高校图书馆员教师角色探析

对于中外学术界长期争论的图书馆员教师属性问题,文章认为高校图书馆员是一复合角色,从职业角度讲,高校馆员不是教师,而复合角色之一是具有教师性角色,所以高校馆员又是教师,高校馆员应履行自己的教育教学职责和义务。文章论述了高校馆员教师角色形成的依据。     

Motivations and barriers in the adoption of OERs: The role of subject librarians

OASES (Open Access for Student Educational Success) is unique in that it is a subject librarian based Open Educational Resource (OER) program. Using survey results and the experience of the OASES program, this qualitative analysis utilizes the types of motivations observed in adoptions of new innovations through time applied to OER, examines the barriers to OER adoption encountered by instructors and the OASES program and how subject librarians can help in overcoming them, explores the motivations and needs that come into play for instructors switching to OERs, and examines the expertise and connections subject librarians bring to the table toward successful OER adoptions.     

Data disaggregation: the case of Asian and Pacific Islander data and the role of health sciences librarians

Health disparities within Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities are often masked due to aggregated data. Lack of adequate data limits required health care services for these communities. While moving forward toward health equity, it is critical that disparities for API communities are acknowledged and addressed. This article focuses on the issues of aggregated data for API communities followed by suggestions on how health sciences librarians can support and promote better practices for data disaggregation.

The librarian stereotype: How librarians are damaging their image and profession

Every profession has a stereotype, and librarians are no stranger to this phenomenon. This article discusses the stereotype, how librarians have responded to its use in the public sphere, and reasons why the author sees the profession's reaction as problematic.     

OASES: The role of subject librarians in an effective campus OER program

OASES (Open Access for Student Educational Success) is unique in that it is a subject librarian based Open Educational Resource (OER) program that includes twelve subject librarians. A history of the OASES program is given that underscores the advantages of utilizing subject librarians in several large departmental adoptions of open access textbooks and custom course packs. This paper examines the success of the OASES program, determining if the current librarian job market shows evidence of subject librarian involvement in OER programs. Additionally, a qualitative analysis of the OASES program is conducted using two organizational change frameworks from the social sciences.     

Resources for research and learning: The databases of the Research Libraries Group

The Research Libraries Group, Inc., is a not-for-profit membership corporation dedicated to improving access to information for research and learning. To this end, RLG provides the Research Libraries Information Network database of bibliographic records, files of article citations and abstracts, and other specialized research data-bases, all of which are accessible worldwide via the Internet.     

Developing research capacity in health librarians: a review of the evidence

This critical review considers current issues of research capacity development in UK health care and the role of health librarianship in this context, placing particular focus on the use of research networks. There is a growing literature base recognising the need for librarians to engage more with research. The concepts of evidence-based health librarianship and clinical librarianship are discussed in the context of research and examples of existing good practice are reviewed. It is suggested that librarians should build on this through better consideration of evidence based methodologies, hierarchies of evidence, improvement of research skills, and a collective endeavour to identify research priorities. The importance research capacity is being given in the Department of Health R&D strategy and the use of networks in achieving this is discussed, and it is suggested that the utilisation of networks and collaboration should be undertaken and explored in more depth in developing research capacity in health librarianship. Areas where librarians currently engage with research and use networks and collaborative practices to contribute to the research base are reviewed. A co-ordinated approach to developing research capacity is called for and it is argued that the use of networks would be beneficial in assisting the process.

The librarian as research informationist: a case study

Question:

How can an embedded research informationist add value to the scientific output of research teams?

Setting:

The University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA) Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library is an academic health sciences library serving the clinical, educational, and research needs of the UCLA community.

Methods:

A grant from the National Library of Medicine funded a librarian to join a UCLA research team as an informationist. The informationist meets regularly with the research team and provides guidance related to data management, preservation, and other information-related issues.

Main Results:

Early results suggest that the informationist''s involvement has influenced the team''s data gathering, storage, and curation methods. The UCLA Library has also changed the librarian''s title to research informationist to reflect the new activities that she performs.

Conclusion:

The research informationist role provides an opportunity for librarians to become effective members of research teams and improve research output.     

Building uncommon community with a common book: The role of librarians as collaborators and contributors to campus reading programs

Library involvement with Campus Reading Experiences (CRE) at two community colleges and two 4-year institutions are described. Each chosen case study reflects a strong library presence in institutional level program planning and instructional development for deeper student learning related to the CRE. In particular, the case studies highlight the connections among librarians, student affairs professionals, and academic affairs administrators. Practical suggestions for how librarians can initiate this type of collaboration on their campus as well as advice for how librarians can take a more active role in already existing reading programs are provided.     

The role of the family history in preventive medicine: an introduction for medical librarians.

Health professionals are collecting and charting data about the family history of their patients in order to determine if a predisposition to heart, stroke, cancer and other debilitating conditions can be detected or alleviated through patient education and preventive medicine. Family history-taking for the purposes of preventive medicine is introduced, along with a brief history of the field. The pedigree chart and the genogram are described and their use by health personnel is discussed. A brief search strategy on MEDLINE and a selected bibliography are presented to aid the health sciences librarian to find information on the family history, genograms or pedigree charts.     

Libraries in transition: How librarians in Mongolia are re-visioning the role of libraries in the new democracy,a case study

This paper reports on a study that sought to understand the effects of transition on librarians' perception of their role in Mongolian society. Ten librarians were interviewed by a native Mongolian speaker in the summer of 2006 in Ulaanbaatar. Findings from the study indicate that libraries are emerging from the difficulties of the transition period, which eroded the role of libraries and resulted in declining library services and readership, severely reduced library budgets, the closing of many libraries, and the laying off of hundreds of librarians. In contrast to socialist times, Mongolian librarians currently believe that libraries should respond to the demands of its users, provide proactive information services, and help individuals achieve their own personal goals. The main obstacles they see to achieving the kinds of services they would like to offer are lack of funding, inadequate government policy towards libraries, and centralization of the budget. The librarians have absorbed many of the attitudes prevalent during economic transition to the point where even the language of the market place has permeated library discourse.
