Assessing knowledge skills in the NHS: a training needs analysis approach

This feature discusses the use of a training needs analysis exercise carried out by library staff at the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) Library Network to support the development of a fit for purpose programme of information skills training. A survey was designed based on a well‐known information skills competency framework and used to gain an understanding of the knowledge skills needed by staff and how library training could best support these. The survey received a good response rate and led to the successful writing of a training plan for the Library Network for the delivery of information skills training. H.S.     

Health Information and Health Literacy: Public Library Practices,Challenges, and Opportunities

This study investigated 18 libraries in two public library systems in Oklahoma to find out how they are addressing health literacy and facilitating access to consumer health information; how library staff members view their roles and responsibilities relative to health information and health literacy; what challenges libraries face; and what strategies are being used. Staff members recognized several challenges to providing health information and to developing programs, including staff and patron difficulties with reference interviews, and patron lack of awareness of library resources. Staff members often had only a partial understanding of health literacy, and were unaware of system strategies to address health literacy or provision of health information.     

医院护理专业人员信息素养调查分析

目的：了解医院护理专业人员的信息素养现状,为开展护士信息素养继续教育提供参考依据,从而为提升护理技能,开展护理科研奠定基础。方法：通过对医院护理人员论文发表情况、利用图书馆文献资源现状、问卷调查等多种形式进行调查。结果：与医生群体相比,护理人员在科研项目开展、发表论文数量、利用图书馆资源、信息知识等方面均处在弱势地位。结论：多数护理人员在信息意识、信息能力等方面存在一定的缺陷,医院图书馆可以通过开展馆藏资源介绍、数据库应用培训等多种形式帮助护理人员提高信息素养,以整体提高我院护理科研水平,促进护理事业的发展。     

后疫情时期医学图书馆医务人员信息素养培育研究

本文通过剖析信息素养的概念和内涵,总结了信息素养的本质和发展规律;从医疗服务模式的转变、临床诊疗和科研创新要求以及医学图书馆发展3个方面阐述了现阶段医学图书馆助力提升医务人员信息素养的重要性,指出了目前医务人员信息素养存在的问题,重点探讨了医学图书馆助力提升医务人员信息素养的途径,以期为后疫情时期制定相应的策略和措施提供理论指导和科学依据。     

Libraries and Financial Literacy: Perspectives From Emerging Markets

The article uses conceptual correlations between information literacy and financial literacy as a basis for arguing that financial literacy services have a place in library settings. The article discusses the general requirements, profile of services, and various challenges related to the introduction of financial literacy programmes in public libraries. An intensified interest in financial literacy matters may be assigned to the global financial crisis of 2007 to 2009. The interdependencies between financial crisis, financial literacy, and the potential of public libraries is illustrated by the example of one South-Eastern European country whose economic transformations and developments reflect the importance of financial literacy.     

Value and Impact of Librarians’ Interventions on Student Skills Development

The research aimed to discover the perceived impact and to identify the value of four information skills teaching interventions within the curriculum in three faculties at the University of the West of England. Faculty and library staff interviews and student focus groups were used to gather evidence about the perceived impact of the interventions, to identify possible enhancements and to investigate the drivers and barriers to embedding information skills teaching within modules. Staff and students were positive about the structure, content, and administration of the library interventions and the impact of librarians on the success of the sessions. The overwhelming majority of comments relating to the perceived impact of library interventions (84%) were positive and none was negative. One fifth of the comments noted a perceived increase in confidence in searching for information. Improved searching behavior and development of new skills were reported. Where skills were assessed students were motivated to engage, particularly when marks were awarded. The librarian/faculty staff relationship and a desire to improve student engagement with library information skills teaching were key factors in driving the embedding and assessment of library interventions.     

Serving as an Educator: A Southern Case in Embedded Librarianship

This is a case study at Mississippi State University where a business librarian taught a one-credit financial literacy course for undergraduate freshmen during the 2010 Fall term. In this case, the librarian acted as a faculty teacher and an instructional librarian to teach the students financial literacy as well as information literacy. The course curriculum was embedded with a library orientation to introduce the library services. Pre- and post-course assessments were conducted to analyze the students’ learning level in financial knowledge and the level of familiarity with various library services.     

Bringing Scale and Structure to the Online Information Literacy Program

This case study provides insights into how one academic library scaled and structured its information literacy program for a rapidly growing online learning division. Particular attention is paid to strategies for reaching learners who bypass portions of the liberal studies requirements and techniques for designing information literacy modules taught by the instructor of record. This case study demonstrates how this library’s online information literacy program reached a new population of student while creating efficiencies with staff time. Attention is also paid to aspects of the program still under development, such as additional modules and a comprehensive assessment strategy.

Ethnographic perspectives on student-centeredness in an academic library

This ethnographic study, conducted by undergraduate student-researchers under the supervision of the author, investigates an academic library that has implemented best practices for learning commons design and embedded information literacy programs. Data from field observations, participant interviews, and artifact analysis revealed conflicting perceptions of student-centeredness as it relates to learning commons design and information literacy pedagogy. The author argues that while the learning commons has been successful in attracting students to the library, there are unintended negative consequences to cross-training librarians, library staff, and partner service personnel working at key service points, which contribute to students’ lack of library awareness.

