Summary-The combined derivative spectrophotometry developed bythis paper is a new method, which can be used for the simultaneous determination of mtulticomponent mixture and may be allowed to improve sensitivity and accuracy of the determination remarkably. THE UNDERLYING THEORIES OF CHARACTER EDUCATION OF SOME RADICAL WRITERS

As one means to assess their effectiveness in the formation and training of educational leaders for the United Methodist Church, professors of Christian education agreed to share their introductory course syllabi for analysis, interpretation, and public reporting. The analysis reveals points of strong overlap, very real differences, plus some surprising absences in the courses of United Methodist educators. Study findings are then interpreted in light of broader research around the purposes and means of theological education and generalized to suggest how scholars in Christian education are already and may aspire to become more deeply integral to that process.

A LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICS STRATEGIES AND UNDERLYING COUNTING SCHEMES

The purpose of this study was to determine whether patterns of strategy use in second, third and fourth grade children’s arithmetic supported Steffe’s model of numerical development. In addition to student-generated strategies, we looked at commonly taught algorithms not considered in Steffe’s model to determine whether these algorithms reflected underlying schemes. 206 children were assessed on their strategy use while solving arithmetic problems in the second grade, the third grade and again in the fourth grade. Factor analyses indicated some support for Steffe’s model, but there were exceptions. Not all children progressed in their number knowledge and strategies as a function of schooling and schooling appeared to affect the types of strategies children use independent of underlying schemes.     

THE LEGAL CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION STRUCTURES

In focussing on the legal basis for the diversification of higher education, the authors argue that the main focus when analyzing education laws for diversity or coherence should be on maintaining the proper balance between the rights of individuals and the needs of society. Thus, the fundamental role of regulation is to guarantee a flexible adaptation to changing needs. The evolution of the legal basis of Belgian, specifically Flemish, higher education, from 1970 to the present is examined from this perspective. Ways of adapting lessons learned from the Belgian experience to the realities of eastern and central Europe are proposed.

A HYPOTHETICAL MODEL OF THE STRUCTURES OF VISUAL ART ABILITIES

Following a review of the literature on the structure of visual art abilities, the author presents her own conception. Among the abilities important for visual work, three categories are singled out: elementary abilities specific to visual art activity, complex abilities making up common determinants of diverse kinds of artistic activity, and a general intellectual ability conditioning the creative nature of any kind of activity. A particular configuration of abilities belonging to these categories is decisive, in the author's view, for a specific structure of competence underlying visual art activity of any given type (reproductive, conservational, crafts, conceptual, etc). The point at issue for the suggested model is an isolation of three categories among abilities important for visual work. The author is of the opinion that definite configurations of abilities belonging to the respective categories are decisive for a specific structure of aptitudes underlying visual art activity of a particular kind or type.     

LEGAL CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION STRUCTURES: THE FRENCH CASE

Diversification, like many aspects of French higher education, has been kept under a strong degree of state control. Diversification varies according to whether it concerns Level 3 or Level 1 of higher education. Different types of institutions and programmes at both levels, resulting from conscious attempts at diversification, are described.
