The authors sought to identify college students at risk for experiencing a mental health crisis that warranted a psychiatric evaluation at a hospital and/or a psychiatric hospitalization. A retrospective chart review of college students evaluated at a comprehensive psychiatric emergency program during a 1‐year period was conducted. Demographic variables, mental health treatment history, diagnosis, and hospital discharge plans were found to predict those students likely to be hospitalized and those likely to have positive discharge outcomes.  相似文献

With an increased demand for mental health services, perceived increased severity of students presenting for services, and increased number of students prescribed psychotropic medications, university and college counseling center directors have had to increasingly identify psychiatric service options. Psychiatry residents can potentially help fill these needs. To better understand the role of psychiatry residents in university and college counseling programs, we conducted a web-based survey of United States psychiatry residency program directors. This study describes clinical activities and rotation characteristics of psychiatric residents working in counseling centers. Of the 48 residency programs that responded, 27 provide rotations at university or college counseling centers, and of those with rotations, 100% report that the residents rate these as very good or excellent. Expanding psychiatry residency rotations at college counseling centers may be mutually beneficial both to the centers and to psychiatric residents.  相似文献

Policies on psychiatric leave were developed on college campuses to deal humanely with students who need to leave campus in order to seek more intensive mental health care. These policies were developed with benevolent intent, but the impact of the policies may be overly restrictive of students' rights to return to campus. While the prevalence of specific phobias and social phobias is believed to be high in the general adult population, little data exists regarding the prevalence of these fears among college students. This paper describes an epidemiological study that surveyed 813 college students regarding the severity of fears experienced toward 12 objects and situations. In addition, this study assessed for students' interest in seeking therapy for these fears at their university's counseling or mental health center. The data suggest that fears of spiders (34% of the total sample), public speaking (31%), snakes (22%), heights (18%), and injections (16%) are quite common among college students, and 18% of students are interested in receiving treatment for their fears. The paper concludes with some recommendations on how exposure-based treatments could be conducted through college counseling or mental health centers to address these potentially academic- and socially impairing problems.  相似文献

The assessment and treatment of students with borderline personality traits or disorders poses specific challenges for clinicians at college and university mental health centers complicated, frequently, by a model of brief treatment frameworks and high patient volumes. Students with borderline pathology will be well represented in student health centers and will likely generate unusually complex and concerning situations for clinicians and administrators. Accurate diagnosis of borderline pathology, avoidance of iatrogenic complications related to misdiagnosis, and referral to informed and evidence-based interventions can guide clinicians’ management. Risk management concerns are best addressed by a clear and realistic understanding of the borderline pathology. The author proposes a variety of interventions for college and university mental health clinicians with the goal of accurate diagnosis of borderline personality, management focusing on safety for both students and clinicians, and targeted referrals for both borderline symptomatology and co-occurring conditions.  相似文献

BackgroundBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with high rates of suicidal and self-injurious behaviors and a substantial proportion of BPD patients have a history of trauma, particularly childhood sexual abuse (CSA).ObjectiveTo compare the clinical presentation severity in female adolescent inpatients with BPD with and without history of prolonged CSA.Participants and settingFemale adolescent BPD patients admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit.MethodsA retrospective analysis of records of the inpatients, divided into two groups: with (n = 38) and without (n = 40) a history of prolonged CSA. Prolonged CSA was defined as sexual abuse continuing for at least 3 months. Demographic and clinical data, including number and duration of psychiatric hospitalizations until the age 19, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicide attempts, cigarette smoking, alcohol and drug use, and sexual impulsivity were compared between the two groups.ResultsThe BPD + prolonged CSA group had a larger duration of the first psychiatric hospitalization, number of hospitalizations and cumulative length of hospitalizations compared with the control group. Furthermore, the BPD + prolonged CSA group had a higher number of suicidal attempts, and higher rates of severe NSSI events, cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and sexual impulsivity.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated for the first time that adolescent female BPD inpatients with a history of prolonged CSA, manifest more severe clinical presentation compared to those without prolonged CSA. Hence, it appears essential to encourage therapists to inquire about history of CSA and refer adolescent female BPD inpatients with prolonged CSA to appropriate intensive therapy.  相似文献

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant issue among college students but few resources are available to college mental health professionals. This article consolidates extant knowledge on NSSI from the empirical and clinical literature, including common NSSI characteristics (rates, methods, demographics, and concomitants), intrapersonal and social functions, and NSSI's relation to suicide. Practical strategies for assessing NSSI among students are presented, as are empirically informed treatments. With this knowledge, college mental health professionals will have a theoretical and practical understanding of NSSI and will be better equipped to work with students who self-injure.  相似文献

