The learning difficulties for new entrant chemistry students from a multi-national, regional, tertiary education institution in the South Pacific were investigated using a purpose-designed diagnostic instrument. The instrument contained 25 items distributed across three themes: scientific reasoning, numeracy and scientific language literacy. The research findings suggest that the main learning difficulty facing these students is in numeracy with students able to interpret numerical data presented in graphical form and to complete rudimentary numerical calculations, but unable to use numerical data or perform calculations involving ratios. Targeted remedial tutoring, based on the results of this diagnostic test instrument, rather than content-driven extra tutorials, are suggested for remediation of learning difficulties. 相似文献

The Michigan State University Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program was one of several national programs to prepare primary care physicians for full‐time academic medicine careers. In their new positions as medical faculty, the physician educators would be responsible for developing projects such as curricula, research studies, or new administrative policies. This article explains how we trained novice medical educators to successfully develop curriculum projects. We noticed three vital, generalizable methods that led to success in training novices to develop projects: a clear project assignment, performance‐centered instruction, and personal mentorship. 相似文献

In recent decades, the interactive whiteboard (IWB) has become a relatively common educational tool in Western schools. The IWB is essentially a large touch screen, that enables the user to interact with digital content in ways that are not possible with an ordinary computer-projector-canvas setup. However, the unique possibilities of IWBs are rarely leveraged to enhance teaching and learning beyond the primary school level. This is particularly noticeable in high school physics. We describe how a high school physics teacher learned to use an IWB in a new way, how she planned and implemented a lesson on the topic of orbital motion of planets, and what tensions arose in the process. We used an ethnographic approach to account for the teacher’s and involved students’ perspectives throughout the process of teacher preparation, lesson planning, and the implementation of the lesson. To interpret the data, we used the conceptual framework of activity theory. We found that an entrenched culture of traditional white/blackboard use in physics instruction interferes with more technologically innovative and more student-centered instructional approaches that leverage the IWB’s unique instructional potential. Furthermore, we found that the teacher’s confidence in the mastery of the IWB plays a crucial role in the teacher’s willingness to transfer agency within the lesson to the students. 相似文献

AbstractThis investigation represents one approach to dealing with accountability. Fifth and sixth grade students at a university campus school served as subjects. They were given the Metropolitan Achievement Test in the fall of 1974 and again in the spring of 1975. Significant differences in learning between the fall and spring testing were measured with the purpose of pinpointing weaknesses and strengths for individual students within each of the basic skills. Significant differences were found for all subsections of the test. The student was compared with self (pre- and posttest raw scores), and also his/her position was identified in relation to the class. This information can be useful to the teacher in individualizing instruction and in the reporting process. 相似文献
