EUROPEAN COLLABORATION IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The article briefly describes the way in which an academic department in a major urban polytechnic in the United Kingdom established a study and research link with a similar departmental a major French university. This first link was a fruitful one which gave rise to other links with other French institutions. The article concludes with a short list of do's and don't's with regard to the establishment of international student exchange and research links among institutions of higher education.

WOMEN IN THE AUSTRIAN UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT

The article begins by presenting some background material on the employment in Austrian universities of women academics, pointing out that progress has been very slow and the way paved with obstacles. A commitment to equal opportunity for women has come from the Austrian Conference of Rectors which has created a working group on equal opportunity for men and women and has engaged the services of two consultants who are specialists in gender equality. Both of them are advising working groups in the various higher education institutions of Austria on the establishment of preferential hiring and promotion schemes for women academics.     

TEACHING YOUTH IN A SOCIALLY TOXIC ENVIRONMENT

The partisan church‐related institution of higher education typically contains a serious internal inconsistency. It attempts not only to fulfill the educational expectations of the general academic culture of the United States, but also the theological expectations of its founding denomination. These two sets of expectations are at odds because they represent incompatible approaches to the acquisition of knowledge, and produce incompatible conceptions of educational diversity, authority, and academic freedom. To rid itself of this inconsistency, the partisan institution must choose to follow either one set of expectations or the other exclusively, or allow the two to exist in tension within one institution.
