Designing User-Centered Discovery and Access Services for Enhanced Virtual User Experience

In 2010, the Technical Services Department at the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries established its top strategic direction to understand users’ workflows and strive to build seamless information access services around their workflows. To advance this strategic direction, an innovative reorganization was implemented within Technical Services by creating a new Knowledge Access and Discovery (KAD) Librarian position and forming a new Design and Discovery (DD) department from existing staff. In this session, the presenters discussed the shift to user-centered services, the roles of the KAD Librarian and the new DD department, their projects and initiatives, and how they work with the library-wide cross-departmental Virtual User Experience Committee to meet the Internet-fueled do-it-yourself (DIY) mindset of today’s library users.     

Improving Library Resource Discovery: Exploring the Possibilities of VuFind and Web-Scale Discovery

Like many libraries, the Bridge Consortium (the shared library of Carleton College and St. Olaf College) had outgrown the existing catalog and needed to find an improved search interface for collections. Seeking something that would work with the existing Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Millennium integrated library system, researchers explored everything from catalog enhancements provided by Innovative Interfaces to a completely separate, Web-scale discovery tool. For the past year, they worked to implement VuFind as a catalog overlay, continually customizing and enhancing it based on user feedback. At the same time, they continued to research a broader solution and recommended a discovery tool to their consortium leadership group that they believe will redefine student research at their colleges and give new shape and direction to their consortium. By thinking of discovery as more than a product and staggering their implementation, they were better able to meet their consortium's needs. This article details their evaluation process and provides reflection on the decisions made. Many libraries are considering Web-scale discovery products. As part of the process, they confront questions about open source tools, Web site redesigns, incorporating user feedback, and consortial needs. The researchers hope to contribute to these libraries' processes by outlining their process and considerations, and what they learned along the way to arrive at their current solution.

[目的/意义] 以国家自然科学基金基础知识库建设为例,为国内资助与研究机构建设开放获取知识库提供参考经验。[方法/过程] 全面调研国内外开放获取知识库平台技术、功能、服务与发展,详细介绍项目建设平台选型、架构设计、关键技术实现、界面设计、元数据标准、数据清洗、运行情况等研究成果与实践经验。[结果/结论] 总结项目建设经验,为资助与研究机构建设开放获取知识库提供有价值的研究与建设参考经验,推动公共资助机构投资所产生的知识普惠社会,促进社会创新发展。     

Research Collaborations Between Public and Academic Libraries

Web-scale discovery systems are gaining momentum among academic libraries as libraries seek a means to provide their users with a one-stop searching experience. Illinois State University's Milner Library found itself in the unique position of having access to two distinct discovery products, EBSCO Discovery Service and Serials Solutions’ Summon. Two researchers at Milner conducted a usability study for the former product in 2010, and now two other researchers, including one involved with the EBSCO Discovery Service study, have conducted the same study on the latter product. The goals of the study were twofold: first, to identify user behavior while using discovery systems’ search features and to see whether using these features would improve the user's searching experience, and second, to compare user experiences with EBSCO Discovery Service and Summon at Illinois State University. The similarities and differences in user expectations, use, manipulation, and satisfaction with both discovery tools are explored in this article, with the ancillary hope that libraries investigating discovery tools might be able to make a more thoroughly informed choice in acquiring their own Web-scale discovery system.     

Evaluation of a Resource Discovery Service: FindIt@Bham

In autumn 2012, the University of Birmingham launched FindIt@Bham, a Primo-based Resource Discovery Service, after a series of focus groups with students and staff to help determine its initial configuration and customization. This article presents the results from a large-scale online survey and focus groups that were conducted to poll users’ attitudes to the service over twelve months later, adding to a small body of research on user satisfaction with established resource discovery services. From the survey the overall level of appreciation was high with 71.13% rating FindIt@Bham to be “Good” or “Very Good.” The level of appreciation was compared across undergraduates, postgraduates (taught and research), and academic staff which revealed that undergraduates are the group of users most happy with the service with academic staff being least satisfied. The reasons for this discrepancy are considered, along with users’ behavior and a discussion of their perceptions of individual functional areas. The survey results led to focus group activities tailored to extract deeper information on system usage and satisfaction. From these combined activities, future customizations and developments to FindIt@Bham such as tuning of result relevancy, improved online help, and additional functionality can be prioritized.

