Using iPads to Facilitate Library Instruction Sessions in a SCALE-UP Classroom

This study details a trial in which three undergraduate library instruction sessions were conducted on a class set of iPads in a SCALE-UP classroom. The iPads suggested strong potential as replacements for desktop computers and demonstrated support for key active learning approaches: instant polling, content sharing, and navigation of Webpages and databases. The SCALE-UP classroom has made notable contributions in promoting undergraduate learning, and its advantages were found to be applicable to library instruction. The pedagogy that the space is designed to reinforce, collaborative learning segments interspersed with lecture components, seemed to promote student engagement in library instruction sessions.     

Broadening Impact for Library Exhibitions and Speakers

Libraries curate exhibitions and host speakers to promote collections and engage communities. Traditional library exhibit spaces present information gaps for visitors. To bridge these gaps, the University of Florida (UF) created and deployed innovative technologies, the Community Engagement Engine (CEE) for iPads (handheld and kiosks). The CEE facilitates visitor's registration as well as questions and comments sent directly to curators with automated email responses with relevant materials. The CEE allows libraries to aggregate visitor information for targeted outreach and assessment. This article discusses the CEE for innovative community engagement, including considerations for other institutions interested in engaged exhibitions programs.     

Assessment of an iPad Loan Program in an Academic Medical Library: A Case Study

An academic medical library expanded its iPad loan service to multiple campus libraries and conducted an assessment of the service. iPads loaded with medical and educational apps were loaned for two-week checkouts from five library campus locations. Device circulation statistics were tracked and users were invited to complete an online survey about their experience. Data were gathered and analyzed for 11 months. The assessment informed the library on how best to adapt the service, including what resources to add to the iPads, and the decision to move devices to campuses with more frequent usage.     

Interlibrary Loan Options With Digital Equipment

Technology has changed over time for interlibrary loan; digital equipment now gives opportunities to deliver requests without damaging rare or fragile materials. Examples of the equipment are cameras, flat bed scanners, form feed scanners, iPhones, iPads, handheld scanning wands, microreel scanners, and microfiche scanners. In this article, we will take a look at uses for copying rare books and uses of digital equipment to fill interlibrary loan requests.

Summary

The purpose of this article is to provide readers with creative methods for procuring funding for building an electronic information literacy instruction classroom. Using the Library Instruction Program at Niagara County Community College as a case study, the authors explain how grant funding was obtained to create a 24-computer lab classroom to teach students how to search for information effectively. A complete explanation of instruction provided to grant participants is also included. This article is particularly useful for librarians working with limited resources and for instruction librarians responsible for teaching students how to search for information in electronic form effectively.     

iPotential: Mobile electronic resource management on an iPad

When out of the office for conferences or other obligations, those who manage e-resources must often take their work with them. With the advent of Apple's iPad, the authors made the decision to investigate the possibilities and potential offered by this new device for mobile management of electronic resources. To accomplish this, the authors used iPads to test the various systems and tools utilized every day to manage and maintain the library's electronic resources to find out what worked, and what didn't. While the results vary by system, overall, the iPad is a useful but limited means for electronic resource management.

[目的/意义]基于三元交互理论,研究大学生在翻转课堂中参与《信息检索》课程学习与个体特质、组织环境、课堂设计的关系。[方法/过程]通过梳理和总结相关研究成果,预调查和专家调查,形成学生课堂参与行为测量量表。利用因子分析方法提炼关键变量,通过结构方程模型方法探究个体特质、组织保障、组织认同、课堂设计等变量对大学生学习能力的影响。[结果/结论]研究发现作为前置因素的个体特质、组织认同、组织保障变量相互影响;组织认同和个体特质不仅直接作用于课堂设计,还通过课堂设计对大学生学习行为发挥积极而显著的作用。本文认为采取完善支撑环境、引导大学生自主学习、优化课堂设计以及加强课外实践等措施可促进大学生学习,提升大学生信息素养。     

The Flipped Classroom as a Tool for Engaging Discipline Faculty in Collaboration: A Case Study in Library-Business Collaboration

This case study focuses on an innovative approach to the flipped classroom as a tool for productive library-discipline faculty collaboration on information literacy instruction. The argument is presented that the flipped classroom can be a pathway into the disciplines that can be used in overcoming the disadvantages of the one-shot and other barriers to collaboration. The case study will outline the reasons for a successful collaboration on integrating information literacy into this undergraduate business course and for its extension to five additional business courses. Practical examples of learning outcomes, in-class activities, and assessment are provided.

