MASS MEDIA AND CONSUMERIST VALUES IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

In this study, we report results from parallel cross-sectionsurveys of probability samples from the two largest cities inChina. We pose two questions; What are consumerist value orientationsanchored in Chinese individualism? How is mass media exposurerelated to the emergence of such values? We find three stableconsumerist value orientations: conspicuous consumption, aspirationfor self-actualization, and worshipping Western lifestyles.Those who are younger, better educated, and financially betteroff are the most likely bearers of these values. Further, bearingthese values is related to frequent reading of consumer magazinesand exposure to outdoor advertisements. Placed in the contextof China's on-going economic reforms, we discuss how these resultsindicate the changing social and cultural milieu of China'ssocial transformation, and what their implications are for theprospect of political pluralism in post-Tiananmen China.     

THE RISE OF POSTMATERIALIST VALUES AND CHANGING RELIGIOUS ORIENTATIONS, GENDER ROLES AND SEXUAL NORMS

This article investigates the relationship between Materialistand Postmaterialist values, and attitudes towards religiousand social norms as well as behavioral indicators in industrialsocieties. It focusses on the question whether Postmaterialistvalues—indicated through a greater emphasis on such goalsas self-expression, quality of life and belonging—arerelated to a decline of traditional orientations. The empiricalpart is based on the data of a unique cross-national dataset,the World Values Survey 1981–1982, which compares religiousand moral beliefs of populations of sixteen countries with variouspolitical, cultural and ethnic characteristics. It also takesinto account behavioral indicators related to these norms, e.g.birth and divorce rates in these countries. According to theresults, Post-materialist values are closely related to a declineof traditional values. There also exist strong linkages betweenindividual-level values and the actual behavior of the peoplesin the given societies. But besides their detachment from traditionalreligion, Postmaterialists are significantly more likely thanMaterialists to spend time thinking about the meaning of lifeand, thus, may even have more potential interest in religion.     

CANDID{acute}ATE EVALUATIONS AND THE USE OF CONSENSUS INFORMATION: DIFFERENTAL RELIANCE ON SELF-MONITORING PROPENSITY

Broadly, the task of this paper is to examine the connectionbetween social and individual opinion. More specifically, doesconsensus information, as manifested in the relative attractivenessof candidate appearances, affect candidate evaluations? If so,are differences significant, and are all individuals equallyaffected? By employing an experimental design and incorporatingthe personality construct of self-monitoring, I find that significantdifferences do in fact appear. These differences result fromthe relative weight individuals assign to social sources ofinformation in decision processes. High self-monitors are foundto be quite sensitive to consensus information (attractive ounattractive appearances) whereas low self-monitors are lessso. By conceiving physical appearances as consensus information,a unique understanding of the bond linking individual to collectiveopinion emerges. The great majority of mankind are satisfiedwith appearances, as though they were realities, and are oftenmore influenced by the things that seem than by those that are.     

THE EDITORIAL PRODUCTION PROCESS AND EDITORIAL VALUES AS INFLUENCES ON THE OPINIONS OF THE BRITISH PRESS TOWARDS EUROPE

British newspapers have been criticised for their coverage of the European Union and accused of contributing to the strength of anti-European opinion in the United Kingdom. Despite these claims, research by media sociologists and political communications scholars has commonly focused on news reporting, overlooking editorial opinions on European issues. This article addresses this gap by presenting a sociological analysis of editorial journalism in relation to European integration at 10 British national newspapers. The findings show that newspapers vary widely in the resources and roles they have assigned for editorialising on Europe, and provide an original insight into the common routines employed for producing editorial opinion. A model, entitled the editorial production process, is developed to illustrate the key stages of this routine. The specialist practices of editorial journalism are discussed through the identification of a set of editorial values used to select issues for comment.     

EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF CONSERVATORS AND RESTORERS

Abstract

In order to test some of the methods of archaeological bronze conservation, a procedure was perfected that reproduces the structure and composition of original patinas. Then the most common methods of treatment were applied on test samples thus prepared and on archaeological items. This experiment has allowed us to choose the best treatment in accordance with the following requirements: restraint of corrosion, speed of operation, lack of colour alteration and avoidance of break-up or solution of patina.
