The Continuing Digital Divide in the United States

Mapping the digital divide in America is a multifaceted issue; however, the influence of underlying socioeconomic causes, the shift in the conversation to new divides including broadband accessibility and digital literacy, and the importance of the library in narrowing the divide are all prominent points of focus in the literature today. As conversations surrounding the digital divide begin to shift from a divide in access to a divide in skills and/or literacy, attention must be drawn to meeting those needs in equal measure to maintaining access as the primary means of closing the digital divide in America.

This article was written as a result of research carried on by the writer while doing graduate work at Stanford University. In gathering material for the study, Mr. Barber canvassed program managers in New York in the Spring of 1958 and spent an extensive ten‐week internship at KPIX, San Francisco, in the Fall of that year.

E-government research in the United States

The purpose of this exploratory study is to review scholarly publications and assess egovernment research efforts as a field of study specific to the United States e-government environment. Study results reveal that researchers who focus on the U.S. e-government environment assess specific e-government topics at the federal, state, and local levels; however, there are gaps in the research efforts by topic areas and across different levels of government, which indicate opportunities for future areas of research. Results also find that a multitude of methodology approaches are used to assess e-government. Issues, however, exist that include lack of or weak presentations of methodologies in publications, few studies include multi-method evaluation approaches for data collection and analysis efforts, and few studies take a theory-based approach to understanding the U.S. e-government environment.     

Teaching publishing in the United States

What must a college professor know and do in order to teach about the diverse and constantly changing publishing field? The author discusses some theoretical and practical ideas about teaching publishing, including (1) establishing an advisory board of industry leaders; (2) creating a comprehensive publishing curriculum that draws upon the academic resources of other departments and/or schools within a university; (3) recruiting, developing, and maintaining a faculty; (4) developing an effective internship and job placement program; (5) establishing and maintaining contacts with regional and national publishing trade associations; and (6) discussing the need for more scholarly studies on the eclectic international publishing industry.

The Promise of Spanish Publishing in Mexico and the United States

The publishing industry in Mexico is a distinctive environment due to several elements: the role of the State government as the main publisher or buyer of books, the historic and central role of the Spanish publishing industry in the direction and influence of Mexican market through their affiliate companies, and the influence of the US book market concerning influences and trends. In a country of 120 million people, where the book reading rate is very low, as is the number of bookstores, I explore the changes that are taking place right now in the context of the crisis in the Spanish book market and why I see a promising future for the general interest publishing market in the Spanish language in Mexico and the US.

Public Service Broadcasting in the United States

In the past few years, American public broadcasting has faced severe pressures from conservative politicians, the challenge of preparing for new technologies, and fickle audiences. Yet it may be as well-off today as it ever has been, in part because public broadcasting has always been on the margins of American broadcasting. It has been in more parlous circumstances and in fact has certain advantages at this point. Public broadcasting in the United States is not essentially a public service broadcaster, although it sometimes acts as one. It thus has a certain flexibility in a time of great change. American public broadcasting is not a unified structure, but an ad hoc assemblage of stations united both by the fluctuating patronage of the institutions that fund them and in their cultivating the capricious support of the audiences they serve.     

Library technology trends in the United States

The continuing desktop computing revolution, major re‐design and re‐implementation by a number of vendors of integrated library systems, widespread public acceptance and use of the Internet/World‐Wide Web, and the increasing use of the Internet to deliver digital content and access to electronic resources, have all combined to create the need for libraries in the United States to enhance and replace existing systems, networks, and other technologies and to implement new technologies. Libraries planning new network‐centric services face the prospect of overall technology enhancement to optimise service delivery; technology support and staff training and development become critical for successful implementation. This paper reviews the issues that libraries will have to address as they move to the ‘next‐generation’ systems.
