The Effects of Language Policy on Minority Languages

Many countries have language policies with the purpose of promoting or discouraging the use of a particular language or a set of languages. In a multilingual country, the official language(s) is always favored by the national language policy; in contrast, the minority languages, to some extent, are hindered in their development. This paper, by the case studies of minority languages in New Zealand, Netherlands, and China, illustrates the effects of these countries’ general language policies on their minority languages. Minority languages are seen as a part of cultural identity of minority groups. To protect their own culture and identity, they devote themselves to seek the equal right for their languages and cultures. In making language policies, the authorities should give respect and regard to the minority languages.     

Identity and ESL Pedagogical Implications of Hip-Hop/ Rap Music

Since its naissance back into the 70s of the last century,Hip-Hop and Rap music has been utilized as a channel for identity expression and formation by African Americans especially urban youth.From a sociolinguistic point of view,it is through the use of a particular language register–generally termed as African American English(AAE)–that the rappers get to portrait,narrate and elaborate their own ideologies closely concerning various aspects of their life and status.Broadly,the influence of Hip-Hop culture has gained it major momentum among urban youth across the globe.In countries where English is used as a foreign language(EFL),Hip-Hop is well received by young speakers who wish to express their own personality and alleviate pressures from schools,family and society(Li,2004).Given the multiplicity of features in Hip-Hop texts,this article argues that it can be informative to EFL in general and English pronunciation teaching in particular.

The Translation Strategies of English Numerical Idioms Based on Skopos Theory

Number, as an indispensible part of language, shows the cultural differences among different languages with its unique charm. And idioms play a crucial role in the studying of language with its characteristics of briefness and vividness. So the numerical idioms as a combination of numbers and idioms play an important part of language. The numerical idioms in both English and Chinese have their own strong ethnic color because of their cultural differences. Only by the way of understanding the cultural meanings of the numerical idioms deeply, can the translation of numerical idioms be more vivid and more expressive. The following essay is going to give a brief discussion of the translation strategies of English-Chinese numerical idioms based on the skopos principle of skopos theory. It will make the communication between America and China better and more effective.     

Group Dynamics and Willingness to Communicate in EFL Classrooms

This study explores how group dynamics(such as group cohesiveness and group norms)influence learners’willingness to communicate(WTC)in an EFL classroom.The results from the 236 questionnaires showed that there was a significant correlation between group dynamics and WTC in an EFL classroom.A dozen students who participated in this study were interviewed for more in-depth information and the data revealed that most interviewees acknowledged the importance of the class group.The qualitative data also showed the importance of their own determination to learn in establishing their WTC.     

Comparisons between Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s Hamlet from the Perspective of Translator’s Subjectivity

For the Chinese versions of Hamlet, Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s translations can be called the classic. Because the two great translators have their own choices, their versions differ a lot. In the translating process, translator’s subjectivity plays an important role and it is one of the major reasons for emerging different translation. The thesis mainly talks about Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s different versions from the perspective of translator’s subjectivity by comparison.     

Breaking Through Ethnocentrism Downside in International Communication

Ethnocentrism exists in all cultures and everyone is ethnocentric to some extent.People always tend to hold a stand on the side of their own cultural beliefs,values and manners to judge what is correct and what is wrong with regard to the cultures and traditions of other countries.Some feasible ways are given to adjust ethnocentric tendency in people’s minds in the future intercultural communication.Besides that,this paper also describes the author’s attributions to this study and gives some prospects for the future study to the ethnocentric phenomenon.     

Integrating social responsibility into an entrepreneurship education program： A case study

Entrepreneurship education in the South Africa is often presented as a neutral discipline. Yet fundamental to any entrepreneurship education program should be the integration of key issues, such as ethics, values and social responsibility. This paper reports on a study that set out to explore student teachers experiences of engaging in an entrepreneurship education program specially enhanced to create an awareness of the link between entrepreneurship and social responsibility. It argues that exposure to a program of this nature is a powerful means to dispel the myth that entrepreneurship is a neutral discipline and that such exposure creates useful avenues for student teachers to examine their own constructions and perceptions of entrepreneurship and social responsibility. This paper draws on data constructed in a qualitative research project that engaged the tenets of symbolic interactionism in order to understand how students experienced the program and to understand their changing perceptions.
