Advancing nursing students' transition to scholarship: embedding a librarian into the Advanced Nursing Research course

Background:Nursing students often prioritize learning clinical skills rather than research skills, possibly inhibiting their growth as scholars. Supporting nursing students'' learning of information literacy skills has been shown to impact nurses'' involvement with research after graduation. This suggests a need for developing innovative information literacy teaching strategies that can enable nursing students to better understand the process of research and how to apply research to practice.Case Presentation:This article describes the implementation of the embedded librarian project at the course level at the University of Memphis. A librarian was integrated into the Advanced Nursing Research course, a semester-long course for graduate nursing students, for the fall 2020 semester. This case shares the embedded librarian project''s implementation and evaluation strategies.Conclusions:The embedded librarian project aided students'' acquisition of information literacy skills at the University of Memphis. Students reported that the embedded librarian project helped them complete assignments for their research course. Using an embedded librarian service within the graduate nursing curricula model may enhance scholarship among future nurses.     

An Assessment of the Lasting Effects of a Stand-Alone Information Literacy Course: The Students' Perspective

The authors wished to measure the degree to which a library information literacy course establishes a foundation for life-long learning. A web-based survey was administered to 2147 currently-matriculating Louisiana State University students who had taken the one-credit information literacy course, Library and Information Science (LIS) 1001 (Research Methods and Materials). Though the response rate was relatively low, the survey revealed clear evidence that students continue to use the materials and skills taught in the course throughout their college careers for both course work and personal research.     

Integrating information literacy into an undergraduate geography research methods course

Conducting research is a challenging but essential component of an undergraduate geography education. Students typically need instruction in fundamental skills such as using library resources. In this study we describe how we, a geography professor and a librarian, integrated information literacy into a newly revised course in which geography students design and write a research prospectus. We assessed student knowledge and self-reported confidence in library research skills at the beginning and completion of the course. This study describes increased information literacy among students who entered the course with a range of abilities and offers areas for further research.

Collaborative Learning in an Information Literacy Course: The Impact of Online Versus Face-to-face Instruction on Social Metacognitive Awareness

Metacognition and social metacognition play important roles in information literacy, online learning, and collaborative learning. This study examines how students rated themselves in both metacognitive and social metacognitive awareness after a collaborative project in an information literacy course offered face-to-face and online. Students in the face-to-face version of the course rated themselves as having higher social metacognitive awareness, though metacognitive awareness scores were similar. Because of this finding, this article makes recommendations for improving collaboration online for information literacy instruction.

Serving as an Educator: A Southern Case in Embedded Librarianship

This is a case study at Mississippi State University where a business librarian taught a one-credit financial literacy course for undergraduate freshmen during the 2010 Fall term. In this case, the librarian acted as a faculty teacher and an instructional librarian to teach the students financial literacy as well as information literacy. The course curriculum was embedded with a library orientation to introduce the library services. Pre- and post-course assessments were conducted to analyze the students’ learning level in financial knowledge and the level of familiarity with various library services.     

Enhancing Information Literacy for Preservice Elementary Teachers: A Case Study from the United States

Through this study, a librarian and faculty team aimed to determine the extent to which a one-credit information literacy course deepened preservice teachers' understanding of information literacy. We employed a treatment and control group design; treatment participants received 15 hours of information literacy instruction while control participants received no direct information literacy instruction. Data sources included a questionnaire and think-aloud cognitive tasks. Analysis revealed that the one-credit course was insufficient for deepening preservice teachers' information literacy skills, leading to recommendations to enhance and expand instruction and recommendations for future study. Preparing teachers with effective information literacy skills who are also equipped to instruct youth to navigate the challenges of 21st Century information literacy is an important endeavor that requires collaboration and continuous assessment.     

面向学生成功的大学生信息素养评估实证研究

[目的/意义]探索如何在《高等教育信息素养框架》的指导下,开展面向学生成功的大学生信息素养评估工作。[方法/过程]通过嵌入创新项目的信息素养课程开展实证研究,从信息素养思维观念和实践能力两个层面分3个角度在时间维度和质量维度上进行评估,采集创新项目过程信息素养思维观念变化、实践能力评估及创新项目过程后个人信息素养实践能力评估数据。[结果/结论]研究显示嵌入创新项目的信息素养评估起到了两方面作用：一是通过评估促进学生信息素养思维观念转变和实践能力提升,培养元认知能力;二是评估能有效分析面向学生成功的信息素养教育成效,展示图书馆对学生成功的贡献度。     

大学生信息素养调研——基于沈阳药科大学的调查

文章以问卷的形式对沈阳药科大学各年级学生的信息素养情况进行了调研,并运用SPSS对调研数据进行统计学分析,得出信息素养各层面密切相关,信息素养具有显著的年级、专业差异性,是否学过文检课亦对信息素养总体情况产生显著影响的结论,并在此基础上提出了与专业教育相融合,进行年级、专业差别化信息素养教育;以文献检索课为核心,完善信息素养课程体系建设;提高认识,从国家层面加强对信息素养教育的监督与管理等建议。     

