I started to feel bored after I got aboard the connecting flight to Vancouver.It would be a 13-hour flight and I was sitting by the aisle,changing the channels on the small TV set mindlessly.There were many options on the TV,you could play games,watch TV shows,listen to music,etc.After quickly browsing through the channels Ⅰ was absorbed in a very hilarious comedy.Soon after the end of the comedy I reclined my seat,leaned against it with a blanket and fell asleep.I had no idea how long I had slept until I was awakened by a nice soft voice from a stewardess:"Mind your head,Miss!" she said.As I began to regain consciousness I jerked back my body,sat upright quickly and realised that my head had leaned sideways so far that the cart couldn't go past."Time for another meal" I thought to myself.A short while after lunch,there came the announcement reminding us of the upcoming landing in Canada.     

A Trip to Qingdao

Last summer,I went to Qingdao with my parents.We took a high-speed rail and after an hour we got to Qingdao.It was a beautiful city.The sky was blue and the air was clean.On the second day after we got to Qingdao,we went to one of the most famous beach1.I was so careless that I lost our camera on the bus.We were very worried,so we got back2the bus station to look for it.To our surprise,we found a young man stand3beside the bus,with our camera in his hand.We were so thankful.

A friend of mine was giving an English lesson to a class of adult who had recently come to live in the United States. After placing quite a number of everyday objects on a table, he asked various members of the class to give him the ruler, the book, the pen and so on. The class went very smoothly and the students seemed interested and serious about the work that they were engaged in until when my friend turned to an Italian student and said,"Give me the keys."The man looked surprised and somewhat at a loss. Seeing this, my friend thought that the student hadn't heard him clearly, so he repeated. "Give me the keys." The Italian shrugged his shoulders. Then, he threw his arms around the teacher's neck and kissed him on both

On a hot summer morning in 1989 I finished packing my things in my flat in Dublin. Two suitcases were not enough to hold them all so I had to use plastic supermarket bags for the remainder. My friend Tom arrived in his car to take me to the airport. After coffee at the airport we shook hands and said goodbye and it was only then that I noticed my hand was shaking. My voice was also shaking and my breath was coming out in uneven waves. Tom was my good friend from schooldays and in saying goodbye to him I was saying goodbye to so many good memories, saying goodbye to my country.     

Using Games for Vocabulary Teaching and Learning

Vocabulary acquisition is increasingly viewed as crucial to language acquisition.Meanwhile,learning vocabulary is often perceived as a tedious and laborious process.Chinese students usually feel bored in vocabulary lessons because they have not changed their learning habits,such as writing word on paper,trying to learn by heart.To help students find vocabulary lessons more interesting,we can use games.This paper analyses the traditional method of teaching vocabulary is not effective,whereas there are some advantages of using games,such as,games bring in fun,games are motivating and create context for language use and then gives two examples of applying games in my vocabulary teaching.Students prefer games and puzzles.Games motivate and entertain students but also help them memorize and recall the material easily.The conclusion is that learning vocabulary through the games is an effective and interesting means which should be used in any classrooms.     

Critical Analysis on Characters of Pearl S.Buck’ the Good Earth

Since the publication of the Good Earth in 1922, Pearl S, Buck published another two novels based on the same theme and they were called the House of Earth Trilogy. The House of Earth Trilogy used as a window to understand China for the westerners at that time. And it had a great impact on the whole world. People gave two different views on her success of winning so many awards. Some thought that she wrote what she knew and her works were based on her own experiences. But others said that she was a foreigner and her values, her distinct aesthetic views would affect her writing. So, some of her depictions, to some extent, were untruthful and distorted. The aim of writing this thesis is to give an objective judgment on the Good Earth, and make it easier for us to communicate with the westerners on literature.     

My Experience Down Under

In August, before the semester began, I went to Beijing to visit some friends that had stopped in China on their way to Brisbane, Australia. My friends were about to spend the next three months on an overseas program in Australia. They suggested that when I had some time off this semester that I should come and visit them. I had always wanted to visit Australia. I figured that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would probably never get an-other chance in my life to visit Australia, and spend it with nine of my best friends.     

If I Were a Teacher

Teachers are just like our parents.They spend much time on our studies.They always want us to learn as much as possible.Because of this,we always have little time to relax. If I were a teacher,I would teach the students how to learn well.If my students made mistakes in my subject,I would not worry much about it.Failure is the mother of success.I would tell them to review what they have learned and find the solutions to the problem.And I won't forget one important thing,that is,if I were a teacher,I would give them less homework.I would give them more free time to relax themselves.     

穿越世纪的DIY——十字绣

I have been cross-sitiching on and off since the late 1970's when I was in middle school. What drew me to learn this handcraft was the simplicity of the art yet the intricate designs that one could create. Learning to corss-stitch is very simple since the basic stitch is making "x's" with colored thread on a piece of fabric. I enjoy the ability to easily take my craft with me on trips for something to do when there is a rest period.The first pieces that I corss-stitched were small single character designs that I was able to make into bookmarks or put into very small frames for on top of a desk. The finished fronts on these pieces turned out looking really good, but the backs looked like an explosion of threads. As I cross-stitched more, I began to learn and understand how to stitch my "x's" so that the backs of my cross-stitched pieces looked almost as neat as the fronts.Now people look at the backs of my pieces and admire how neatly my color changes(start and end of threads).

The Happiest Day

On Mar.22nd,we went to Shuiyun Valley to plant trees with the volunteers of the Lion Club. The ride was about one hour.Unluckily,it began to rain when we got there.The rain got heavier and heavier,so we sheltered ourselves in a tent.Two hours later,the rain stopped,and we were led to a hill. At the foot of the hill were some spades and saplings.We carried them up the hill.They were so heavy that we couldn't walk very fast.Finally,we arrived at the top where a farmer taught us how to plant trees.First,we need to dig a deep hole.Next,put a tree in the hole and make it stand straight,then cover it with soil.I couldn't wait to try,so I picked up a spade and started working.

I remembered losing my father to a sudden car accident a number of years ago.I tried to remain strong through it all.One day,when a song came on the radio that reminded me of my dad,I completely 1)lost it.It was the first time since the 2)funeral that I just 3)let go and cried.It felt good to not 4)hold back anymore.

On Being a Minolity Of One

When I first went to China to teach English I was at a rural school in the south. The closest city was Conghua, with about eighty-five thousand people. I liked to go there on my one day off each week to buy fruit and other things to have in my dorm at the school. Sometimes, I would go with one of the other foreign teachers but many times I would go alone and I would be the only westerner in the city, a minority of one.
