Computer Search Services and Information Brokering in Academic Libraries

The information explosion is bringing many changes to academic libraries. This article discusses some of the changes and results found during an investigative study of reference departments in forty-four libraries. The computer search services results deal with administrative concerns, organization and staffing, staff training, user education and orientation, fees, quick reference and end-user searching, and policy manuals. Discussed also are the information-fee-based services developed by several of the academic libraries visited. A short history of information brokering, characteristics of an informaiton broker, and charging methods are included. People who need information on demand can use either a library which offers a computer search service or a type of information broker.     

Mediated Computer Search Services Relative to Instruction Services

Abstract

To assess the quality and usefulness of one health sciences library's mediated computer search service, a survey was undertaken to determine satisfaction rates, why users do or do not use the service, and how useful the service is perceived to be in comparison to instructional service. Satisfaction rates were high, with users indicating librarian expertise and time/cost savings as the main reasons for using the service. Non-users indicated that they preferred to do their own searching, and many were unaware of the service. Though a majority of respondents do not currently use the service, surprisingly a majority of respondents placed significant value on the mediated search service in relation to instruction.     

Using a Datashow Projector to Present a Computer Search

Librarians are coming to rely increasingly on electronic resources to which access can be gained by telephone and they want to demonstrate the use of these resources to colleagues and library patrons. Library online catalogs, bibliographic utilities, database searching vendors-all can be accessed through telephone lines, but telecommunication lines are notoriously undependable. For cost, efficiency, and reliability, computer software packages that allow one to download data and form "canned" presentations from it are becoming more necessary. This paper describes the use of one such package, Showmaker, which comes bundled with the Kodak Datashow iquid Crystal Display (LCD)Projector.
