The Restoration and Preservation of Old Fabrics

Abstract

A very moderate, non-destructive radioactivation of oil paintings, induced by thermal neutron bombardment, such that approximately only one in 10¹² of the atoms comprising any painting is transformed into a radioactive species, has been found to produce temporary radioactivity sufficient to expose photographic film placed in direct contact with the paintings.

The resulting autoradiographs resemble conventional X-radiographs in that they reveal structural details in depth of both the painting and its support. Since the radioactivities arising from the different elements within a painting decay in different manners and at different rates, a series of significantly distinct auto radiographs can be obtained of any painting by making exposures through appropriate filters and at varying times following the original activation. Analysis of such a series of autoradiographs permits the identification of a number of the pigments used in a painting, together with information about the manner in which they were originally laid down by the artist and their distribution throughout the body of the painting.

Preliminary investigations have shown that the stability of oil paintings is unaffected by the activation procedure. The inherently necessary radiation dose absorbed by a painting as a result of activation sufficient for autoradiography is of the order of 50 rads. Paintings subjected to absorbed doses one hundred times as great as the dose necessary for autoradiography exhibit no changes in color, hardness, flexibility and solubility three years after their original activation.     

The Use of Polyethylene Glycols in the Field of Painting Restoration

Abstract

A stereocamera adapted to a binocular microscope is used to produce stereomicrograph colour transparencies. Such slides can be examined with a viewer or a stereoscope. They can also be projected on to a screen with a special projector and viewed through eyeglasses. Flash bulbs are used to eliminate vibration problems during exposure.

The Cataloging Advisory Group

Abstract

Communication of public catalog issues throughout the University of Alabama Libraries has been and still is a major concern of the cataloging department. Many cataloging department heads hold the firm belief that improved user access to the libraries' collections can be provided through an improvement in the communication patterns between several key departments of the libraries and the catalog department. Through the input of a group of public service and collection development librarians, the department should be able to assess the time priorities for materials processing, resulting in a greater degree of probability that useful backlogs would be made accessible with a minimum of delay. As a cataloging department head, it is also my belief that a discussion of the cataloging process and the concerns of the catalogers could lead to more consistent and more efficient processing of materials. In November 1993 the Cataloging Advisory Group was formed as a one-year experiment in communication. Since that time the group has gone through numerous changes in both membership and charge but has continued to be one of the stronger discussion groups in the UA Libraries. The paper explores the group and its successes and failures during its six-year history.     

《举秀才》民谣的复原

《举秀才》民谣即所谓《桓灵时童谣》,古来都相信是东汉民谣。本文指出流行文本只是晋代民谣,它是在东汉民谣的基础上改编的。文章从《举秀才》诗的异文、选举制度史及古代语音等角度,对诗的原貌进行了复原,揭示了这首民谣在流传过程中发生的各种变异。《举秀才》诗的历史演变启示我们,后世文献中记录的前世歌谣很难看成是产生时代的原貌,传世的所谓伊耆氏时代的《蜡辞》、原始狩猎时代的《弹歌》、帝尧时代的《击壤歌》等,都是靠不住的。     

Internet Research: The Role of the Focus Group

LIS researchers have used the face-to-face focus group interview for many years. Other researchers have recently embraced a new rendition of the focus group—the online focus group. This article examines face-to-face and online focus group modes through a review of actual research experiences using the two approaches. Relevant literature is considered. Comparisons are then drawn as to similarities and contrasts in methodology, group dynamics, and group communication. Within this context, possible applications of the online focus group approach for library and information science researchers and practitioners can be considered. Rapid development of technology coupled with the face-to-face and the online focus group approaches may allow the creation and implementation of the hybrid version, the virtual focus group.
