Usage patterns of an online search system.

This article examines the usage patterns of the ELHILL retrieval program of the National Library of Medicine's MEDLARS system. Based on a sample of 6759 searches, the study analyzes the frequency of various commands and command options, classifies messages issued by the system, and investigates searcher error rates. The article concludes with suggestions for improving and redesigning both the program and query language.     

Response time variations in an online search system.

The response time characteristics of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) ELHILL bibliographic search system are examined in this article. Transactions for a five-week period are analyzed and average response times are calculated for typical search commands, by time of day, and by file being searched. Overall, the response time of the system was found to be 2.1 seconds, a very low value. Based on statistical tests of significance applied to the data, it was concluded that response time differences can be explained in terms of the number of users on the system and not the command issued by the user nor the file the user searched.

On-line professionals

Psychotherapy and counselling services are now available on-line, and expanding rapidly. Yet there appears almost no ethical analysis of this on-line mode of delivery of such professional services. In this paper I present such an analysis by considering the limitations on-line contact imposes on the nature of the professional–client relationship. The analysis proceeds via the contrast between the face-to-face case and the on-line case. At the core of the problem must be the recognition that on-line interaction imposes a physical barrier largely permitting only those disclosures of self we choose to make available, and greatly restricting the range of involuntary features and behaviours. I show why this is problematic, first, for the development of a close professional–client relationship, with particular emphasis on such failures as diagnosis and monitoring of the patient. Second I describe the importance of the development of professional character, and of how the on-line environment fails to provide a context for such character traits to emerge and develop.

On-line tuning of PI/Lead compensators for decoupling multivariable processes with specifications on phase and bandwidth

In this paper, an on-line identification and auto-tuning method is proposed for multivariable processes. Systematic identifying procedures and on-line tuning rules are developed for computing parameters of proportional plus integration and Lead compensators. The performance of the compensated systems can be evaluated by wanted bandwidth, phase margins and low-interacting characteristics. No iteration for finding parameters of compensator is needed. Parameters of PI/Lead compensator can be retuned if they are needed. Three numerical examples give the proposed method provides better performance, robustness and less interaction effects than those of other mentioned on-line computing methods.

本文以我国网络虚拟物品消费者为实证研究对象,运用探索性因子分析与验证性因子分析,系统地分析了消费者进行网络虚拟物品购买的动机因素,创新性地得出网络虚拟物品消费的五大动机即"性与攀比"、"成就"、"领导"、"实用与便利"以及"沉溺".通过实证分析设计出网络虚拟物品消费动机的测量量表.最后讨论了结论的营销应用与研究局限性.     

A parser for on-line search system evaluation

This paper describes a computer program which converts the text of user input and system responses from an on-line search system into fixed format records which describe the interaction. It also outlines the syntax of the query language and the format of the output record produced by the parser. The study discusses problems in constructing the parser, the logic of the parser and its performance characterestics, as well as recommendations for improving the process of logging on-line searches.     

具有几何分布统计特征的在线租赁竞争分析

近年来,在线算法的兴起为金融领域的研究提供了新的视角,但传统的竞争分析方法有意规避概率分布假设。在金融领域中,似乎有时忽略这些极有价值的信息而只运用标准的竞争比方法分析显然是一个极大浪费。在本文中,我们首次结合输入结构的分布信息研究了离散型在线租赁问题,建立了最优的离散型在线租赁决策模型,并给出了最优的竞争策略及其竞争比。相比较Karp和El Yaniv的研究结果,由于本文引进了输入的分布信息使得竞争比改善;而相对于Fujiwara的研究结果,由于本文研究了离散型情形,给出了实际问题的精确解。

Methods of teaching on-line bibliographic searching: Experience at the College of Librarianship Wales

We have been teaching students about on-line bibliographic searching since 1972. With the help of British Library Research and Development Department funding we have recently extended our teaching in this area and now use services such as Lockheed, System Development Corporation and the British Library's BLAISE. This paper discusses aspects of the design of courses on on-line bibliographic searching, describes various methods we have used to demonstrate searches to students in order to prepare them for undertaking a live search themselves, and compares the relative costs, in terms of system costs and staff time, of these methods. The methods of demonstration involve the playing back of recorded searches on videotape, audio cassettes and digital cassettes as well as live demonstration and may be of interest to other teachers of library and information science students or to those involved in the training of people to carry out on-line bibliographic searching.     

On-line learning performance and computer anxiety measure for unemployed adult novices using a grey relation entropy method

On-line learning is an asynchronous computer-based learning mode that allows learners to learn anytime and anywhere in their own environment using information and communication technology. It can be considered as a way to bridge the digital gap. How a computer novice performs in such virtual and asynchronous learning environments is an interesting issue in human–computer interaction research. This paper presents the results of a study to investigate on-line learning performance and computer anxiety for unemployed adult novices. In this study, we propose a novel idea that integrates the concept of Shannon entropy into a grey relational analysis model. The proposed method was used to measure human information behavior in relation to on-line learning performance and computer anxiety. A total of 115 unemployed adults voluntarily participated in the experimental study. All experimental subjects were divided into groups according to individual differences in gender, age ranges, educational levels, and learning performances. Taking advantage of the grey relation entropy operation, we derived the perceptive correlations among different classified groups in terms of the accessibility of on-line learning and computer anxiety scales, respectively. Through the empirical study, certain on-line learning characteristics were also identified.