高校图书馆嵌入式信息素养教育模式研究——以重庆大学图书馆为例

[目的/意义]高校图书馆是知识发现和科技创新的重要力量,是培养高素质创新型人才的重要基地,高校图书馆开展嵌入式信息素养教育是新时代高校人才培养的基本需求,也是实施国家发展战略的基本要求。[方法/过程]基于高校图书馆嵌入式信息素养教育实践的梳理,以重庆大学图书馆的实践案例为切入点,对嵌入式信息素养的教育主体、教育平台、教育对象进行研究,力图构建可推广的、多层次、多角度、多渠道、立体化的嵌入式信息素养教育模式。[结果/结论]高校图书馆应打造信息素养教育专业队伍、学生服务队伍和校社协同的教育队伍,搭建线上线下两者协同促进和"教-学-研"三者紧密结合的嵌入教学平台,同时,针对不同的教育对象建立长效嵌入式学业生涯教育机制和进阶嵌入式信息素养教育机制,构建涵盖全员、全方位、全过程的嵌入式信息素养教育"三全"模式,不断推动我国高校图书馆开展嵌入式信息素养教育的水平、能力和质量的提升。     

高校图书馆信息素质教育新模式研究

高校图书馆是对大学生进行信息素质教育的基地之一。论文首先概述了大学生信息素质的内涵;其次从理论依据、政策依据和实践体现三个方面对高校图书馆开展大学生信息素质教育进行了阐释,并对高校图书馆信息素质教育模式的现状和存在的问题进行了分析;最后,对高校图书馆信息教育的新模式,即"信息需求层次"模式、"信息人"模式和"信息大学"模式进行了阐述。     

“Lots of Questions about ‘Fake News’”: How Public Libraries Have Addressed Media Literacy, 2016–2018

ABSTRACT

This exploratory research investigates how American public libraries have addressed the issue of media literacy in their communities from 2016 to 2018, including programs, partnerships, and other initiatives. The authors selected this period because events, such as the 2016 U.S. presidential election, contributed to an increased national concern about media literacy. This study fills a research gap by providing a broader assessment of public library responses to this issue, as most of the published literature thus far stems from academic libraries. An electronic survey solicited data from both a stratified purposive sample and a self-selecting sample of public libraries throughout the United States (U.S.). Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from sixty-five public libraries revealed several key themes related to media literacy initiatives, including types of initiatives developed, initiatives deemed most successful by staff, community response to initiatives, and reasons for not pursuing initiatives. Findings denote the current state of how public libraries address media literacy and offer practical guidance for those developing media literacy initiatives. Key findings are as follows: lack of staff time is the reason most often cited for not engaging in media literacy initiatives; more effective measurements are needed to assess both community needs and outcomes of library initiatives; “fake news” is a topic of interest in the community and among library staff; and there appears to be a relationship between staff interest in the topic and perceived interest on the part of the public, which may impact efforts to address the issue. Implications for practice resulting from those findings include engaging in initiatives that maximize service while minimizing staff time involvement; measuring and assessing community interests as well as outcomes of initiatives; using trending topics such as “fake news” to increase interest in library services; and continuing to increase staff awareness of and training in issues deemed important by the library community.     

Creating a Library Orientation Card Game to Reach New Transfer Students

Librarians and staff at a public university drew upon previous experience with instructional games to develop, implement, and assess a card game as a library orientation activity for new transfer students. This project was shaped by a desire to meet transfer students’ unique needs as well as the logistical constraints associated with the university’s transfer student orientation. The card game, modeled after Apples to Apples, presented information about the campus library system in a fun, informal way that allowed transfer students to socialize with each other while learning. Survey responses indicated that students found the game both enjoyable and helpful.

我国未成年人网络信息素养教育在现阶段已取得了一定成绩,但由于未成年人沉溺于网络的现象日趋严重及图书馆教育职能的缺失,未成年人网络信息素养教育依然任重道远。在分析我国未成年人网络信息素养教育现状的基础上．探讨了图书馆在未成年人网络信息素养教育中的角色定位,指出图书馆应是网络环境下未成年人的信息服务中心和信息素养教育中心。     

我国高校图书馆在线信息素质教育现状调查与分析

本文阐述了在线信息素质教育的特点,调查分析了2009年中国大学排行榜中前10所大学图书馆开展在线信息素质教育的现状,提出了完善我国高校图书馆在线信息素质教育的几点措施。     

When Life Hands You Lemons: Overcoming Obstacles to Expand Services in an Embedded Librarian Program

ABSTRACT

Having launched a pilot program of embedding librarians in faculty Blackboard courses, a team of university regional campus librarians reviewed their library services to faculty teaching online, off-campus, and traditional courses, and returned for Round 2. Just as the library services offered in this collaborative effort were taking off, conditions worsened. A storm of staff reductions, budget cuts, and administrative reorganization hit. Despite the climate of uncertainty and challenges, the embedded librarians persevered as they are convinced of the value of collaborating with faculty in Blackboard as active academic research consultants to further students’ information literacy skills. Project Information Literacy's findings validate this strategic solution. Consequently, the embedded librarians assessed users and implemented sustaining practices to the program to maximize its impact. Moving in the right direction is essential and doable, no matter the difficulties.     

十年来我国高校图书馆信息素养教育研究综述

文章利用文献调查的方法对1995年以来我国图书馆界有关高校图书馆信息素养教育方面的研究状况进行了较为系统的梳理,并与国外的相关研究进行比较,指出当前研究存在的不足之处,以期引起我国图书馆界的重视,并明确了今后的研究方向。
