Abstract

The flipped classroom model of teaching can be an ideal venue for turning a traditional classroom into an engaging, inquiry-based learning (IBL) environment. In this paper, we discuss how two instructors at different universities made their classrooms come to life by moving the acquisition of basic course concepts outside the classroom and using class time for active problem-based learning. Results from student surveys are presented to relate student perceptions of the flipped/IBL classroom model.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine teachers’ attitudes, values, and beliefs about inquiry. The participants of this study were 275 middle grade and secondary science teachers from four districts in North Carolina. Issues such as class size, accountability, curricular demands, and administrative support are perceived as constraints, impeding the use of inquiry. These are the issues that must be effectively dealt with in the professional education and professional development of all science teachers.  相似文献

We explored the effectiveness of a flipped active learning pedagogy in a liberal arts mathematics course without video or interactive preparation. In both control and active learning classes, students were required to respond to a reading before class and take a quiz after class. During the active learning class, students worked together in groups on problems instead of listening to a lecture. This modest change in the in-class course structure showed that students were more willing to work with peers and ask questions of the instructor. Sources examined include common grade items as well as pre- and post-course attitude surveys.  相似文献

在《国家中长期教育改革和发展规划纲要(2011-2020)》中关于高等教育优质资源普及共享的思想指导下,教育部启动了视频公开课的建设工作。视频公开课为教师专业发展提供了优质资源,翻转课堂是混合式学习的有效实现途径,二者的结合可以实现教学内容与教学方式的创新与发展。该文在对国内外基于资源的教师专业发展相关研究分析的基础上,提出了基于视频公开课的翻转课堂教师培训模式要以视频公开课作为资源,开展培训内容体系的设计、个性化培训策略的设计、培训活动的设计、培训支持服务的设计及立体的培训评价体系的设计。  相似文献

We present a short, inquiry-based learning course on concepts and methods underlying ordinary least squares (OLS), least absolute deviation (LAD), and quantile regression (QR). Students investigate squared, absolute, and weighted absolute distance functions (metrics) as location measures. Using differential calculus and properties of convex functions, students discover the sample mean, median, and pth quantile by minimizing sums of distances. Students use these metrics to define loss functions for OLS, LAD, and QR, and explore methods to minimize them. We discuss classroom experiences over two semesters. 在我国教育信息化改革的浪潮下,起源于美国教育界的翻转课堂,以建构主义理论为指导,以现代化信息技术为依托,作为一种创新型教学模式,正以其独特的优势引起我国教育界的重视和青睐。该文以教育信息化改革为导向,围绕翻转课堂的起源及定义分析,从当前大学英语教学现状入手,阐述了翻转课堂指导大学英语教学的可行性分析及其优势,并提出相关的对策及建议,给出了课堂实践案例,以期为我国高校实施大学英语翻转课堂实践提供借鉴。  相似文献

Recent changes in science education standards have mandated a prominent place for inquiry learning in science curricula. However, change from traditional teaching methods to a more inquiry-centered approach is difficult to enact. While research to date demonstrates a number of successful inquiry implementations, it also reveals a slow rate of change along with possible reasons for difficulty in adopting inquiry instructional methods. Further, inquiry reforms have failed in the past. The Networking for Leadership, Inquiry, and Systemic Thinking (NLIST) initiative, sponsored by the Council of State Science Supervisors and NASA, proposes to facilitate inquiry through systemic reform designed to avoid the mistakes of the past and incorporate new knowledge about teaching and learning. Systemic elements targeted for change include a standard conceptualization of science as inquiry, instructional materials, professional development, administrative support and leadership, facilities, community involvement, and technology infrastructure. To date, the initiative has created a detailed definition of inquiry learning and a rubric for evaluating instructional materials against this definition. This paper presents the theoretical and empirical foundations for the NLIST initiative, describes its progress, and outlines future goals.  相似文献

We describe a case study of a problem-solving section, using the “Harkness” discussion method, of an honors multivariable calculus course. Students in the problem-solving section had equivalent outcomes on exams, reported higher ratings in self-assessments of skills, and took more math classes in the following year, compared with students in the lecture-based sections.  相似文献

Abstract

Our goal with this paper is three-fold. We want to increase awareness of inquiry-based learning by presenting the strategy we use to develop and implement lessons and activities. We describe our approach to structuring lessons in mathematics in a way that engages the students by using language and constructs with which they are familiar from other non-science classes. Finally, we include samples from an exploration of celtic knots that we think works well to engage students in the inquiry process, making use of these ideas.  相似文献
