Studies on Wetland Biodiversity in China

This paper briefly summarizes the history of wetland research, the evolvement of wetland science, and their impacts on the understanding of wetland biodiversity in China. A marsh is the key type and basic component of a wetland. Defining the marsh and wetland plants is the basis for understanding the wetland and its biodiversity. The comprehensive multiple factorial classification principles and the multiple developmental models of the wetland are two innovative feats achieved by Chinese scientists, and their application has further promoted ecological research. The CAS Wetland Research Center has made historic contributions to the study of the wetland and its biodiversity in China. Also, the paper discusses several important tasks of wetland and biodiversity research.

Relationship between Water and Vegetation in the Ejina Delta

Water is the foundation of an arid ecological system, as the quantity and quality of surface water and groundwater determine its structure and function. The study on the relationship between water and ecosystem is the basis of ecosystem protection. Taking the Ejina delta, an extremely arid area located downstream of the Heihe River in northwestern China, as an example, this article gives an overviewe of the study in three aspects: (1) the groundwater table and salinity dynamics and their driving factors, (2) the groundwater depth and salt threshold of natural vegetation ecosystem, and (3) the impact evaluation of ecological flow control on Ejina natural vegetation. The authors point out the importance of the research into the relation between water and ecosystem and its key difficulties and weakness, and put forward strategies for promoting the study processes.     

MPS／CAS Partner Group on Cosmology

The Partner Group does research in cosmology, focussing on the quantitative modeling of the structure and evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, the pattern of galaxies and of larger structures. The usual approach in this field is the dark matter paradigm, i.e. the assumption that the basic structures are laid out in a matter component of particles which interact only gravitationally. Numerical simulations of large scale and high resolution are used to follow the evolution of condensations of dark matter particles during cosmological evolution. Analytic models and detailed statistical investigations of astronomical data sets supplement the numerical work.     

Public Understanding of and Attitudes towards Science ＆ Technology in China

Re-establishing Evolutionary Relationships of Alpinia Plants

With 230 species throughout tropical and subtropical Asia, Alpinia is the largest, most widespread and most taxonomically complex genus in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Species of Alpinia often predominate in the understory of forests, and some of them are important ornamentals and medicinals. By using DNA-sequence-based methods, Prof. Li Qingjun from the CASXishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden and his collaborators from the US National Museum of Natural History and UK Royal Botanic Garden have set up the monophyly of the genus. Their work is highlighted on the cover of the first issue of American Journal of Botany in 2005.     

Pioneers in Cooperation （selection）

Project-oriented cooperation within the framework of the CAS-MPSagreement began in the early 1980s. Its methods differed according to scientific needs and included workshops and seminars, field research, overland expeditions, exchanges of materials and samples, and the training of young scientists and engineers. The German Research Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China provided special funding for many of these projects.     

International Cooperation Advances Internationalization

International scientific cooperation continues to successfully promote the development of research and the quality of researchers inChina, and also the internationalization of China‘s research system and research organizations. An outstanding example of this is the 30 years of fruitful cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Society.

With a review of the evolution of the theory of hermeneutics, this paper raises the problem of knowledge gap in information communication, and from the viewpoint of hermeneutics, analyzes its crux and key issues to be resolved. It further discusses the cognitive viewpoints in information studies, compares them with the text receiving theory and stresses the positions and roles of information users as the main part in information communication. Finally, it concludes that the inevitability and impoaance of using hermeneutics to study information communication deserves to be studied and practiced in depth and breadth.

Earth Observations in China and the World： History and Development in 50 Years
