Social support matters: longitudinal effects of social support on three dimensions of school engagement from middle to high school

This study examined the relative influence of adolescents' supportive relationships with teachers, peers, and parents on trajectories of different dimensions of school engagement from middle to high school and how these associations differed by gender and race or ethnicity. The sample consisted of 1,479 students (52% females, 56% African American). The average growth trajectories of school compliance, participation in extracurricular activities, school identification, and subjective valuing of learning decreased from 7th to 11th grades (mean ages = 12.9 years to 17.2 years). Different sources of social support were not equally important in their impact on school engagement, and the effect of these sources differed by the aspect of engagement studied. For instance, peer social support predicted adolescents' school compliance more strongly and school identification less strongly than teacher social support.     

Latent profile analysis of students’ reading development and the relation of cognitive variables to reading profiles

Previous studies have showed that early problems with word decoding can lead to poor performance in text reading and comprehension and suggest that poor readers often struggle with reading deficits throughout their school years. Therefore, early detection of those children who are at risk for slow reading development and/or who belong to the lowest reading profiles is essential in order to organize proper support. The present study explores the heterogeneity and prevalence of latent reading profiles among 769 Finnish- and German-reading students during their first and second school years in three countries (Finland, Germany, and Italy) using latent profile analysis. The results identified three latent profiles among Finnish readers, one of which (sentence-level reading) was identified as developing slowly. Among German-reading students, four latent profiles were discovered, two of which were identified as developing slowly. The results of ordinal logistic regression modeling show that rapid automatic naming (RAN) was significantly related to poorer reading profiles among Finnish- and German-reading students, and that the poorer results in letter-sound connection testing among the German-reading group was also significantly related to poorer reading profiles. Although the educational systems have some differences between Germany and German-speaking areas of Italy, no significant country effect was detected. In addition, a child’s age and spoken language did not significantly affect the student’s reading profile.

少年儿童领悟社会支持量表的编制

为编制适合我国少年儿童领悟社会支持测试的量表,在借鉴国内外相关量表和进行开放式问卷调查的基础上编制问卷,应用对1261名中小学生的调查数据进行探索性因素分析和验证性因素分析,并分析量表的信效度.结果发现少年儿童领悟社会支持包括家庭支持、同伴支持、学校支持3个正向支持因素和欺负与歧视1个负向支持因素,共4个因素.验证性因素分析结果表明4个因素模型拟合较好.量表的α信度系数为0.748,重测信度0.933,效度较高.结论:所编制的量表具有良好的信度和效度,可用于少年儿童领悟社会支持的测试.

Measuring perceived social support: Development of the child and adolescent social support scale (CASSS)

The measurement of students' social support has become a popular topic in education and psychology, yet measurement tools in this area are limited. In this study, we use a large, representative sample to conduct confirmatory factor, reliability, and correlational analyses of scores on the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS; Malecki, Demaray, Elliott, & Nolten, 1999). These analyses revealed evidence of reliability, a four‐factor structure (Parent, Teacher, Classmate, and Close Friend subscales), and construct validity. The results of this study indicate that the CASSS covaries as predicted with the clinically important constructs of self‐concept, social skills, and behavioral indicators. There is evidence that the CASSS can be used to understand children and adolescents' perceived social support. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

大学生社会公德意识缺失与对策

社会公德是人们在公共生活中应当遵守的基本道德要求。作为最低层次的道德要求,社会公德在任何时代、任何社会都是至关重要的。当代大学生的社会公德意识的主流是健康和积极向上的,但是在目前复杂的环境中,一部分大学生社会公德意识不强,出现了一些违背社会公德的现象,其原因是多方面的,既有学校教育体制的因素,也有社会因素,同时也与大学生自身因素有很大关系。针对这种情况,我们必须采取相关措施,加强大学生的社会公德意识。     

Influential factors for knowledge creation practices of CTE teachers: mutual impact of perceived school support, transformational leadership, and work engagement

This study examined the structural relationships among perceived school support, transformational leadership, teachers’ work engagement, and teachers’ knowledge creation practices. It also investigated the mediating effects of transformational leadership and work engagement in explaining the association between perceived school support and knowledge creation practices. Samples included 284 career and technical education teachers in the United States. Structural equation modeling was employed. Perceived school support was positively associated with transformational leadership and teachers’ work engagement, but had no direct impact on knowledge creation practices. Transformational leadership was found to affect knowledge creation practices, but not work engagement of teachers. Although a supportive school climate had no direct relationship with knowledge creation practices, it indirectly affected this outcome variable through transformational leadership and teachers’ work engagement. The results suggest that in order to increase teachers’ knowledge creation activities, a supportive school climate should be provided with efforts to improve teachers’ work engagement and transformational behaviors of the principal.

Sources of social support among school counsellors in Jordan and its relationship to burnout

This study aimed at investigating which source of social support (supervisors, colleagues, friends, spouse, family) would be most effective in reducing burnout among school counsellors. A sample of 90 counsellors (47 males and 43 females) completed Burnout and Source of Social Support questionnaires. Pearson correlation coefficients and ANOVA were employed to analyze data. Results revealed significant positive correlations between family support, colleague support, and personal accomplishment. Demographic variables: sex, age, marital status, and counselling experience were not significantly related to any of the three burnout dimensions. Results were interpreted and implications for counselling were suggested.

The relationship between perceived social support and maladjustment for students at risk

This study examines the relationship between adolescents' (N = 125) perceived social support and self‐reported (mal)adjustment indicators in a sample of predominantly at risk: Hispanic students in an urban middle school. The instruments used to collect data were the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (Malecki, Demaray, & Elliott, 2000) and the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Self Report of Personality (Reynolds & Kamphaus, 1998). Results indicated significant relationships in the expected direction between overall social support and clinical and school (mal)adjustment indicators. Parent and classmate support were most strongly related to clinical and interpersonal indicators whereas parent, teacher, and school support were related to school‐related indicators. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Making the connection: The role of social and academic school experiences in students' emotional engagement with school in post-secondary vocational education

This study examines the emotional engagement with school of a diverse sample of 909 students in post-secondary vocational education in the Netherlands. Using multilevel regression analysis, we assess the role of students' background characteristics and school experiences, and their interaction, in students' emotional engagement with school. At-risk students do not report lower levels of emotional engagement, except for students using (soft)drugs. While Dutch dropout prevention focuses on fostering a sense of belonging through enhancing teacher–student relationships, we do not find a significant role of perceived support from school staff in students' sense of belonging. A good relationship with classmates is more important to engage students in post-secondary vocational education. Perceiving an academic fit is most prominently related to the emotional engagement of vocational students, indicating that a sense of belonging should not only be defined in social, but also in academic terms.