采用UPI调查法调查了若干在校大学生,从调查结果看,当代大学生的心理状况总体是健康向上的,但部分学生也不同程度地存在着缺乏自信心、有强迫思维倾向、意志不坚强、缺乏耐心和目标不明确等心理问题。大学生心理健康教育工作是一个有机整体,需要国家、社会、学校、家庭和大学生个人的共同努力。国家要重视精神文明建设,为大学生心理健康成长创造良好的社会环境;学校要真正做到素质教育,为大学生心理健康成长提供良好的校园环境;家长要注重自立自强教育,为大学生心理健康成长提供良好的家庭环境;大学生要对照心理健康标准,加强自我教育并引导个人心理健康成长。  相似文献

了解师范类专科院校大学生的心理健康状况,为有针对性的开展心理健康教育和心理咨询工作提供依据。方法:采用自编问卷调查及量表施测的方法,对陇南师专754名大学生进行了研究分析。结果:第一,专科大学生SCL-90各症状因子分均值普遍高于同年龄组常模,且存在显著性差异;第二,问卷调查显示,对专科大学生心理健康影响最大的因素依次为:就业压力、人际交往压力、学习压力,这与SCL-90量表施测结果是一致的;第三,量表各症状中,在强迫、人际关系、抑郁、焦虑和恐怖因子上,女大学生心理健康水平显著低于男大学生。师范类专科大学生心理健康的整体水平偏低,学校应高度重视,采取有效措施进行干预。  相似文献

采用SCL-90对福建省某高校2015~2019年连续5届共9238名农村生源大学新生心理健康状况进行测查与分析。结果表明,农村生源大学新生心理健康总体状况并不比城镇生源差,但强迫症状和恐惧两个因子得分较高;女生心理健康水平总体低于男生,在强迫症状、焦虑、恐惧、精神病性因子方面较为突出;来自独生子女家庭的学生有更高焦虑、偏执倾向,且焦虑水平高于全国青年均值;来自非完整家庭的学生有更高抑郁、焦虑倾向,且焦虑水平也高于全国青年均值。基于研究结果,建议要将积极心理学的理念融入到农村大学生心理健康教育中,以生为本提升学生心理健康自助能力,不断健全和完善心理健康教育工作体系,深化“学校—家庭—社会”三方联动,以进一步提升农村生源大学生心理健康教育工作质效。  相似文献

This study examined the assessment of resilience in undergraduate college students. Multigroup comparisons of the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD‐RISC; Connor & Davidson, 2003) were performed on general population students and students recruited from campus mental health offices offering college counseling, psychiatric‐support, and disability‐support services. Results found that the 10‐item CD‐RISC demonstrated strong fit and reliability, with significantly higher scores for general population students. Implications for college counseling include assessing and promoting resilience on campuses.  相似文献

目的:了解安徽农村特岗教师心理健康状况。方法:采用症状自评量表(SCL-90)对261名农村特岗教师进行问卷调查,所得数据用SPSS18.0进行分析处理。结果:(1)农村特岗教师SCL-90总分高于全国青年常模;(2)不同性别的特岗教师心理健康状况存在差异,其中男性在敌对因子上的得分显著高于女性;(3)不同学历的特岗教师心理健康状况存在差异,其中本科学历教师在敌对因子上的得分显著高于专科学历教师;(4)不同学科的特岗教师心理健康状况不存在显著性差异;(5)特岗教师的心理健康状况在是否独生子女上存在差异,其中独生子女的教师在强迫症状、恐怖、偏执和精神病性因子以及心理健康总分上均显著高于非独生子女的教师;结论:农村特岗教师心理健康水平偏低。  相似文献

Given that there is evidence that college student-athletes may be at risk for psychological disturbances (Pinkerton, Hintz, & Barrow, 1989), and possibly underutilizing college mental health services (Watson & Kissinger, 2007), the purpose of this study was to examine attitudes toward mental illness and help seeking among college student-athletes compared to college student nonathletes. The roles that athletic identity and gender play in treatment-seeking comfort were examined. Contrary to what was hypothesized, the results showed that student-athletes and nonathletes did not significantly differ in willingness to seek mental health treatment. Student-athletes perceived significantly less discrimination toward individuals based on mental illness status.  相似文献
