Summary This article presents the Open House as a viable public relations and instruction technique to introduce incoming students to basic library facilities and services in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. An overriding goal of the Open House is to empower participating students with the self-sufficiency skills that will allow them to smoothly navigate the library on their own. Includes a comprehensive blueprint for detailing successes, innovations, and pitfalls. Outlines the specific steps to take regarding fundraising and donation solicitation. Ultimately, an Open House event can strengthen a library's outreach potential; an important-yet often neglected-facet of academic librarianship. 相似文献

ABSTRACTResearcher services have proliferated in recent years and numerous free or fee-based sites now promise increased visibility and impact for authors or contributors of publications and other research products. Not all services have the same goals, however, and it can be difficult to know with which services researchers should engage. In this article we establish three categories (author/researcher identification, academic/professional networking, and reference/citation management) and examine nineteen services that fit into those categories.Column Editor's Note This JLA column posits that academic libraries and their services are dominated by information technologies, and that the success of librarians and professional staff is contingent on their ability to thrive in this technology-rich environment. The column will appear in odd-numbered issues of the journal, and will delve into all aspects of library-related information technologies and knowledge management used to connect users to information resources, including data preparation, discovery, delivery and preservation. Prospective authors are invited to submit articles for this column to the editor at kenning.arlitsch@montana.edu 相似文献

Abstract CASA is a project to develop a European metacatalog of serials and articles for both professional users (such as ISSN centers, bibliographic agencies, union catalogs, libraries, and publishers) and end users. The ISSN network will be the nucleus of the project, with ISSN centers being able to take advantage of telematic applications to exchange data, but union catalogs will also benefit. Moreover, users will be able to access a serials services directory, allowing them to find articles and supplying them with value-added data. 相似文献

Charles Winick 《广播与电子媒介杂志》2013,57(2):129-142
Although stations, networks and advertisers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on various rating services and audience measurement surveys, they often overlook a gold mine of voluntarily submitted feedback from their audience: the fan letter. It is true that the “pan” letter condemning a program often gets inordinate attention on decision‐making levels, but the run‐of‐the‐mill fan letter, if properly analyzed, can provide a wealth of information about the effect of a program upon its audience. Charles Winick is author of Taste and the Censor in Television (an Occasional Paper for the Fund for the Republic) and numerous articles in publications dealing with the mass media, such as Gazette, and the Journal op Broadcasting (“Censor and Sensibility,” Spring, 1962). Dr. Winick is a research psychologist and children's television program consultant at NBC who has taught and conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University and New York University. 相似文献

Abstract Welcome to the new “Best of the Literature” column of Public Services Quarterly. Every issue of this column will provide a survey of the best of the recent library literature either on a particular topic within public services (as with this first column on services to distance learners) or on public services broadly conceived. I hope that this column can highlight library literature that deserves to be read by every public services librarian. Ideally, readers of the column and I will collaborate to select the best of the literature. In that spirit, suggestions for great articles or special topics are always welcome. 相似文献
