利用Lucene的全文索引和搜索技术,开发了与ILAS III集成的全文搜索型OPAC系统Bookle。介绍了Bookle的体系结构以及参数管理器、索引器、搜索器、用户接口等的设计与实现。Bookle系统实现了扩展书目信息的自动抓取并使之本地化,扩展了书目检索点,为读者提供了书目记录及其扩展书目信息的任意词全文搜索等服务,弥补了ILAS III OPAC的不足。

In search of query patterns: A case study of a university OPAC

A transaction log analysis of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) OPAC was conducted to identify query and search failure patterns with the goal of identifying areas of improvement for the system. One semester’s worth of OPAC transaction logs were obtained and from these, 641,991 queries were extracted and used for this work. Issues investigated included query length, frequency and type of search options and Boolean operators used as well as their relationships with search failure. Among other findings, results indicate that a majority of the queries were simple, with short query lengths and a low usage of Boolean operators. Failure analysis revealed that on average, users had an almost equal chance of obtaining no records or at least one record to a submitted query. We propose enhancements and suggest future areas of work to improve the users’ search experience with the NTU OPAC.

Supporting ease-of-use and user control: desired features and structure of Web-based online IR systems

The emergence of Web-based IR systems calls for the need to support ease-of-use as well as user control. This study attempts to investigate users’ perceptions of ease-of-use versus user control, and desired functionalities as well as desired interface structure of online IR systems in supporting both ease-of-use and user control. Forty subjects who had an opportunity to learn and use five online databases participated in the study. Multiple methods were employed to collect data. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data show that users consider both ease-of-use and user control are essential for effective retrieval. The results are discussed within the context of a model of optimal support for ease-of-use and user control, particularly, emphasizing on the balance between system role and user involvement in achieving various IR sub-tasks.

A study of awareness in multimedia search

Awareness of another’s activity is an important aspect of facilitating collaboration between users, enabling an “understanding of the activities of others” (Dourish & Bellotti, 1992). In this paper we investigate the role of awareness and its effect on search performance and behaviour in collaborative multimedia retrieval. We focus on the scenario where two users are searching at the same time on the same task, and via an interface, can see the activity of the other user. The main research question asks: does awareness of another searcher aid a user when carrying out a multimedia search session?To encourage awareness, an experimental study was designed where two users were asked to compete to find as many relevant video shots as possible under different awareness conditions. These were individual search (no awareness), Mutual awareness (where both users could see the other’s search screen), and unbalanced awareness (where one user is able to see the other’s screen, but not vice-versa). Twelve pairs of users were recruited, and the four worst performing TRECVID 2006 search topics were used as search tasks, under four different awareness conditions. We present the results of this study, followed by a discussion of the implications for multimedia information retrieval systems.