通过问卷调查了解我国科研人员对学术信息资源开放获取的参与现状及影响因素等,在此基础上,主要从科研人员整体及有参与经历的科研人员两个角度,根据影响较大的因素分析科研人员参与开放获取的主要推动力,包括:保证科研人员对OA有足够的认知程度,建设具权威性和影响力的OA资源,保持OA出版模式的优势,避免知识产权纠纷,将OA资源纳入学术评价体系,对OA期刊投稿提供经费支持。     

The Forecast for Special Libraries

ABSTRACT

Special libraries exist in an ecosystem consisting of the information industry, the library world, their own organizations, and workforce demographics. Librarians need to be aware of the trends shaping all of these facets. This column takes a close look at Outsell's Information Industry Outlook report for 2016 and its implications for special libraries. The outlook for special libraries is neither the previously forecast Baby Boomer retirement crisis nor the dire end of special libraries many feared during the recent recession. Instead, the special library world is transforming, creating both challenges and opportunities for special librarians. Millennials entering both the workforce at large and the library workforce will make their presence known. Savvy information professionals will stay on top of these trends and find their niche, whether in a traditional physical library or in emerging careers outside the library.

Column Editor’s NoteSpecial libraries share concerns with their more general academic, public, and school counterparts, but they also have unique characteristics and concerns which merit separate consideration. Libraries of all types are evolving, and just as special libraries can learn from the general literature on libraries, practitioners in all types of libraries can learn from the experiences and best practices of special libraries. “The Specialist,” appearing in even-numbered issues of this journal, addresses the administrative concerns of special libraries. The column's scope is a broad umbrella of specialized librarianship and includes corporate, non-profit, government, and independent libraries as well as the specialized departments and branches of academic and public libraries. The Public Knowledge Project and the Simon Fraser University Library: A Partnership in Open Source and Open Access

The Public Knowledge Project is an ongoing collaboration between academics, librarians, publishers, editors, and software developers, working together to build alternatives in scholarly publishing. The project has developed a suite of open source software that significantly reduces the time and expense required for producing academic journals and conferences, and facilitates making research results freely available through open access. This article examines the history of the project, provides an overview of its open source software, discusses the growing community participating in the project, and considers its future directions.     

可穿戴设备对用户信息搜索行为的影响研究

[目的/意义]基于可穿戴设备的特性,研究可穿戴设备的特性对用户的信息搜索行为的影响问题,为推广发展可穿戴设备的信息搜索服务提供理论依据。[方法/过程]通过分析已有的信息搜索行为理论和模型,进而构建可穿戴设备对用户信息搜索行为的影响模型并提出相应的假设,采用问卷调查的方法并通过数据统计分析验证模型假设。[结果/结论]数据检验发现模型中提出的假设均成立,即可穿戴设备所具有的4个特性对用户的信息搜索行为均有着正向的促进作用。     

Scientific Communication in the Developing World in an Open Access Mode: The SciELO Model

[Abstract） This paper introduces the Scientific Electronic Library Online （SciELO） program and its three main objectives. Then the paper presents the methodology of open access to scientific information by the SciELO. At last, it shows the perspectives of open access in developing countries.

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the Pratt Institute located in Manhattan and offering LIS education since 1890, features a curriculum based on Cultural Informatics and World Information, Society & Environments (WISE). The program reflects the arts orientation of Pratt and its alliance with cultural institutions in the city such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and the Brooklyn Museum. 移动图书馆WAP和APP用户检索行为比较分析

[目的/意义] 对比用户在使用WAP和APP这两种方式访问移动图书馆时的检索行为,为移动图书馆的服务创新提供参考。[方法/过程] 通过对某高校图书馆OPAC系统移动端日志数据进行统计分析,从搜索会话、查询式、高频关键词以及检索方式等方面展开研究。[结果/结论] 发现用户更多地是使用WAP访问移动图书馆,相比之下,在使用APP访问移动图书馆时,用户更倾向于在短时间内进行较少的查询来结束搜索会话;使用这两种方式查询的高频关键词所属领域有很大的相似性,中文检索多集中在数学、管理学、经济学、社会学等领域;简单检索是用户访问移动图书馆时使用的主要检索方式,通过WAP访问的用户选择其他检索方式的比率要大于通过APP访问的用户。     

开放资源许可使用的权益平衡规范:NISO ALI解读

[目的/意义]系统介绍美国NISO推荐实施规程ALI的背景、内容、应用及其在开放获取信息交流模式中的作用和影响。[方法/过程]通过翻译ALI的内容,解读其作为一套完整的标准化元数据在为开放获取资源提供可视化标识,在促使用户及时了解某一特定内容的开放状态和再利用权限,以及平衡出版商、作者、下游用户之间权益方面的作用。[结果/结论]ALI对我国构建统一的、标准化的开放资源元数据元素,同时对消除作者的版权顾虑,平衡各方利益,消除其中的法律风险有着重要的借鉴意义,可促进我国开放获取运动规范化发展。