高校图书馆开展信息素养教育课程思政的路径与模式探索——以福建农林大学图书馆为例

[目的/意义] 以福建农林大学图书馆信息素养教育课程思政改革为例,探讨课程思政与信息素养教育融合的路径与模式。[方法/过程] 在厘清课程思政、信息素养教育课程特点等问题的基础上,通过文献调研掌握国内信息素养教育课程思政的研究现状,以福建农林大学图书馆信息素养教育课程思政改革为例,探索思政元素融入信息素养教育的路径和模式,反思课程思政改革过程中教师队伍建设、教材建设以及教学质量评价等问题。[结果/结论] 从嵌入式、支撑式和协同式3个方面探索信息素养教育课程思政的路径。归纳总结3种信息素养教育课程思政模式：模式一,新媒体技术应用法;模式二：案例教学法;模式三：项目教学法。信息素养教育课程思政改革的关键是教师,基础是教材建设,动力是教学评价。     

2000年以来国内信息素质研究综述

在分析2000年以来我国信息素质研究著述的基础上,从信息素质概念、信息素质评价标准、信息素质教育、国外信息素质研究等方面阐述新千年以来我国信息素质的研究现状。指出在信息素质评价标准方面有诸多有益尝试,但还未形成权威的评价体系,在信息素质教育理论和实践研究方面有长足进展,但文献检索教材未能紧跟时代发展,在线信息素质教育还未形成自己特色。     

Web 2.0 and Information Literacy Instruction: Aligning Technology with ACRL Standards

The purpose of this article is to report on how Web 2.0 tools in an online information literacy instruction course aligned with ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. A qualitative case study was undertaken on an online graduate course related to information literacy instruction. Data collected included: course activities, assignments, emails, online discussions, and surveys. The educational theory of constructivism and its adherence to reflection, active learning, and social interaction was used to find patterns in the data. Activity theory provided a framework for data analysis and interpretation related to the patterns of activities that took place while students used each Web 2.0 tool. Web 2.0 was found to enhance all five information literacy standards. These standards related to collaboration, information organization, creativity, discussion, and technology education.     

The Critical Inquiry Imperative: Information Literacy and Critical Inquiry as Complementary Concepts in Higher Education

Sharing a variety of characteristics and theories, critical inquiry and information literacy have the potential to complement one another in a higher education setting. This article explores an initiative at the University of South Carolina Aiken to help students with their critical thinking and reasoning skills through the implementation of a new, one-credit, freshman seminar course. The class, entitled Critical Inquiry, would address three student learning outcomes, including one directed at information literacy. A case study of how the initiative was implemented is discussed.     

Information Literacy in Pre-Service Teacher Education

Abstract

This annotated bibliography presents a review of articles published on the topic of information literacy in teacher education since the late 1980s. Many of the articles outline concerns about pre-service teachers who graduate with insufficient information literacy skills, who are unprepared to teach these skills to their future students, and who do not understand the role of the school librarian as an instructional collaborator. On the other hand, many articles describe innovative and successful programs where exposure to librarians, integration of information literacy instruction, attention to library research, or introduction of a process approach to information use can produce new teachers who are equipped to collaborate with school librarians and to teach information literacy skills to their students.     

国内外信息素质教育网站的信息评价标准比较研究

[目的/意义] 信息评价能力是信息素质不可或缺的重要组成部分,但在国内的文献检索课中却往往缺失或体现不够。对国内外信息素质教育网站的信息评价标准进行比较研究,有利于对信息评价的方法进行深入探讨,对课堂教学也会起到重要的借鉴作用。[方法/过程]在对国内外比较有影响的开放式信息素质教育网站的信息评价内容进行调研的基础上,对国内外相关网站中信息评价标准的总体特点进行比较分析。[结果/结论]对国内信息素质教育网站中关于信息评价内容提出如下思考和建议:信息评价能力应得到进一步重视;信息素质教育网站的引导、示范作用应得到进一步加强;评价标准的差异性的巧妙利用可提高实体教学的效果;国内信息素质教育网站信息评价内容在内容厚度、意识培养、解读力度、习题配备诸方面有待改进。     

Embedding General Education Competencies into an Online Information Literacy Course

ABSTRACT

Assessing core competencies for students who are enrolled in purely online programs poses a challenge to colleges and universities. Our institution has chosen an existing online information literacy course to incorporate and assess general education competencies for an overseas cohort of transfer students. This article presents a brief overview of the course and describes the way in which the course was redesigned to embed and assess the five general education competencies (critical thinking, information literacy, critical reading, quantitative reasoning, and writing).

Integrating Information Literacy into an Online Undergraduate Nursing Informatics Course: The Librarian's Role in the Design and Teaching of the Course

ABSTRACT

Integration of information literacy as a core component into a new online undergraduate nursing course proved to be a learning experience in course design and teaching. This article describes the framework for the course design that combined cultural competency, informatics, and information literacy and was grounded in informatics competencies for nurses at the beginning level, an informatics textbook, and the Neurnan Systems Model. The librarian's role in this process and the information literacy unit's content and written assignment are detailed, and challenges in the collaboration are also addressed.
