Political broadcast advertising and primary election voting

The following three part debate is in response to the article “Functionalism and the Mass Media,” which appeared in 19:11–22. Dr. Pryluck is associate professor in the Department of Radio, Television and Motion Pictures at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Anderson directs the Broadcast Research Center at Ohio University, and Dr. Meyer is a member of the communications faculty at the University of Massachusetts.     

Missing the newscaster: Reactions to the 1967 AFTRA strike

The following study reports viewer reactions to missing network news anchormen, and concludes the strike and substitute newsmen had little effect on viewing habits. Dr. Lawrence W. Lichty is associate professor of communication arts at the University of Wisconsin in Madison while Dr. David J. LeRoy is assistant professor of speech at Florida State University. This study was accomplished with the aid of funds provided by the Computer Center and Graduate School at Wisconsin.     

A newcomer looks at the broadcast curriculum controversy

The following article was also written in response to Dr. John Penny‐backer's article, “Working with Universities” that appeared recently in the Journal of Broadcasting. This reply is intended to present the point of view of a relative newcomer to the position of “teacher of broadcasting.” This point of view is quite different from that of Dr. Pennybacker, who now holds dual positions as Executive Secretary of the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters and Assistant Professor of Speech at Louisiana State University. Evaluation of television drama: Interaction of acting styles and shot selection

That television is basically a low‐key and close‐up medium is demonstrated in the following research undertaken by two members of the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences of Queens College, City University of New York. Alan H. Wurtzel is an instructor at Queens while working on a doctorate at New York University. Dr. Joseph R. Dominick is assistant professor and holds the Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Both authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of their colleague, Dr. Gary Gumpert.     

Why adults do or do not watch educational television

The reasons given for watching or not watching educational television have a great deal of bearing upon why people attend to commercial television as well. The following study was the pilot for a series being conducted by the Institute for Communication Research at Stanford University for the National Educational Television and Radio Center. The study was planned by Dr. Wilbur Schramm and the author, with the. latter supervising the field work and analysis. Dr. Lyle is presently assistant professor of Journalism at the University of California, Los Angeles.     

In Memoriam Dr. Viktor Koressaar(1916–2002)

ABSTRACT

Dr. Viktor Koressaar, the former head of the Slavic and Baltic Division at the New York Public Library, died on October 25, 2002. Dr. Koressaar was also an active participant in various cultural activities of the Estonian exile communities in North America and Sweden. The article tells of some of his life experiences and a few of his publications.     

News Talk: Investigating the Language of Journalism

The “topless radio”; phenomenon was briefly widespread— and controversy about such formats continues to appear. This article reviews two important FCC decisions, Sonderling (WGLD‐FM), and Pacifica (WBAI‐FM), to discern and describe FCC policy trends and attempts to define just what obscenity and indecency is and what standards for broadcasting should exist. Dr. Feldman is on the speech faculty at Denison University (Ohio), while Dr. Tickton teaches mass communication and speech at, respectively, Norfolk State College and Old Dominion University, both in Virginia.     

Broadcasting in industrially‐developed nations: An annotated bibliography

Dr. Browne is a long‐time member of the speech‐communication faculty at the University of Minnesota, and has often contributed to the Journal in the past, usually on foreign and international broadcasting topics.     

Imagery of women in television drama: 1974

Taking up a somewhat differing point of view in this dialogue which began on page 259 is Dr. Seggar, a member of the sociology faculty at Brigham Young University in Provo, and a previous Journal contributor.     

Defamation and disclosure: A broadcast precedent for state shield laws

The following report which explores the possibility of state action on the newsmen's privilege controversy, is from the author's 1973 Ph.D. dissertation completed at the University of Iowa. Dr. Sadowski, is on the communication faculty at Florida Atlantic University.     

The FCC's disposition of “fairness doctrine” complaints

How the FCC actually handles “Fairness Doctrine”; complaints was the topic of Bradley Canon's 1967 Ph.D. dissertation, completed in the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Canon currently is assistant professor of political science at the University of Kentucky.     

Effects of music on source evaluations

Dr. Simpkins is an assistant professor in the department of advertising at Michigan State University, while Mr. Smith is a media analyst at Campbell‐Ewald, Inc. in Detroit. The research that follows offers some useful advice to producers of commercials and other material using a musical background.     

The effect on parental buying habits of children exposed to children's television programs

Few Americans are familiar with the financial structure of commercial television in Great Britain. This article is intended to illuminate the sometimes tortured fiscal relationships between ITA, the programme contractors, and the British government. Dr. Mayer, an independent television consultant, is assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle.

Who's next?: The retreat of canon 35

Significantly, most of the debate on Canon 35 has ignored the opinions of those who are expected to follow its dictates—members of the legal fraternity itself. To find out what judges and attorneys actually thought of broadcasting of trials became the concern of Dr. Sherman P. Lawton of the University of Oklahoma more than a year ago. Although the bar groups have at times surveyed their members with respect to the Canon, this was probably the first statewide study of its kind. Here Dr. Lawton reports on the results of the study in light of recent court developments.     

The Moody Medical Library and its historical relevance

The historical development of the Medical Branch Library from the Medical Department of Soulé University, established in 1861, to the present is traced. The powerful growth stimulus that was provided by Dr. Chauncey Leake is recognized as is the important influence more recently of Dr. Truman G. Blocker, Jr. The new Moody Medical Library Building and the services and financing of the library are described.

The following, a rebuttal to Prof. Spitzer's “Mass Media vs. Personal Sources of Information about the Presidential Assassination: A Comparison of Six Investigations,” should be read in connection with the preceding article.