图书馆信息素养翻转课堂学习投入和学习效果模型研究——以自我决定理论和学习投入理论为视角

基于自我决定理论和学习投入理论,建立图书馆信息素养翻转课堂学习投入和学习效果概念模型,并采用结构方程模型方法对该模型进行验证。结果表明:基本心理需要、自主性学习动机、翻转课堂教学质量均显著正向影响学习投入,控制性学习动机对学习投入影响不显著;学习投入显著正向影响学习效果和学习满意度,学习效果正向影响学习满意度。据此提出提升图书馆信息素养翻转课堂学习投入和学习效果的建议。     

基于MOOC构建高校课程教学新模式

在分析MOOC教学模式的基础上,综合对比MOOC教学模式与传统教学模式的优势与不足,基于MOOC理念构建集在线课程平台、课堂教学平台和教学服务平台于一体的高校课程教育新模式,即在线课程平台提供在线课程资源和学习服务,课堂教学平台采取“翻转课堂”的教学形式,教学服务平台为课程资源建设和学生学习提供信息资源和嵌入式的服务,用以改善教学效果,提高高校教学质量.

文章以沈阳农业大学检索课教学实践为例,研究网络化泛在信息环境下的检索课教学重点,探讨以提高信息利用能力为目标的教学模式、教学内容和考核方式：建立课堂教学与网络教学兼顾、检索大赛与检索课教学并行的教学模式;增加文献增长及老化规律、影响因子及分区等信息评价与分析方面内容的学时比重,将数据库和网络资源利用部分的教学重点调整到对检索结果的分析与评价,着眼于对信息检索系统强大数据挖掘与分析功能的介绍;对学习态度、课堂表现、作业质量及提交情况、利用网络教学平台效果、期末考核结果等因素进行灵活多样的考核,实现对学习过程和学习结果的评价。     

Targeted Evolution of Embedded Librarian Services: Providing Mobile Reference and Instruction Services Using iPads

The University at Buffalo Health Sciences Library provides reference and instructional services to support research, curricular, and clinical programs of the University at Buffalo. With funding from an NN/LM MAR Technology Improvement Award, the University at Buffalo Health Sciences Library (UBHSL) purchased iPads to develop embedded reference and educational services. Usage statistics were collected over a ten-month period to measure the frequency of iPad use for mobile services. While this experiment demonstrates that the iPad can be used to meet the library user's needs outside of the physical library space, this article will also offer advice for others who are considering implementing their own program.

Pageant of the Tsars: The Romanov Coronation Albums

This essay and checklist document the exhibition Pageant of the Tsars: The Romanov Coronation Albums, held at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens February 16–June 8, 2013. The exhibition focused on the history of the Romanovs through the lens of the coronation albums of the tsars. Based on the collection of five of the seven coronation albums held in the Hillwood library, the exhibition was supplemented with objects from the museum and library collections, loans from other institutions, and electronic versions of the albums available on iPads in the exhibition and via the iBooks store. The show marked the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Romanov dynasty in 1613.

The Application of Reliability and Validity Measures to Assess the Effectiveness of an Undergraduate Citation Rubric

The increasing popularity of rubrics to assess student learning outcomes in the information literacy classroom is evident within library and information science literature. However, there is a lack of research detailing scientific evaluation of these assessment instruments to determine their reliability and validity. The goal of this study was to use two common measurement methods to determine the content validity and internal consistency reliability of a citation rubric developed by the researcher. Results showed the rubric needed modification in order to improve reliability and validity. Changes were made and the updated rubric will be used in the classroom in a future semester.
