As a naturalist novel, its success is based on strong visual stimulation and the continuous auditory shock, a three-dimensional war movie which is crackling with sounds and colors was rendered so incisively and vividly. This paper aims to probe the naturalism in The Red Badge of Courage from two angles:visual aspects and auditory aspects.

The Silent Way Teaching Method

This paper is an attempt to apply SW to English teaching. Meanwhile, it also evaluates the silent way in terms of its characteristics and criticism from the view of language learning theories.     

Surface reconstruction by offset surface filtering

The problem of computing a piecewise linear approximation to a surface from its sample has been a focus of research in geometry modeling and graphics due to its widespread applications in computer aided design. In this paper, we give a new algorithm, to be called offset surface filtering （OSF） algorithm, which computes a piecewise-linear approximation of a smooth surface from a finite set of cloud points. The algorithm has two main stages. First, the surface normal on every point is estimated by the least squares best fitting plane method. Second, we construct a restricted Delaunay triangulation, which is a tubular neighborhood of the surface defined by two offset surfaces. The algorithm is simple and robust. We describe an implementation of it and show example outputs.

A computational model of water migration flux of fine porous soil in frost heave was investigated in a closed system. The model was established with the heat-mass conservation law and from some previous experimental results. Through defining an auxiliary function an empirical function in the water migration flux, which is difficult to get, was replaced. The data needed are about the water content along the soft colunm after test with enough long time. We adopt the test data of sample soil colunms in [1] to verify the model. The result shows it can reflect the real situation on the whole.     

Mathematical model for electroosmotic dewatering of activated sludge

The mechanical dewatering of activated sludge is difficult due to its high compressibility, which can be improved by electroosmosis. In electroosmosis, direct electric field is applied to sludge cake. Based on the conductivity modes of different sludge beds, a model is presented in which sludge cake consists of two series parts in the circuit: a dewatered bed and an undewatered one. The dewatered bed called solid conductor is mainly made up of immovable water and sludge particles. The undewatered bed includes movable water and solid conductor, which are connected in parallel in the circuit. The model describes the variation of water content with time and electric power consumption as a function of water content in sludge cake, and interprets the reason for the variation of electroosmotic dewatering rate. Comparison with the experimental data for electroosmotic dewatering under constant voltage supports the validity of the model.

However, it is usually treated as a whole and considered as a sequel to a Chinese classical myth about sky goddess （Nvwa）, a sort of new myth extending from the heaven to the earth. The new myth is a kind of examination on earthly matters with its focus ＂love＂, and the theme can be summarized as that life is a dream and love is a fantasy.

Task-based language teaching(TBLT)is a new teaching method.?"Task"is a special term in language teaching and it's different from language exercise.It has its specific features,forms and teaching steps.There are varieties of tasks in English teaching,but the focus of every task is on solving a communicative problem,?which has some connections with a real world of learners'lives and learning experience,and which can arouse learners'interest,participation and sense of responsibility.The development of process of TBLT represents a change of focus a revolution in syllabus design.It starts from the learners'needs and emphasizes learning language by doing things.The basic principles for task-based syllabus design are authenticity,form-function integration and task dependency.The aim of this project is to introduce TBLT and it also seeks to carry out the method of TBLT in English classes.     

On the Relationship between the Original and the Translated Version——The Interpretation of Benjamin's Three Metaphors

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning,yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original,but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later,based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary,just like the fragments of a vessel,responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.     

FRP Retrofitted RC Slabs Using Finite Difference Model

Current guidelines recommend using single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) method for dynamic analysis of reinforced concretec (RC) structures against blast loads, which is not suitable for retrofitted members. Thus, a finite difference procedure developed in another study was used to accurately and efficiently analyze the dynamic response of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plated members under blast loads. It can accommodate changes in the mechanical properties of a member's cross section along its length and through its depth in each time step, making it possible to directly incorporate both strain rate effects (which will vary along the length and depth of a member) and non-uniform member loading to solve the partial differential equation of motion. The accuracy of the proposed method was validated in part using data from field blast testing. The finite difference procedure is implemented easily and enables accurate predictions of FRP-plated-member response.     

Biological early warning and emergency management support system for water pollution accident

Water pollution accidents such as chemical spill and toxicants leach have become a serious issue in the world, which brings great threats to the aquatic ecosystem and drinking water safety. To detect unknown pollutions in time and take proper emergency actions, this study developed a system which integrated an online intelligent water quality monitoring device with a high efficient water quality model. The device is based on water quality probes and biological sensors which use fish motion as indicator. The numerical model is a combination of Euler and Lagrangian approaches. Finite element method is applied to simulate the flow field in an unstructured grid, and the pollutant be- haviours are traced through particle tracking. Oracle is used to manage the basic and monitoring data, and ArcSDE as well as ArcIMS technologies are applied to make the system WebGIS-based so as to improve the data receiving and dispatching efficiency. The developed system has been successfully operated in Douhe Reservoir and Taihu Lake, China, where drinking water intakes are installed. It is seen from the applications that the online intelligent water qual- ity monitoring and emergency support system can be of great support to emergency management.

Practice on assessing grammar and vocabulary： The case of the TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language （TOEFL） brings tremendous influence to EFL （English as a Foreign Language） learners worldwide. TOEFL 2000 project claims that TOEFL, as a more reflective of communicative model, could provide more information about international students＇ language ability that it is supposed to measure. However, after detailed analyzing an authentic paper-based test paper in May, 2001 in China as a sample from four aspects--test reliability, construct validity, authenticity and interactiveness respectively, it is found that the test puts too much emphasis on vocabulary and grammar knowledge within almost every session of the test paper, in which ＂structure and written expression＂ could be the most disputed part. The content could not fully demonstrate its validity and communicative purposes so that it is suspected that test takers could meet the later demands in academic study abroad. Nevertheless, this is a powerful explanation about the current revolutionized change in the framework and content of TOEFL to meet the principles of designing a test, which could provide more information and guidance for later test designs.
