展提供借鉴与启示。[方法/过程]通过对哥伦比亚口述历史中心的3个主要网站及相关文献的调研，对其岗位设置与人员职能、资源建设与加工组织、资源存档与使用、教育培训与跨学科合作、资金来源与调查研究5个方面进行详细调查。[结果/结论]调查发现，哥伦比亚口述历史中心具有注重分工与专业背景、广泛开展跨学科合作、重视教育教学、藏教研分离4个方面的特点。从图书馆的视角出发，对我国图书馆口述历史工作的开展，提出以下4点启示：培养人才，建设专业团队；拓展选题范围，进行跨学科合作；积极参与，搭建课程体系；分解职能，实现分离管理。     

美国民俗生活中心口述文献的采集与利用

[目的/意义]推动我国图书馆的口述文献采集工作，提升我国图书馆口述文献利用服务水平。[方法/过程]通过网络、文献、邮件等方式，对美国国会图书馆下属的美国民俗生活中心进行全面调研，对其开展的退伍军人历史、职业民俗、民权口述历史调查和洛马克斯家族等典型项目进行介绍总结，在此基础上分析该中心开展口述文献采集与利用的经验。[结果/结论]分析结果认为，该中心积极利用数字技术与平台、探索多元化采集模式、加强与社会组织合作、设立各种基金与倡导捐款、尊重参与者合法权益等做法和经验，对我国图书馆界具有一定的借鉴意义。     

国内图书情报档案领域口述资料研究进展及特点

指出口述资料受到国内历史学、档案学、民俗学、社会学以及图书馆学等领域的广泛关注,相关研究呈现出跨学科、多领域的特点,并对30多年来我国口述资料研究文献进行梳理,着重归纳总结图书情报档案领域口述资料研究的进展和特点,最后针对目前该领域口述资料研究中存在的问题提出建议。

文章首先简要介绍现代口述历史的含义及其发展历程，阐述了口述历史对于地方文献工作的意义，并结合自己的工作实践探索开展口述历史工作的方法和需要注意的问题。
