Teaching the Network: A Brief Demonstration of the Internet's Structure for Information Literacy Instruction

A basic understanding of the Internet's physical and operational structure is one element of information literacy. In this article, “traceroute” and “whois” commands are demonstrated as tools that librarians can use to illustrate how the Internet is geographically distributed, how businesses enable and control information sharing, and how to check a source's credibility by determining website ownership. With these tools, students can gain a better understanding of how online information is created, accessed, and affected in ways that may be otherwise invisible.

国家科技信息网络经过两年的发展已经具有一定的规模。但目前我国邮电部门的通信线路费用过高, 影响了科技信息网的进一步应用与发展。国家科委决定建设VSAT 骨干网, 一方面为国家科技信息网络提供通信平台以降低通信费用, 另一方面为国家科委其它的系统和网络提供统一的传输手段。本文从科技信息网络的现状、建网的必要性、组网方式等方面介绍了国家科委VSAT 骨干网的建设。     

The Internet's Value to Catalogers: Results of a Survey

ABSTRACT

Catalogers have been reporting the ways they use the Internet for several years, but as yet there has been little evaluation done to determine for which areas of cataloging the Internet is a valuable tool and for which areas it is not as useful. A survey was conducted in an effort to elicit this information. The responses indicated four areas in which catalogers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloging documentation and publications, and authority work. Some catalogers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient.

The Internet's Impact on Content Utilization Chains: An Exploratory Case Study on Leading Publishers in Germany

The market-side utilization of content is affected by the prevalence of the Internet. However, it is not clear in this context how and to what extent it has changed in detail. Aiming to reveal and evaluate the Internet's impact in the print media industries, we examine the latest enhancement of publishers' content utilization chains. For this purpose, we conduct an exploratory case study and apply time-series analysis as well as cross-case synthesis to analyze the data collected. As unit of analysis, we focus on 3 publishers whose content utilization practices represent best practice in the German newspaper, magazine, and book publishing industries, respectively. Based on the results of the case study, we conclude that the Internet has an impact on the composition of publishers' content utilization chains but to a varying extent. However, because Internet-based content utilization windows hardly generate extra revenues or cannibalize existing ones, publishers' revenue models have not changed significantly so far. Besides, we state that the arrangement of Internet-based content utilization windows, which mostly constitute direct-channel distribution, decisively depends on their relation with print-based ones. Hence, we are able to show that the Internet's impact on publishers' content utilization chains manifests itself in various ways.

The Impact of the Korean Government's Privatization of Korea Telecom (KT) on the Korean Telecommunications Industry: KT's Financial and Operating Performance

Abstract

This article examines the relation between the privatization of state-owned enterprises and the changes in their financial and operating performance through the case study of Korea Telecom (KT), which is the biggest telecommunications (telecom) company in Korea. The Korean government completed the privatization of KT in May 2002, arguing that it would help KT to improve its financial and operating performance, as well as contribute to the development of the telecom industry. This article presents the changes in KT's revenues, assets, net income margins, return on assets, real sales per employee, investments, and dividends to evaluate its financial and operating performance, as well as the impact of the privatization of KT on the Korean telecom industry over the pre- and post-privatization windows.
